Who paid for my doctorate degree? Me. Who paid for my marriage? Me. Who paid for my cost of living, car, medical/dental, insurance, house, etc? Me. My late-mother passed right before I entered college the first time. My father was severely ill when I returned back to school to finish my doctorate. Never once did I expect any monetary support from my father or my siblings. All of us were struggling. Finished my doctorate with >$155,000 debt, but that’s the path I choose for myself. No matter how destitute u r, the government has many tuition/financial aid packages.

Sister, you were very fortunate to have such loving brother to support you. Most parents do not support their kids through college. My parents never helped me and my in-laws didn’t help my husband either. We took out loans and paid them off ourselves. My son is in college and he’s also taking loans so he can be motivated to get a job and pay his loans later. College is a choice so if you choose to go, you have to take the financial responsibility that comes with it. Congratulations on your success and don’t forget that your brother contributed to it!

I don’t agree with what you said about ..most parents do not support their kids through college.i think most parents support but lack the funds to help ..you also said your parents never helped you with money for college..now are you saying they never help because they had money but didn’t or they couldn’t..theirs a difference..you know most of our parents are poor..even if they wanted too ..they couldn’t and we as kids has to realize that..I don’t blame my parents for anything in life ..as a kid , I use to be mad at my parents for not giving me money when I ask them but as I get older I realize it wasn’t that they didn’t want to..it was they couldn’t..

One thing that parents need to remember is that you don't need to be rich and you don't need buy your kids everything. To show your kids that you love them is through your actions. Hug them, take them to the park, have a small pinic, take a walk, do things that don't require spending lots of money. Don't let your kids feel like you don't love them.

To the sister of this story, don’t let your trauma affect you from being the person and parent you want to be. We have to remember that sometimes our parents are struggling just like us. It’s when we become parents ourselves, we see our parents real struggles, whether it is financially or personally.

For those who expect their parent to support them through college.. when you are done. Are you gonna come and work and give your parents half of your paycheck every month too.. you go to schoo to better YOUR LIFE not theirs. You should find your own money dont expect your parent to fund you.. your parents dont own you anything..

My mother has always told me that my education only benefits me and if they can't afford to help me, I can't blame for it. I was sad when I was younger but growing up, I always knew that she was right. You're not the only one who struggles with support while in school. Now that we know better, we can make it better for our children.

First of all, I want to congratulate you on your huge success!! My dad always said he raised us up but not raised up old. My parents didn’t have much when we were growing up, but my dad always tells us kids to keep going with our education. I took up a big fat loan just to get my BS. My Masters were too expensive and it scared me so I stop going.. pursuing my education wasn’t easy because of life. I kept thinking to myself to not give up, instead at a point in my life it’s too hard and what do you have wheytheres no one to support you emotionally and financially? You only got yourself!! I’m so happy you got an angel that’s your brother who helped you financially even if your parents can’t do nothing for you. I’m glad that in the end you forgave them. Sometimes life’s a struggle, it’s what you are willing to sacrifice and who are willing to help you. Thank you for the reminder to keep on pushing and not give up on one’s dreams and education. Maybe I should go back to school. You are an inspiration. Wishing you all the best!

Once you received your BA/BS, you need to work (at least part-time) and support yourself through your MA/MS. That’s what my husband did. My in laws did not contribute any money towards his education because they were poor with 10 kids. My husband did it all by himself.

Sister, I'm sorry for what happened to your sister and your brother. It's life. Marriages isn't a forever thing in some people. Your parents do not know how to be parents. They're too selfish and only cared about themselves and their needs and cheating ways. You can not blamed it all on them. Your father only care about cheating. Your mother only care about not being without a man in her life. Learned from it and evolved from it. Live your life for you. You have your own children and families now.

It’s a great thing that your brother supported you with financial hardship through your education and gave unconditionally support through your struggles in life. You are very blessed to have him. I don’t judge you on why you ask for your parent’s financial support. All you did was ask to see if you could get help towards your education. In all, great job on achieving your goals in life and making something out of your struggles.

Thank you for sharing your story! My heart breaks for you and your siblings. I, myself was an orphan at the age of 14 and was the youngest out of my siblings but I was very grateful to have older siblings who love and support me as I was their own child. During my second year of college I was so broke and have to get two job but once my two older brother found out they told me to focus on school and let them worry about my school bill because they know if my father was still alive he will not let me worry too. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. Your brother love you dearly and will be watching over you. God bless you and your siblings♥️.

When you pay your own way through college, you'll be more motivated to go to classes, complete your courses, and graduate. If your parents are the ones paying for you to go to college, you tsis tshuas mob siab mus kawm ntawv thus acting like you're a spoiled, ungrateful and greedy idiot. I've seen plenty of college students acting like that when their parents were the ones paying for EVERYTHING!!!

I don’t understand the point of this story. So she could come brag about herself and talk shit about her parents. You talk like you don’t have parents. Your parents are poor and divorced but still loved and cared about you and your siblings. You were not an orphan so don’t make the statement of “tsis muaj niam muaj txiv.” I have been an orphan all my life, was a single mom of two small children, and still paid my way to obtain a Bachelor and a Master.

I pay my own way up and so does my husband (another Dr). Higher education is a choice and you go to school for you. Not, your parents or anyone else. Your expectation is too much! My girls are in their 20 & 23 and they too pay for their our college. This is how one learn to be independent!

Lady, I don't understand why you demanded your parents to fund your higher education? Many of us, including me, had no parents and we supported ourselves throughout doctor degree. You sound like orphans would never have chance to get our higher education. In fact, many orphans did also earn their doctor degree. So what is your problems. I have a daughter. For under graduate degrees, I supported her and she received scholarship. For her graduate degree, she didn't ask for my financial support anymore because she had scholarship and work. So I don't understand why you have problems but others don't. Without patents, many of us orphans were eligible for grants, scholarship, work study, and guaranteed student loans. My children now are not eligible for any grants and subsidized student loans, so my children have to rely on us parents and scholarship. I am proud of a daughter who refused to allow me to help her on her graduate degree because she studied hard for good grades to receive scholarship and she worked.

Regarding education and financial needs, I must agree. However, I believe the logic of this story is more about having a tragic life, and individuals must learn how to accept the challenges and overcome any sorrows and pains. As humans, we have our own unique lives to live from the day we were born to the day we die. We all go through trials and turbulence and just hope to endure through to the end. Love one another. Respect one another. Don't take things for granted. It's such a great story. Thank you!

For the most part, it's our parents that should help fund our higher education. Not ever parents can afford it, though. For her to pursue, she'll have to take on the debts herself. I supported both my son and daughter. I started a trust fund for them as soon as I found out I was pregnant. When they turned 18, they continued on to college. They both joined the military and continued their education. My daughter is a doctor in the Navy. My son is a specialist private contractor for the Navy. They're both doing great and living their life with their own family. As a parent, I can only support them and encourage them to follow their dreams and work hard for what they want. I am a proud parent.
