Dr. Stumme makes some solid points in this video. I've openly discouraged people from LS on my channel but the big thing that sticks out here is... Not all LS degrees are equal. I see a lot of people get very lazy LS degrees... they'll take all the easiest classes and have no solid foundation in their studies. DON'T be that person, because you're devaluing your degree. However... what Clifford is suggesting is very different... Figure out what you want to do with your degree, then model your degree with classes that actually serve that purpose. There is a right way to do it... and if you structure it properly, guess what... your degree doesn't suck😆! I will admit, income data for LS Degrees surely includes all the people who have earned these degrees in the laziest way possible. So don't be that person, do it right. Figure out which job you want, or which grad programs you're trying to get into and structure your degree accordingly. If you do... you'll be just fine!
@CollegeHacked
@CollegeHacked Ай бұрын
Ryan, thanks for the response! And I agree on the backwards planning elements of what you're saying here--structure your degree based on your goals. Wonderful stuff. I'll differ by saying that it's okay to be lazy if lazy will accomplish your goals. There are so many use cases for Chipotle majors, and many people out there balancing a lot of life concerns that it's just not feasible or practical or necessary to try to squeeze the most possible out of a bachelors degree. For example, while you normally wouldn't get a Chipotle Major if you wanted to become an engineer or a nurse, it'd be quite all right to take the easiest classes you can find if all you need is the piece of paper for, say, a quick promotion or a generic grad program without specific admissions requirements. Keep up the good work helping people and getting the word out there about college/degree hacking. :)
@9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671

The main reason I disagree here is that I'd much rather have something like a lazy business or tech degree, with little to no 3rd party credits, than a lazy LS degree with 3 years of 3rd parties. If you do it right, it's just as fast (I've seen full BS degrees in 3 months from zero, with zero 3rd party credits and just a few hundred out of pocket... all while being a part time student). And if you ever lose that job that just wants any degree, in my opinion your foundation is a stronger for both other jobs and grad programs. Having said that, getting degrees faster is awesome! I hope people continue to get inspired because if a couple of joe's like us can do this, anyone can! Every student is different, and the cool thing here is... there are so many ways to accelerate. Find what's best for you, and go for it people!

Another piece is the advantage the liberal arts degree holder has in being a well-rounded person having learned to think analytically and possessing many of the soft skills employers seek. I've been re-reading "There is Life After College" by Jeffrey Selingo as I'm helping my son navigate his degree path. Selingo argues a liberal arts education is the best preparation for the working world. A LinkedIn article he wrote talks about how liberal arts majors are found in all fields and are thriving. Two parts to my question 1, when you apply for city jobs in my state they ask for transcripts and the College should be regionally accredited. 2. Once I graduate from my regionally accredited school and I provide my transcripts will the Sophia credits show different on my transcript or will it be on a completely different transcript?
@CollegeHacked
@CollegeHacked 26 күн бұрын
When you graduate, all the sources of credit will be on your final transcript in different sections divided by institution. Usually Sophia/Study show up as “ACE” but sometimes (if you transfer directly from Sophia/Study and not jointly through Credly.com) it will say “Sophia.” The majority of city jobs are unlikely to know what they are looking at, and they typically just want to see the GPA/major, etc. They aren’t scanning to rule out those with ACE credits. :) But always good to check into that more, every situation/employer is different.

I've got 100 credits from another university and SNHU took most my credits. I only need 30 credits, but I originally wanted to get a BA in Technology OR Business. I will need 50+ or so credits for that at SNHU. Is it a compromise to get a Liberal Arts degree? My end goal is to work from home as a programmer (I believe most learn from hands on experience outside of school) because I am in the middle of homeschooling and raising my kids. As they get older I can work more. As a back up if I can't work from home, is a Liberal Arts efficient? I'm also considering UMPI as an option. Context: I've been taking 1-2 classes a semester and moving slow as hell towards my BA. I'm definitely also feeling burnt out haha

What kind of programming do you want to do? It’s not impossible to get into that right now, but there has never been a worse time to break in 😅 ChatGPT is really changing the landscape of tech (and everything) so it isn’t the safe and lucrative direction it once was. It’s now insanely competitive and the people who tend to make it are those who are obsessed with programming. As in, love building things in their free time and would do it even if they weren’t being paid. If that’s how you feel, then don’t let me discourage you.
