This is Behind The Narrative, a series of video essays focusing on the ability of various media objects to tell stories. For this episode, we analyzed the music video for “Riptide,” a song by Vance Joy. The purpose of this episode was understanding the synergy and simultaneous ambiguity that emerges from the literal adaptation of the lyrics into visuals.

Stabbed hand? Forcibly stopped from reaching for something, ie her dreams. Tied to the tree? Forced to stay with her bf who refuses to move forward for fear of change.

Ok ok I got it the guy he lost his friends cuz they changed and he’s scared that he’s going to loose everything until he meets the woman and in the relationships she finds out that she’s destined for the screen like she’s gonna be an actress so he keeps trying to hold on and him pulling her back is her getting yanked in the music video and she keeps trying to run to the “riptide”/ her career And now that he’s lost everyone he’s running from himself now because he’s realized that his fears are hurting her but he doesn’t want her to be taken away by the dark side which is money, greed, and all the stuff in the world of a famous person.

The funny thing is that Vance actually said he knows “Riptide” is a confusing combination of words and images, and that’s it’s a hard to follow the meaning lol

Vance Joy's family used to stay at the Riptide Motel along the Great Ocean Road between Melbourne and Adelaide when he was a child for their summer holidays. I don't think it's as dark as you're making out. He adored Michelle Pfeiffer in many of her roles.

I thought that this line was in reference to their jealousy. The first lines tell us about his fears any references "pretty girls". (Like maybe he was shy and his friends we're more active on the dating scene.) Then he says all his friends are turning green and "Your The Magician's assistant in their dreams" like he's found this beautiful girl and hooked up with her and they seem to be a great fit. He wants to marry her... "I wanna be your left-handed man". His desire to marry her is a testament to her beauty and class and all those things characteristic of the girl you want to take home to Mom. So all of the sudden he has this great girl And his friends are jealous
