Yeah, it may be due to diversity clauses that some universities have that others don't. I was rejected by the University of Texas at Austin but I got into Johns Hopkins, UCSB. It is a very strange system indeed.

David Wong Haha! You guessed it! I am indeed an American-born Korean-American. I applied to 8 universities and the only one I didn't get into was UT. I went to a private high school, so there is no such thing as "top 7%". My ACT was a 34 and my SAT was a 1500 I think. Also my extracurricular stuff was off the charts (varsity soccer, high school social organizations, tons and tons of volunteer work and shadowing practicing physicians). Due to UT's diversity clause, and the fact that 75% of their incoming freshman class was accepted due to automatic admission (top 7% is the only way to get automatic admission now), you can guess that Asian-Americans make up a very large amount of that 75% in proportion to other minorities. I didn't get in purely because they allowed to take in "x" amount of Asian-Americans each year. Consider this for a moment. Hispanics make up 20% of UT's population while making up 16.3% of the national population. Therefore, UT considers this a fairly represented minority. African-Americans make up only 3.9% of UT's student body while making up 12.6% of the national population. Thus, UT considers this an underrepresented minority. Asian-Americans make up 17.8% of UT's student body, while only making up 4.8% of the national population. You can guess what this means. UT believes that Asian-Americans are vastly over represented. However, they can't not accept most Asian-Americans from getting in due to the automatic admission. So the best thing they thought up of was to remove the automatic admission via standardized test scores and reduce the automatic admission from top 10% to top 7%. So if you are an Asian-American who is not in the top 7% of your graduating class, you have virtually no chance of getting into UT Austin. The sole reason I didn't get into UT is because I went to a private school. Don't let my bad luck discourage you from shooting for UT, as it is an excellent school. If you're a freshman or sophomore in a private high school, I'd recommend you talk to your parents and ask them to transfer you to a public school by the beginning of your junior year. If you don't get into UT Austin and it is your dream school, do not lose hope. There is a massive opportunity for people like you and me to transfer into UT Austin after freshman year because tons of people drop out after their freshman year (I do not feel the need to make this topic race-based, so let's not get into specifics here). UT's acceptance rate for freshman sits around 35-39%, yet their transfer acceptance rate is almost 50%. This is an anomaly, as any other university's transfer acceptance rate is much much lower than their freshman acceptance rate. For transfer admissions, I don't think race is considered as it is for freshmen. It is almost completely based off of GPA and a tiny bit on high school stuff and extracurricular activities in college. I am now going to Texas A&M due to some excellent, excellent, excellent scholarships. I'm currently considering transferring to UT after my freshman year, but I'm already having so much fun right now that it's ridiculous. Sorry for the huge text, but please don't be discouraged. I was really discouraged that I didn't get into UT, but I'm having an excellent time at A&M and am not 100% certain that I want to transfer anymore. You can have an amazing time no matter where you go. Just find the balance between school and socializing and college will be a blast no matter where you end up.

Twenty One Mayday Fall Outs at the Disco ! I can say you just gotta start from freshman year. But don’t it too seriously yet. Don’t stress yourself out but try to get all a’s each quarter every year to get a gpa of at least 4.0 don’t skimp out on studying for acts and sats and don’t forget extra curriculars. But remember no matter how hard you want it there are thousands of kids who want it just as bad. There have been many cases of well qualified applicants getting rejected so don’t aim for just one school. Some people get blindsided setting their goals so high and not thinking about other options that it can really backfire.
