I would suggest that you read what you own before buying more stuff. Also don't compare your collection to someone else's one and think you need to buy more volumes. Great tips boogie.

I’m actually a little different when it comes to this. I’ve been collecting for about 4 years now and I usually keep about 10% of my collection unread just for those slow months when I don’t/can’t or am waiting for sales to add to the collection

I’ve been collecting over the course of 10 years (5 years of active collecting) and my biggest advice for beginners would be to only invest in the series you are genuinely interested in/intrigued by. When I was first returning to the hobby I would go to my local used book stores and buy random volumes of random series just because they were a couple dollars as opposed to saving my money for newer volumes and series at retail price. Eventually I ended up with series in my collection that I had little to no interest in reading. Even if you stick to your monthly budget and end up with a lighter haul because you bought the volumes new as opposed to used, its so much more rewarding to have in your possession series that you actually are excited to own and read. Aiming towards quality over quantity when building a collection will definitely pay off, I promise you.

This comment is so helpful. I hope people read this one. Very good advice - and it's something I have been doing for awhile. Yes as a KZfaqr I do silly stunts and buy what the chat wants sometimes - but other than that my physical collection is curated by me, for me, and all series I very much enjoy currently on the shelves.

that’s personal…some people like having different manga in their collection that maybe they don’t love..maybe a friend or child will enjoy it. Hobbies should NEVER cause regret, that’s an addiction. Find a solution for unused manga

I live in the US and I can say that manga is more spread out everywhere like barns and noble. But when I buy only and I wasn’t good deals there’s always no free shipping so it’s literally the same cost as if I had bought it at the regular cost.

I also want add is that, when you start a manga collection. I recommend that you start with a small series that’s about 4-12 volumes. If you start with a small series you can read finish reading the manga sooner. Plus it helps if you have a small budget. Manga can get really expensive that’s goes around 10 to 20 dollars in retail price. Because if you start a series that’s around 45 volumes, it will take you lots of time and money to complete/finish the series. You can agree or disagree on that. But otherwise read what you like and spend on the series that you want to collect. Overall Boogie you did a great job on this video, keep up the good work and of course happy creating ;).

Now this is an interesting point. I can definitely see the logic and somewhat agree! Of course save money & time! Great addition. Also if the series is long and budgeting is something you really need to be strict on - there is always the library!
@callawolf531

I actually agree with this point. When I first started reading manga, the first three series I got into were between 4 and 7 volumes, but I didn't realize that these were relatively short series. I thought it was the standard because I wasn't really searching for shorter manga, I was just looking for good manga and the first few series I came across were shorter (first volume of the first manga I got was Akira Volume 1, which has 6 large volumes to it, not sure if you'd consider it short or not, but it's not as long as even Rurouni Kenshin for example).

Don't buy more than 2 volumes of a series you haven't yet read. Buying one or two volumes and not liking them. Oh well it's a small amount. Buying 10-20 but having no clue if you even like it is just a disaster. Try not to buy into hype and use your personal judgement on if you'd like a series. See this all the time. People going for popular series and not knowing what the fuss is about. A collection you've bought using your own tastes means way more to one where you don't care about what you own. Start slow, then pick up if you want more. People seem to go in huge and buy 100-200 volumes and then realise manga collecting isn't for them and then try and sell everything off.

I've made this mistake REALLY hard when I first started out, I read the first Deluxe of Berserk, loved it, bought al of those as well as Hellsing and Blade of the Immortal Deluxe. I read those, and then I went completely mad. I spent around 1700 usd on tons of whole series in the span of a week, not reading the first volume, some of them not even knowing the synopsis of it, just going from recommendations and gut feeling "I think I'd like this". (All of Monster, 20CB, PunPun, JoJo's part 1-4, Saint Oniisan +pre-ordered what hadn't come out) Luckily I ended up loving all of them, but it was still an incredibly unnecessary gamble. Plus I could've gotten them cheaper on sale or used, but I was impatient.

I agree with all of these! I'm a beginner to collecting but I've watched so many manga video's, hauls, collections, that I know way more than I need to! One thing, i'd say is don't be afraid to drop and sell series. If you buy a series and don't end up enjoying it theres no point in finishing it, and if you really feel like you have to, buy it second hand in bulk, go to the library, or read it online, there's so many options! and if you're starting out with manga and (i assume you watch anime as well, haha) and you don't have any idea where to start, try picking up a series you've already watched and love. I picked up MHA just to get ahead of the show and avoid all the spoilers and ended up loving the story even more after reading the manga! These comments have great tips too so I'd say listen to those as well. OH! And to anyone reading this comment, read jujutsu kaisen and watch the first two episodes on crunchy-roll

Started really diving into manga at the start of the year, don't have much but I would say for those who are anime watchers and want to get into manga, read what you watch. Because there are so many stories and it can be overwhelming at first to choose one. For example, I watched Demon Slayer first and then started the manga, and it's been an absolute joy. So far my collection only has manga of animes that I've watched, but definitely will grow into being more diverse 😊

Diversifying series is really a good advice, especially if you feel like themes are too recurrent in the genre you’re in right now. If you ever feel like one genre is getting too repetitive, ask around to find a genre that might also be for you

This is how I found out my love for psychological and horror manga. I got burnt out on the few volumes of naruto and shoujo manga that my family bought me rarely. I used to read online a lot but when series I loved online get a release in the U.S. I buy them as soon as possible.

I love this video! I’ve been reading manga for so long and you make so many good points. I always try to read series either online or at my library before investing. For example, I read almost all of one piece at my library when I was younger and now am collecting all the volumes. Also, when it comes to buying from local shops, I work at a used book store and I know that once we form a relationship with a customer, we try our absolute best to put on hold or get the book your looking for ASAP. And the community is absolutely the most magical part of reading manga (or literature in general), both online and in your city.

My local 2nd and Charles had a guy trade in his entire 72 volume Naruto collection. They were in amazing condition and first prints. The store priced them around 3-4 $ per volume and had a buy 2 get 1 sale. I spent maybe around $150 for the whole series that day. I'll probably never get a deal like that ever again.

Hi! Good video and thank you (and the comments) for the advices! I have started collecting Kimetsu no Yaiba manga since I realized it was being published in my country because it was a manga that I really enjoyed and loved. Also to support the author! Now I want to collect other mangas that I enjoyed and are also published in my country (Tokyo Ghoul, Gokushufudo, Spy X Family, Jujutsu Kaisen) but since I have a limited budget, I decided to buy just the first volume (JJK, Gokushufudo) or buy the volumes that have my favourite arcs or chapters (Tokyo Ghoul:Re 14&16) And definitely it's a expensive hobby... But I am enjoying it a lot even though I don't really have much money! 😆😆

As a 35 year manga collector since the days of Area 88 floppies, I agree with the entire awesome content in both the video itself supplemented by these comments Here is an important tip from all these years collecting manga: ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND: BOTH DARK HORSE (DH) AND VERTICAL manga will undoubtedly/inevitably go out of print (OOP) quick, fast and in a hurry - so, if you are digging any DH or Vertical series, always err on the side of purchasing that series immediately rather than waiting Of those two though, DH is the King “Worstest”

if you are starting, take advantage of libraries. A lot of people don't realize that some libraries have manga. If you are planning to get a manga series, you can read it in the library and see if you like it before putting manga into a series and turns out you don't even like it. this is also a good way to new discover manga. if you cannot find a specific manga or you don't have a library near you, some manga companies have and app to get chapters for free such as the Shonen jump app.

For longer series, do check them out at the library (especially if you're more interested in reading them than collecting them) or at least just buy one or two books at first to see if it's up your alley. Forcing yourself to like something that's popular but not your style is a waste of time and money.

Yep. Viz has an incredible deal going on - sort of hard to compete with that. Wise choice & you'll notice I don't collect many series that I can already read with the Viz app :)

Another thing that I don't think people realize when they're new to any kind of collecting is to not compare your collection to someone else's and think that you need to get this series because someone else has it or that someone has over 500 manga and you only have 50. Everyone starts somewhere and your collection is catered towards you. That was my biggest problem and even now sometimes I'll see someone with over 2000 manga and I get jealous and then I have to remind myself to look at what I have and do I really want certain series because everybody else has them or because I'm actually interested in them. When it comes to getting new volumes for series I'm collecting, I usually look at one of the bookstores' web sites I buy from for the dates and then I write down what I'm interested in on a planner that I have specifically for book releases (manga and regular novels) and then figure out how many of those is possible for me to buy during that month, plus accounting for older volumes that I still need. I don't go on Twitter anymore because it's become so toxic. I don't use Rightstuf because the shipping is outrageous to Canada. The library is a really good way of discovering series you may not have heard of or wasn't sure if you wanted to read it. When I first started collecting manga years ago, I always went to the library to read new releases and because I had nothing else to do some summers (I still sometimes went to the library in 2018 and 2019 and then the pandemic happened and now I mostly read ebooks and audiobooks on the Libby app). I remember going there all the time (it was only a 2 minute drive from my old house) and that's how I started reading One Piece (I stopped at vol. 13 and I don't know if I will ever continue since it's so long and I didn't enjoy it enough to continue for so many volumes), I read some Naruto manga, discovered Kitchen Princess, Skip Beat, St. Dragon Girl, etc. Anyways, great tips! As someone who hasn't posted any videos in over a year and just watches random stuff like sometimes I'll watch too 10 lists, sometimes I'll watch lost media videos, I didn't know about the first one.

So I just got into buying manga. And I preordered the next 4 volumes for my 4 manga series that I collected. I preordered them from Amazon because I’ll get them the same day they release. If next time I preorder from another website like rightsuff. Am I guaranteed to get them when they release or will I have to wait months.

Any manga recommendation that has smaller volumes but wholesome, i could go with Shojo or Seinin. Currently finished jojo part 1 and 2 (this will be really expensive). I figured i might take a break from Jojo.

Great video as always. I would say, don't be afraid of digital manga / light novels. Most digital stores have samples to see if the light novel / book / manga would be interesting. It may be a good idea to buy the first 1/2 volumes of unknown series as a starter and see how things go from there. When starting out, buy what you actually care for. Read what you have and then buy more. The physical / digital collection should be something which makes you happy to look at :D

I wanted to buy from Book Depository but it just turns out my country is one of the few they don't ship too. And my local bookstore rarely sells the books i want. Plus, there aren't many locals who sells it on Facebook Marketplace. My local public library never has any manga. It seems Ebay is my last resort.

@@BoogieSnacks It was helpful still. There is one thing. I noticed some people don't know how fragile the spine can be and they open the manga up fully, which not only cracks the spine, but can make pages detach from it. I saw this with second hand volumes, especially.

I'm for sure gonna use those tips! But on the topic of sales, if there is a sale on rightstuf or the big holiday sales, if I get the membership, do I also get more of a discount/Can I also use discount codes with the membership? Anyone know?
@boysoldier10002
@boysoldier10002 3 жыл бұрын
Your membership does add onto the existing price for the sale. Discount codes, however, don’t always work. I have a membership and there’s a Kodansha sale right now and both contribute to lowering the price of volumes. I save an additional 36c per book in this sale specifically because of the membership. But they are also labeled with “not eligible for promotional discount” disclaimer. So a code won’t work to lower the prices on those items any further.
@boysoldier10002
@boysoldier10002 3 жыл бұрын
Discount codes can be used on the normal everyday membership-discounted prices, unless marked with the “not eligible for promotional discounts” label. It’ll depend from item to item.
