2 жыл бұрын

With Barry Season 3 starting this Sunday night on HBO, I recently conducted an extended interview with Bill Hader, where he broke down the making of the series and revealed what goes on behind-the-scenes to bring one of the best shows on television to life. During the wide-raging conversation, Hader revealed how they write Barry, why Season 3 jumps ahead six months, how they balance the drama and comedy, what the new season is about, why eighth-of-a-page scenes kill you, why Barry is the toughest to write for, what it was like for him to film really motional scenes as Barry while also directing the episode, how they filmed the incredible oner in the first episode of Season 3, and how he worked with Carl Herse (his director of photography) to have the light reflect Barry’s mood. He also talked about his love of Goodfellas, Children of Men, Spinal Tap, how the show changed in the editing room, and so much more I could never list it all here.
I got to watch the first four episodes of Barry Season 3 before talking to Hader and they’re brilliant. Once again, Hader, Alec Berg, and everyone that works on the show have crafted a season that mixes the drama, comedy, and fantastic filmmaking to create one of the best shows airing on any channel. In addition, Season 3 is a real departure from the first two seasons because Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) acting class has closed, which leads to a completely new structure for the series. Trust me, if you’re a fan of Barry, you’re going to love the new season. For more on Barry Season 3 you can read our review. Barry also stars Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Burns, D’Arcy Carden, and Michael Irby.
Since I know some of you like watching video, while others prefer reading the text, I’m offering the Bill Hader interview two ways: you can either watch it in the player above or read the conversation below.
Again, Barry Season 3 starts this Sunday night so set your DVR.

It's interesting to hear him talk about Barry not having anything to do because the idea that he has nothing else going on *is* his story. The way he moves through life is similar to how he behaved in the second season, when he killed tons of people in search of Fuches. He's methodical and has his eyes on one goal. Meanwhile, there's chaos being left in his wake. Seeing more of those waves of chaos affect people in season three was so satisfying. Cannot wait for season four!

Bill reminds me of a blending of great talent from Mel Brooks and Alfred Hitchcock. He is so dynamic in his abilities; for instance in season 3 episode 2 of Barry, the main character explodes verbally at his leading lady. That expression of emotion is not "per say" hard to do, but the emotional build up in the character (like a beautiful ford GT going from 30 to 215 in a hair of a second) is hard to express. seeing bill portray a man with severe ptsd created by the death of his old marine friend: by his own hand no less, was superbly performed. The leading lady should receive awards for her portrayal. She is a wonderful talent.

When they took the acting class out of season 3 it made the show take to a new equation. Before it was "hitman goes to acting class". But in season 3 it becomes "S1: Barry needs Fuches in order to get by but it is not working so now he is starting to defect to Mr. Cousineau. S2: Barry needs Mr. Cousineau to get by, but it is starting to get complecated so he is starting to defect back to Fuches. S3: Barry has nobody but himself and it's definitely not working and now he is imploding.:

I like how Hader mentions that, as writers, they try their best to give even the extras something to work with. And it's true! There will be moments when even side characters steal the show, like the lesbian couple with too many dogs, and that's partly due to the writing being so good.

Yes, it's clear Barry doesn't get that there are consequences for his actions. His search for redemption is futile if he doesn't face that there are consequences-like losing Cousineau as an allie. He also is misguided in thinking it's about changing his nature. I think being a murderer is his training and conditioning, not his nature.

Have really enjoyed watching him go from his early days on SNL, supporting roles in Superbad and Hot Rod, had been my favorite cast member a long time before Stefan. Now fast forward to Barry and he's writing directing and starring in one of the only TV shows I watch. I didn't particularly like the whole storytelling with the young actress coming off a bit too woke or whiny and focusing on this very ancillary to the main story character having not only such an impact but spending a lot of possibly unnecessary scenes getting to something that could have happened without that character completely. Maybe it was the choices of the young actor i didn't enjoy as much and maybe felt like it stood out in a show that can get serious but didn't think it needed to take itself that seriously.

@daniellamcgee4251 2 жыл бұрын
@@Guerrilla_Grodd I think I see your point. I agree that many weed smokers are articulate and intelligent, but the chemical effects of weed dulls brain function, more than people who smoke are aware. Long term studies have now confirmed that regular weed smoking can also result in permanent brain damage to the executive function area of the brain which effects memory, planning, and organizational skills, etc. In adolescents, with heavy weed smoking, the natural development of this part of the brain to develop is usually inhibited. Marijuana use also reduces the response of the reward centres of the brain, which is why it is common for people to lose motivation, as they aren't getting the usual pleasure from doing things. With the natural bio-chemical reward system dulled with weed, pre-existing depression and anxiety can be increased. People with Marijuana-Use Disorder. (almost daily use, and unmotivated), can lose jobs, relationships, etc. Their lives can be effected in the same way untreated depression can. Also, heavy weed smoking can cause anxiety and depression, and psychotic disorders. A very small percentage of people have the gene for schizophrenia that is triggered by heavy marijuana. This happened to a close family member of mine, and a friend. I know of 3 others with diagnosed marijuana triggered schizophrenia. I have witnessed the damage of heavy weed smoking. No one knows if they have that gene until it's too late. I am actually trying to counteract the reputation that marijuana is harmless. Most people don't know the risks, and that marijuana is 4x stronger now than in the 1960s. As you know, 'dope' is also an adjective for something very positive. I am not discriminating against the people who use marijuana. Many are also creative and sensitive people who are self- medicating because they don't have other tools that are effective enough in the immediate, to get through life. They usually have emotions, or thoughts, they are trying to numb, or escape from. I have compassion and understanding because I have been through a lot myself. But recreational marijuana itself deserves to have a negative reputation. Intelligent people actively reducing their intelligence is tragic. And the problem with slow brain damage from weed smoking is that they aren't aware of it, so they are less willing to make changes in their best interest.

Bill looks so exhausted, it's really painful to watch, honestly. I feel him on the deepest level possible, it's just horrible. And the questions were very bright but I don't think the interviewer realized that he's allowed to laugh too. It's not an FBI recruitment interview it's a conversation with an artist. Maybe Bill would've opened up if the interviewer was more accessible, it's pretty unpleasant to watch someone cutting off another person's laugh or stream of thoughts to 'get things done.' Too bad.
