Thanks for your videos… I’ve went through all your videos and am currently growing my first bed as a test run on our new property my wife and I just remodeled… I’m mainly a vegetable gardener but the idea of growing poppy’s for some reason seemed very interesting to me… maybe it’s the because of the folklore, maybe just the beauty of the plant… I wish I would have found your videos sooner because I watched a video claiming that poppy’s could be transplanted… that was a waste of time and around 1500 germinated plants… I kept a small handful after planting the majority indoors and after that went south I found your videos… I tossed the remaining seeds in a flower bed my nana used to grow tulips in 30 years ago at the end of March and to my surprise most of them germinated and a currently thriving… can you give me a few suggestions on other direct seed accompaniment species. Thanks again from up here in Pennsylvania!

What a huge amount of seeds! I’m hoping to do this for the first fine too. Are you refrigerating them as a cold stratification in order to plant them before it gets cold enough in Raleigh? (Black Friday) Would they germinate later like Dec/Jan if left to self sow?
@BrieThePlantLady3 жыл бұрын
They need to be refrigerated stored. Otherwise they loose viability. It’s not real stratification. That occurs when you sow the seed in cold soil in fall. The self sowers tend to germinate early/ not later.

Hi Brie, awesome video! Do you ever eat your poppy seeds? I love poppy seed bread and bagels and I think it would be fun to eat some of the seeds harvested. I was wondering if the seeds need to be washed before eating them.
@BrieThePlantLady9 ай бұрын
I have a few times, but now that I’m allergic to butter and eggs (alpha gal) I’m less motivated. I didn’t wash them, though I’m sure you could. Probably need cheesecloth so they won’t drain through a colander.

Hi Brie, can I cut the poppy heads while they are still green, after flowering but before they are brown, and then just wait until they dry out before harvesting the seeds or should I leave the pods on the plant until they have dried out? Elmarie South Africa.
@BrieThePlantLady2 жыл бұрын
The seeds won’t be ripe if you cut them green, therefore you won’t have great germination. I recommend waiting until the seeds come out if the pods with a light tap.

I think you can grow them in Pensacola. I’d recommend late November direct seeding. They will likely Grow much faster for you and bloom earlier than here in Nc.

These have to be direct sown as the do not transplant. In zone you can sow in March but I still recommend fall sowing.

Hello Brie. Do you refrigerate all of the seeds you've harvested/bought, e.g. Zinnias, Nigella, etc.? I bought a lot of seeds this year which I plan to sow in late Nov./early Dec. and for sowing in early spring next year. I've never refrigerated seeds before and I've been thinking to do that. Would the light that's in the refrigerator affect the seeds in a negative way? Are there any seeds which one shouldn't refrigerate? I'm sorry to take your time with these things; I understand if you're very busy and can't reply. Have a good day.

Hi Brie. I am just starting out and have been given a packet of seed by the supermarket but unfortunately it appears that they will all be of the same colour; these are a gold colour on the front of the packet although I asked the person for "mixed colours" but in Durban, South Africa no such thing can be found - so I have the gold and will give them a "try" - been watching your videos on how to go about things the only problem being that in our humid climate (although right now in August a winter month; spring being lst Sept.) I'm not sure just when to sow these seeds. Have you any idea? Many plant nurseries have closed down in Durban (such a pity!) and the few left aren't savvy as to the planting of California poppies so I'm virtually going it alone. I realize as well that if this seed is old it will not produce the right size or quality poppy plant. Linda Young in Durban South Africa
@BrieThePlantLady Жыл бұрын
Hi Linda! It sounds like you have the straight species Escholtzia californica. I’m not exactly sure in your timing… I always say experiment so you can learn to see what works best.

If you left the seed pods alone, would they self-sow, or would the birds/other animals take them? This makes me want to fast-forward to Black Friday and give poppies a try! (Zone 8a)
@BrieThePlantLady3 жыл бұрын
Both- the birds will decor the pods Abd seeds will self sow. Even by collecting seed is fall to the ground. The success rate if self sown depends on your mulching habits remember even self sown poppy seed needs cool soil and light to germinate.
