There was a point in the late '90s where I intended to get a complete NES set. Most games were under $5 back then, and I figured it would be fun to try everything. I ended up stopping at around 600 games for it, as I found that a lot of what I was buying wasn't all that enjoyable. I don't see myself going to spend a great afternoon with Orb 3D, Dudes with Attitude, Videomation... so, I stopped trying to get everything and started buying just games that I'd like to play. I kept it all and still buy games, but I'd never go for a complete set again. I much more an advocate of playing over collecting, and keeping things fun. If it isn't fun, a hobby isn't worth doing.

Thanks for the shout out man! As for set collecting for me personally, I orginally never intended on getting a full gamecube set, but by the time I had over 400 games i figured I might as well keep going till I have them all lol. Some advice I would give is definitely stay focused on your favorites and dont pay too much for filler. Sets aren't for everyone. Every system has good, bad and sports games. It all comes down to you personally and what you what your collecting goals are. I love the gamecube and have the set but on the flip side I only have 2 neo geo cd games... so again it's all about what you like. Great video Retro Bird as always. And congratulations on the 2k subs!

As a kid, I dreamed of having a complete NES set even though I knew it was impossible. I think it was mostly the fact that I didn't own many games and always wanted to play new ones. However, now I actually think less is more. I'd rather have a smaller collection of games that I _really_ love and want to play. I wouldn't want every game. There are just some games out there that would end up collecting dust anyways as I either would not have time to play them or they just aren't games I would enjoy playing.

I never understood full set collecting until I started following console collector. If you truly love a system like he does I say go for it. I respect the hell out of him for not only playing every game in his set but also reviewing them all. That is a godliness feat. I can’t even play all my games I actually like how can someone play 100+ generic sports games lol. Thanks for this video retro bird great topic bud

It did get me hooked. Part of the fun is the hunt and to find good deals. I am never in a hurry. I did play most of the games in my collection, but I skip some games, like American Football titles or such. I managed to complete Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Jaguar cd, 3DO, 32X, Master System (except Smurfs Travel the World), Saturn and Dreamcast. All PAL.

Since I buy almost exclusively in lots, getting a full set would make it a lot harder to be able to keep on affording buying them and selling off the stuff I'll never play, and i'm short on shelving space as-is, so I don't see myself ever finishing any console sets unless I get lucky on the big rares for one of the microscopically small US console libraries, like 32X or Virtual Boy.

Lots is the only way to go. I buy nes in lots, take what I want, and sell what I don’t want. I lose some money on shipping and eBay fees, but most games are under $10, even after that.

I own a complete North American Original Xbox collection and I'm 2 games away from a full North American Nintendo 64 set. My all-time favorite console is the Original Xbox and it was one console that I really wanted to own all of the North American releases. I started my goal over 8 years ago and I was able to complete the set over the span of 5 years. I was able to collect the set for cheap as at the time, original Xbox games were not very popular to collect and the prices were low. Most people didn't care much for the Original Xbox and it was really only seen as the console that you play Halo on. Some of my most expensive games like Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast, Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, Teen Titans, IHRA Drag Racing Sportsman Edition etc, I was able to buy for cheap. I bought Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast from a local game store for only $5.00. Today people are charging around $200 to $250 for a copy. The big factor with collecting full sets is to collect for that console when it's at it's lowest point in popularity. I would not attempt to collect a full North American Original Xbox set in today's market. So many titles that I got for S0.50 or $1.00 are now going for $5 to $30 each. One of my best scores was 150 Original Xbox games for $100 at one of my local game stores. The store was so happy to see Original Xbox games selling as they had been sitting for years without anyone really buying them. My buddy who was manager at that location at the time said "hey if you buy a bunch of these, I will give you a deal" so I picked out 150 games and he said "take it all for $100.00". You're just not going to get those kind of deals these days. Collecting has become main stream and the Pandemic has only increased the demand for games and made collecting the hot thing to do. When I started to share about my goal of going after a complete North American Original Xbox set on Facebook and KZfaq, I only knew of maybe handful of others who were going after the same goal. Today I know over 100 people who are going after a complete North American Original Xbox set on Facebook. Prices are at an all-time high for Original Xbox and it's become very popular. I would never recommend collecting a full set for any console. I always recommend that people pick a handful of consoles to collect for an play. Pick maybe 20 to 30 games for each console that you really want to play and collect those games. That way you will only own games that mean something to you and you will save a lot of money, time, energy and space for your collection. A great discussion video my friend. You earned a sub from me. If you're interested in seeing my full North American Original Xbox collection video, it's on my channel. Take care and have a wonderful day.

I wanted to get full Xbox myself, and for the most part, got many games at a decent price, but the big morale crusher ended up being Steel Battalion - I kept getting beat out on all the decent auctions (despite the generous bids I was making), and even had an acquaintance who had it, but could never make a deal with him - of course, the CIB price went astronomical after that, shattering any hopes - I can’t see myself completing it realistically. Funny enough, I have two storiessimilar to yours - bought Conker CIB and mint for $5 from an individual, and around the same time, bought 2 sealed Xbox Forza 2 pack-in consoles for $50 each, back around 2012-3. Ended up selling one of them for $300 about 5 years ago, kept the other as a backup to my original.

I collect games for my friends in a pool so as long as they have their own consoles they can stop at my "library" and just pick whatever they want, my friends take care of me in a lot of other ways, so I offer them all the entertainment I know so that they can have fun, Sometimes we both play the same game at the same time like them playing breathe of the wild on the switch while I play it on the Wii U connected to a CRT, so we get to compare them and not have to trade controllers, and between Sega, Sony, and Nintendo From NES to Genesis to PS5 their are 17 consoles, 5 Sega, 5 playstation, and 7 Nintendo home consoles, if you just owned 20 games for each consoles, You'd have 340 games, which is no small collection to try and stack up in your living room and still look convenient. Ive been collecting 8 years, and honestly, it almost feels like a rush to finish because you want to be done, when you realize how much money it has actually taken to make the dream a reality, all you start to think is Once I finish this collection...Im gonna have so much money, but that day always seems one or two years more away like a moving goalpost.

As cool as it is to see a complete collection for a single console, I couldn't bring myself to try this with the majority of consoles I own. There's just way too much filler and high priced games to consider. Space is also an issue regardless of the games media type or console. The only console I'm debating on doing a complete collection for is the Neo Geo CD. The overall library for the NGCD has less than 100 games and I already own 1/3 of that number. The problem I face is that many of the remaining titles I'd need cost hundreds of dollars, in the case of a couple specific games maybe even close to a thousand. An insane price tag for any game to be sure, but for serious Neo Geo collectors especially for the AES it may be seen as chump change lol. I do have a number of heavy hitters in my collection though, so maybe I can do it if I'm patient enough and find some good deals here and there. Otherwise, for the rest of my console collection, I just get what I feel is going to be good regardless of whether its pricey or dirt cheap. Everything else I get along the way either gets traded and/or sold to go towards others that I do actually want.
@dariusq8894

IMO getting complete sets for a system is insane based on cost alone. The average person has much more important things to spend their money on and collectors generally already spend more than they probably should. That said, I have thought about getting complete sets for systems with really small libraries but in the end couldn't justify spending money on the crap games which I would probably never even look at. That's money I could be using towards games which I would actually play.

I've loved the idea of a complete set as a novelty of having everything for something, I've been debating a complete set of intellivision games with their boxes, there's not too many and almost all of them are dirt cheap until you get to the 20 or so rarer ones, and even then I don't think any go for above 3 digits Edit: this one volleyball game goes for $1,000 with it's box and there are like 5 or 6 in the 3 digits, then it quickly drops to 20 bucks each and 5 bucks each

Yeah I just can't imagine getting a complete set for any system. Like at first I think in a sort of, "Maybe if somehow I just had everything out of no where it'd be neat." But the more I thought about it, the more I would honestly say no. There's certainly systems I have a good amount of games wanted lists for, but even for the absolute ideal situation of a small library for a system I'm super passionate for, say the Neo Geo Pocket Color or the 32X, I just wouldn't want to go for it. I can definitely acknowledge how neat it is to have the historical aspect of seeing everything on a system, but by god if I wind up with a copy of Neo Cherry Master, I'm not gonna play it, I'm never gonna play it. I might pop it in once and go like, "Yep, that sure is a slot machine game." But after that, it's neat to look at, but it's just clutter I have very little interest in asides from how little interest I have in it. For the 32X, even with its library of 40 games I'm only planning on maybe having, 4, 5, or maybe 7 games at the most depending on if I find a good deal on a copy of Kolibri and get the 32X versions of Space Harrier and After Burner rather than the Saturn or even 3DS versions of those games. Like if I got into the whole library that'd mean getting a lot of Genesis ports and some pretty awful stuff like Spiderman Web of Fire. Heck, even for a game I really enjoy like NBA Jam, I want to stick with the Genesis version since I just like a lot of the music there way more than in the 32X version. But that certainly doesn't mean I'm not super passionate about the games I do want for the thing. Honestly stuff like this that involves cutting out huge portions of a console's already small library goes to show having a small amount of games doesn't determine how much you love a system. I can go on about the games I currently own on either system for hours. When I finally get a copy of Virtua Racing on the 32X I'll be singing to the high heavens just how fun of an arcade racer it is! Going on about how much I think that version is my favorite version of the game despite there being objectively smoother ways to play the game out there. There's just so much less money spent in a way that I feel better represents what I love about the systems. The same type of thinking certainly applies to other consoles with way bigger libraries, I just think these are the best ones to use as examples since they're easily the most extreme cases in my collection. I still certainly admire the dedication and passion required to go for a complete on any system. I certainly wouldn't be able to achieve that any time soon. At the end of the day, I wish anyone who does want to pursue a complete set of games for any system the absolute best of luck!

Not a lot of games in those libraries, but they were also consoles I didn't have in my childhood, and I like the idea of exploring them. I also really like the box art and think they look great on a shelf to display. The thing I love about Pokémon is there it is not only games but countless merch to! So even if I happen meet someone with all the games as well their display will look drastically different to mine as they will likely have different merch accompanying their collection, which I feel personalises it!

Hi Retro Bird. I've stated this before, but I currently have 32 complete console libraries and several more only need one or a few games to be completed. I finished a complete North American Dreamcast collection nearly five years ago. I'm missing 1 from the "All stars" variant subset, but I'm not in need of it. I managed to get most the games though for super cheap 10+ years ago. I'm also 1 away from a full North American PS Vita set. If I were to have started even thinking about full setting Dreamcast even 2 years ago though, no way I would ever attempt it with how hard the games are to find now and the cost of them! Makes me cringe seeing Sonic Adventure at $40 today when they were $10 several years ago! I don't plan on ever getting a full set of anything going forward!

I have a pretty strong distaste for collecting of any kind. It's why earlier in life I went through a phase where I literally sold off everything video game related, all the games, consoles, controllers, even my memory cards containing a few thousand hours of progress, everything. Even as I start to buy back stuff, I only want to own stuff that represents my taste in some way. I hate collecting so much, that even for something that would be really cool, like filling your garage walls with license plates from every state, even if it was easy/cheap, I would rather not. Virtual props to those who do complete entire sets, but that's just a totally different world to me.

For the people that say yes, I don’t blame you, we all have moments that we know no matter if we are BILLIONAIRES we will never get back. Moments that are unique, and can never be replicated. That’s what we’re looking for, and the collectors that have the budget to recollect those memories, hats off, it’s hard to draw a line to where the sacrifice isn’t worth the unique memory resurgence

I agree there is no wrong answer. Me personally I have no interest in buying bad games just to say I have a complete set for a console. If I were to do it though I’d go for the Sega 32x. I’d be forced to spend a lot of money for the terrible Spider Man Web of Fire, but it is only about 40 games and I already have like 6. I’m more interested in just getting the games for a console that I’m interested in and picking up some here and there that are dirt cheap to just try it out. Currently my biggest physical collection for a single console is probably the original Xbox at somewhere around 60 games.

My "complete set" was every single Legend of Zelda game released on the 3DS. At first I wanted a physical copy of every single Zelda game. But I didn't want to get all the consoles to do so. Then I discovered Virtual Console on the 3DS eshop and thought "digital it is." I thought it would be a fun pastime and I've always wanted to play the Zelda games. I thought I would get the 2 DS games, Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, for cheap. I remembered heading to GameStop and browsing the lose DS game cartridges. I WAS NOT expecting like 10 year old DS games to be $40. Other problems included: 1. Needing a 'new' 3DS/2DS for SNES VC so that was another trip to the store. 2. The Ambassador Exclusive, Minish Cap 3. The limited time release, Four Swords Anniversary Edition. My complete set for just digital Zelda games and those 2 physical DS games cost me up to roughly $500. Though I'm super satisfied an proud of my collection, I can't imagine spending $1000+ for games I don't like or even play.

I'd love to go for a complete set but I hardly have the cash to get just the games I want. So if I was gonna try for one I'd pick one of the consoles with a few games. The only console that *really* caught my eye that I'd like to get a complete set for is the casio loopy. It's cute, only has 10 games, but one or two of them are kinda hard to get so it'd still be a fun hunt. *And* I'm a fan of every game on the console. Virtual boy or N64 would be runners up. VB because it's cool and small library (I like most of those games too). N64 because I've already got 10% of the library lmao. I think it's a little silly to try and do a complete set for the consoles with larger libraries and a *huge* variety of games, since you likely won't like everything (or most things) and it can get very time consuming and expensive. But a smaller niche console? Sure, it'd be affordableish, and there's a better chance that you'd like everything on it, since you can easily check out the games before committing to the full set.

Thanks for this. Your videos really help putting this hobby into perspective. I think that since discovering your channel I feel better about the idea of selling off parts of my collection, since up to this point I had been a "never sell" guy. But recently I took some games to trade in at the store, and then a few weeks later I wanted to see what they were selling my extra copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance Gold Edition for and it was already sold, so that actually made me feel good. I should probably get rid of most of that Xbox 360 stuff. Retro is better. Definitely still want complete Game Gear collection being more than half way there already, but I guess I don't need a complete N64 collection. Anyway, I got a complete Wii U collection, which I completed not long after the Switch came out (if you don’t count the few releases that have come out in the past few years - but I was able to get those too!). I scoured every GameStop in my area, scoped out the sales on games wherever possible, and luckily picked up a few while they were still available. Sure, I may have paid a little higher than “Clearance” prices on everything, but at least I didn’t pay high than retail for ANY of them. I briefly considered getting a full Dreamcast set (which is probably the next lowest library count), but alas, a few of the games have become precious grails. Unless the game library is very small I wouldn't try to collect every game in a library but being a huge TMNT fan I have made a point of collecting every TMNT game I can and over the years have acquired or reacquired a version of every TMNT game that had a physical release on console and Nintendo portable. I think I have at least the vast majority of Nintendo published Switch games as well and might attempt to collect all of them because that seems feasible to me but most successful consoles have way too many games and way too many games I don't even care to play so I'd rather be selective about what games I collect for those consoles.
