Collecting Drinkable Water from air using a Dehumidifier

This video documents my results from using a typical Dehumidifier to collect drinkable water from the air. Granted, the power requirements may limit its functionality in situations where the power grid is down, or the cost of power is too high. However, in a crisis situation and the availability of alternative power sources is present, this technique may prove to be valuable.
TCL 40 Pint Portable Dehumidifier w/ Auto Defrost was configured to run continually and maximum wattage usage.

Thanks for documenting this. I'm still deciding, but have no problem with using the water for household or filtering if drinking during a crisis. I hear what the critics are saying. The thing is, do we trust our water filters or not? Yes or no. I suspect much worse is going through our water filters than what we would collect in dehumidifiers. There's our answer.

Think about this, what pollution is in the air, we breathe. So if we are pulling water from the air, it can't be any worse.

Maybe create your own filters with aggregate, sand and charcoal and then boil it🤔

@ReverendRichie Excellent thought, but we must also consider the the process in which it undergoes, Making this transition from gas to liquid. Water purity is more.Vhonorable in a liquid state versus gas. The converted stagnant water from condensation.Can harbor biological contaminants including mold mildew and allergy especially if the collection bucket isn't properly Cleansed regularly. The condensation can also pick up lead and other metal residues from the component parts of the dehumidifiers. Unlike the Stillwater, it is important for us to remember that dehumidified.Water is never sterilized through a boiling process.

No one has said what metal concentrations are present in dehumidifier water. You can get serious poisoning. Someone needs to do this. When I get one. I'm going to take the water sample to a lab to find out. A lab where you would take water well samples to be tested for potable water

I’ve used it for my fish tank but they didn’t liked it, however it doesn’t leave any trace or stains in my canning steamer like tap water does. So there’s use for it
@marigold973

Serious question: how did you determine quality or that the fish did not like it? I take cues from behavior of other living things so wonder what they found undesirable. For now, I'm trusting filters with added minerals. Still testing.

i had thought about using the water from out of a dehumidifier before now but i think i would be extra safe by filtering its water though a zero water jug as they give a reading of 000 on tds meter once the water has passed through the filter. there's lots of dust in the air inside your room floating around and you only ever notice that dust in the air when a strong sunbeam shines in through your window and you can see so much dust floating inside your room. no matter how clean your room is there is a ton of dust just floating and some of it would be sucked into the dehumidifier water. its why i would use a zero water filter jug then after that i would feel it safe to drink that water.
@ReverendRichie
@ReverendRichie Жыл бұрын
That is a good point about the free-floating dust particles in the air; however, I would prefer the dust over rust from old plumbing, as in the situation in Michigan. As stated, if there is another means of collecting water, this would be a backup system used in a crisis situation.

Be careful. Although you have low PPM, we don't know what those remaining PPM are. But we do know the condensing coil isn't food grade and the water likely condenses on some lead (Pb) solder points, and there's no telling what other chemicals could come from those coils.

I am curious: what are your perspectives on Water stored in plastic containers?
@CT-if2tt
@CT-if2tt 10 ай бұрын
@@ReverendRichie It depends on the type of plastic. The recycle code can be found on most containers on the bottom, surrounded by a triangle. #5 is the best (Polypropylene) and will leach the least amount of contaminants. #2 is the next best (HDPE) and is what most gallon jugs for milk and water are made from. #7 is a toss up since some is good and some is bad. The harder the #7, the better. Avoid all others, even #1 which is what most water bottles are made from. In all cases, esp. #1, keep them out of sunlight and away from heat: the cooler the better (40F would be perfect). Still, if water is stored in plastic for a long time, you can run the water through a carbon filter and that will remove almost all of the leached chemicals. So, store carbon in vacuum-sealed bags along with the water.

@@CT-if2tt So would it be as safe to use a carbon filtration system in general on all water, including water collected from this dehumidifier? Please note we are talking about survival mode, etc.?
@CT-if2tt
@CT-if2tt 10 ай бұрын
@@ReverendRichie If it was me in a survival mode (not advice, just personal thoughts) I'd boil it to kill any microbes, and then I'd use a carbon filter. The carbon won't catch all of any dangerous metals but will help some. But if it's that or die of dehydration, I'd drink it. Otherwise, I'd use it to wash clothes, flush the toilet, etc.

@@ReverendRichie Thank you for showing your procedure and sharing your results. Now, about the air conditioner: both the air conditioner and dehumidifier are drawing water from the air and condensing it. You showed us the dehumidifier water is clean. What leads to your conclusion that air conditioner water if collected won't be clean?
@ReverendRichie
@ReverendRichie 10 ай бұрын
@@williammiller6043 Thank you for your comment. To answer your question, I don't recall stating water from an AC would not be clean; however, that greatly depends upon the conditions where the AC is located. I know of AC units where rodents made nests in the evaporator and a high mode concentration in the outlet. It depends upon how well the AC is maintained.

Y’all don’t drink it straight out the dehumidifier . Mold and the system itself isn’t food grade and who know what chemical or cheap material they use. Obviously do your own research. But if you do choose to go this route. You might want at a minimum to use a distiller. Yeah you’re using more energy, ect. But it’s your health. Boiling does not make it 100 safe from mold and other contaminants . This is just the little research I’ve done in 10 min lol. But obviously for an emergency this will better than dying. But keep everything clean and do research. Please and good luck
