Trash talking is normal *in general*, and targeting race, gender, or sexuality just happens to be particularly easy because it doesn't require in-depth knowledge of the person. Trashing their driving skills or strange laugh shows more intimacy.

I think that because race gender or sexuality are usually a lot more sensitive things, it shows that your friendship is deeper because you can joke about those things. I wouldn't joke about someones sexuality if I didn't know the person well enough, while laughing about someones driving skills is alot easier, because it isn''t so personal or sensitive.

"Trash talking is normal in general" is quite a hottake to me. Like most people, in my experience, are not on board with the overgrown school bullying - now smiley! - they have to repeatedly deal with from the same set of few toxic people in their life, but by one or the other reason don't go into the confrontation about it - like if it clearly didn't help in the past

I grew up with people my age who all loved each other very much but loved to tease each other (very simple, silly things, like, you suck at this video game -- never anything truly serious) -- it can be a way to show affection as long as you keep boundaries.

It's a confidence thing. Men especially do this to other men as a test of self-esteem. 99% of the time men say these things because they know their friend can handle it and return it back. This challenge turns into a funny game, but it isn't funny if it isn't also blunt and yes, "bigoted." Basically it's a mutual check of strength.

As a bisexual here are some common jokes that are not too offensive that straights can make about bi people as long as you're friends with them - jokes about finger guns - jokes about not being able to sit straight - jokes about peace signs - jokes about awkward thumbs up - jokes about awkward shrugging - jokes about immediately thinking about the bi pride flag when seeing the colors blue, pink and purple - jokes about cuffed jeans - jokes about tucked shirts - jokes about oversized sweaters - jokes about flannel clothing Of course we have more jokes in our community but most of them are more relatable humor that could be perceived as offensive when coming from non bisexual (sorry for any grammatical mistakes I may have made English is not my native language)
