There are key areas of focus and pressure when pulling on the reins with both hands and pushing with both legs. In this video I explain what really goes on that you can't see from an outside perspective.

Why do people actually think this ist collection? Pulling the head down like this is called rollkur and has obviously nothing to do with good horse riding.
@Ella-pd3zu

The collection isn’t when he’s pulling the horses head it’s when he releases and lets the horse out.He’s asking the horse to be responsible for his body.

Another video. Once again. This is not true collection. It's essentially rollkur. Forcing a head into a frame while hollow and shortening the stride. No true engagement of the hind end. No back lifted. This can cause all kinds of damage mentally and physically. This horse is naturally really well built (and has a QH mind) and can handle this kind of thing better than some horses but it does NOT make it optimal, and definitely not enjoyable for it. This horse is clearly super anxious chewing on the bit. Check out arttoride on youtube for how to truly develop collection, acceptance of contact, and have your equine partner ENJOY working while relaxed in all frames. It cannot be forced if you want to do it right.

Collection in reining is more about a soft feel. These are softening drills , a reining horse rides with a low head position when transitioned to one handed riding...because of the various flexions that are used in reining to soften them. I mean dressage horses for instance are stiff in the neck and rarely have lateral flexion on them. Do you think dressage doesn't cause injuries? Anything that is done in most horse disciplines is not a natural way for a horse to move. Show me a horse running freely in the field like a dressage horse does- with what is considered collection in dressage...
@adrianashilling2573
@adrianashilling2573 3 жыл бұрын
@@lauca6969 Dressage horses have flexion both laterally and longitudinally. They are just not overflexed and rubber necked. When they are bent it is an even bend through the entire spine. The definition of collection is that the horse brings the hind legs further under itself thereby elevating and lightening the forehand. That definition is hundreds of years old. This is NOT collection. It’s actually pretty horrible to watch. The mouth is gaped open and the horse practically puts its chin on its chest every time the rider picks up the reins. Of course this is something you can achieve in a quarter of the time it takes to train a dressage horse to upper levels. Watch some videos of the Spanish riding school and see how much happier those horses look.

@@adrianashilling2573 I'm not sure you understand correct biomechanics of the movement in a horse. Nor the pressure used in dressage horses with their gaping mouths shut with flashes. Reining horses are ridden with their neck long , relaxed. Any softening that is done is to round the back and engage the hind.
@adrianashilling2573
@adrianashilling2573 2 жыл бұрын
@@lauca6969 Since I’m a veterinarian and avid horse rider for 50 years I suspect I understand horse biomechanics at least as well and probably better than you do. Quarter horse people take everything to unnatural extremes. Western pleasure horses look like cripples and their canter is some bastardized gait. Reining horses are more athletic but you still have an obsession with a low head carriage which makes the horses job much harder. You think dressage means pulling on the horses face all the time but when it’s done correctly that is not the case at all. In proper dressage you ride the horse from your leg to your hand and you teach the horse to seek to maintain a light contact with you. That’s called being “on the bit”. The way you demonstrate that a horse is on the bit is that if you keep your leg on and gradually lengthen your reins the horse should seek to maintain the contact as it lengthens its frame.Except at the baby levels, dressage tests include stretching circles . The horse should extend its forward not curl its neck and get behind the vertical. When you “collect” the horse you do it by getting the horse to step under further with the back legs which lowers the croup and elevates the shoulders . The more collected the horse is the more elevated the head carriage becomes but the poll should be the highest point of the horses neck and the head should never get behind the vertical. I admire what reining horses can do despite being forced to hold their head so low which loads the front end and makes all those maneuvers harder..The low head carriage s not my main gripe although I think it looks artificial. What really bothers me is that as soon as this trainer picks up his reins the horses practically put their chin on their chest. And there head gets so far behind the vertical that it impairs the horses ability to see where it’s going and in some instances can limit oxygen getting to the brain. . Horses don’t willingly put their neck in such a constricting position, the do it to avoid the pain from the severe equipment used. Yes there are a lot of bad dressage riders who put their horses heads in a similar position in a practice called “rollkeur”which is banned but the ban is not always upheld. One differences though is that the dressage horses are older and fully mature not 2, 3 and 4 year olds who are essentially babies. Pull up some videos on the royal lippizaners, dressage rider Carl Hess or the sadly deceased Dr Riener Klimke and you will get an idea of what true harmony between horse and rider looks like. This ain’t it. You mentioned that horses at liberty don’t move anything like dressage horses. Actually the opposite is true. Horses playing show the foundation for all the moves done under saddle. What you WON’T see in a pasture is horses running full tilt with their heads a foot and a half off the ground. It there’s a lot of money in reining so I am sure we will continue to see these broken spirited automatons for years to come. Finally, I would like to point out that when you roping horses or other working cow horses they have their heads in a more normal position.

OMG. I ride both Western and dressage. Thought the photo of the vid was showing people what not to do. This is just awful. As many have said, pulling a horse’s head behind the vertical to his chest isn’t training, it’s abuse. This horse is bound to have serious physical ailments, particularly in the neck, in years to come. Just because a horse is willing doesn’t make it a good idea. This horse isn’t thinking for himself, he’s submitting to unnatural pressure. Also, look at the “trainer’s” hands. Is he riding a horse or starting a lawnmower? Ridiculous. Go find some Tom Dorrance/Ray Hunt guidance. This is not how it’s done. Oh, and: we just saw the Olympics, where horses are just peaking at 15-17 years old. How many reiners over 10 years old do we see in competition? Why is that?

This isn't even true collection such a beautiful horse to be ruining with this "technique". For those who will probably attack me and tell me I am wrong please educate yourselves and I would be happy to give you sources.

Real collection is when to horse carries himself, and brings his legs nicely under his body weight... please educate yourself better before trying to educate other people too the wrong methods... the horse is to far back, this is also called rollkür. The horse can't even see the ground infront of him. The horse in the video isn't even properly finnishing his steps because he can't. He is heavy in your hands is because your doing it wrong... pulling is definitly not the way. His hind quarters don't even come nicely under his body that's no collection.... although this is western and not dressage the head should definitly not be all the way back like that. Here I'll give you an example... would a horse naturally walk like that? No because their body is not made for that.

When the head goes back to their chest, how do you know when to release and let them drop the head again? Also how do you get them to keep the collection at a straight line after they figure out how to do it in the circle?

Release is when they feel soft. When they are not bracing, when you feel them collect. You don’t want to drop the head but rather give it back slowly. And for the last point, straightening out; look, outside leg out and ask with inside leg. You want to keep your headset and not drop here which can happen changing direction because we forget we’re riding
