Hey Guys! In this video, John explains his experience as an interviewer for Yale University. He's been doing this for 15 years.
He'll answer:
- What to expect in the College Interview Process
- What's the goal of the interview?
- Will the interviewer know about you before they sit down? Will they have read through your application or essays?
- What kinds of questions can you expect the interviewer to ask?
- What is the interviewer trying to "figure out" about you.
- What will the "output" of the interview be - what does the interviewer prepare afterwards?
- Does how well the interview goes always correlate to if the person gets in?
- Out of every 10 interviews he does, how many get in?
- What's the weight of the interview in the college application process?
Common mistakes:
- Reciting your resume, college essays, etc.
- Answering questions just to make the interviewer "happy"
- telling instead of showing during the interview process
- Just scratching the surface of a meaningful life event and failing to explain how it changed you, and what you want to do going forward
- Focusing too much on being well rounded instead of being "pointy"
- Being too nervous to effectively communicate
- preparing so much that you're just "reciting" the material you've memorized
- failing to have fun in the interview

this has honestly been so helpful! i have a Zoom interview with a Georgetown alumnus tomorrow, and while I’m obviously nervous, I’m also really excited! this helped reassure me and offered new pointers that I hadn’t thought about before. I have my interview for Yale tomorrow and I'm more excited to meet an alumni and talk about Yale than nervous, but I am worried that because I have thought about the interview and possible questions so much - I may come across as robotic or scripted even if I am not. I have an interview really soon, and I know that in interviews at the end sometimes interviewers will ask if they have any questions. Are they asking about if we have questions about the university, them personally, or anything in particular?

For the college essays, how many do you review per person? Like is it only one, or per application/prompt.

I’m currently a high school junior and I’ve always wondered if touching on religion in college interviews and even in college applications is a bad approach? I’ve been wondering lately because for me, my faith is something that has shaped me and made me the kind of person I am today. I’ve wanted to talk about my journey as a violinist and a solo singer at my church’s choir because it’s a big part of my life and feel like my college application/interview would be incomplete without. Regardless, I want to make sure if it’s safe to talk about it or if it’s best that I don’t- just for the near future when I start going through this process.

Yes! Colleges want to hear everything that is very important to you. The interviewers aren’t there to agree with you, want want to know that you are passionate about something, regardless of what that is.

Since all interviews are by video now (2021) and not based on whether there is an alum near you, how do they decide who gets an interview? It doesn’t seem fair that some get interviews and some don’t, since it can hurt or help your chances. Some top schools have done away with interviews for this reason. If they offered interviews for a possible group that they were thinking of accepting, that would be more fair, I think.

A 17 year old is supposed to challenge an adult in a college interview?!? This whole thing makes me crazy.. the expectations of a 17 year old who barely knows themselves or could be shy or hasn’t been coached ($$) for an interview. Kids, don’t believe that the Ivy League etc is the only path to success. Find a school that respects and encourages your natural maturity through mistakes and time.

I have an alumni interview next week for Stanford. And on Stanford's website they say that we shouldnt bring our transcripts or résumés to the interview. But do you prefer your interviewees to bring their résumés with them ?

This guy sounds like a self-serving jerk. "I don't have a list of the student's activities or academics... but I ask for their resume in advance. I start by asking them about an activity we have in common..." :(
