Getting attention from this IS a benefit. More people need to be told when their opinion is hurting our society. I know 10 years ago I was on the left, and falling into the ignorance put made by the leaders and sheep around me. Here I am, the only Republican in my family at this point. These topics NEED to be discussed and debated. That’s how we protect our children. That’s how we progress towards a healthier world. Charlie was very correct when he said we’re close to a civil war. We need to define our goals in concrete terms and _stop_ thinking that progress is a virtue unless it's progress on the right trajectory. If our goals are actually different we _should_ be divided. What good is pretending to be unified with those who hold incompatible values? I'm not saying we can't coexist, but we can't find a compromise without outlining our differences. Vilifying 'divisiveness' tends to just be one side trying to suppress the other.
