Today's video's, Gathering in the ewes from the mountain for the ram.
it's that time of year again to make some lambs for next spring.
we dag the ewes, Give stockine with copper mineral drench, and check all their udders, and condition.
some were culled as of old age and bad udders. also Sally our main sheep dog had a litter of pups.
feel free to ask any questions about any of my videos

In the beginning the most important thing for puppies is to keep them dry, warm and on clean bedding. You can deworm puppies at 3 weeks of age with liquid pyrantel pamoate from your vet and then 2 weeks after that. If they have a worm load, you want to get rid of it as soon as possible. With 7 puppies, Sally should be fed puppy food kibble for the extra calcium/calories and free choice and if you can two small meals a day with kibble soaked in water so she takes in more water. She should have access to clean water at all times, just be sure the bowl/bucket is high enough the pups can't crawl in and drown. You can start weaning the puppies at 3 to 4 weeks by creating a gruel with the same puppy food soaked in hot water (feed at a luke warm temperature), or better yet soaked in goat milk if you have access to some (not cows milk). I would not recommend working Sally while she has pups, because an injury to her mammary glands running over boulders or through wire fences, could mean you have to bottle feed the pups. Far easier to just retire her until she's dried up, than take that chance. She should get time out of her puppy pen several times a day for a walk. Keep a close eye on Sally if she starts to have tremors, and stiffness in her legs, this is calcium deficiency, the same as can happen in sheep and requires immediate vet intervention. Love your auto drafting gate. Are you sure TePari doesn't owe you money for design infringement?

😂😂😂 I'm looking forward to using the tepari system. It will be here early next year, That has so much information. I write it all down here besides me. Will it be obvious if she has calcium deficiency? I have no experience with puppies really so I appreciate all the help

Dad would do well on the rolled oats (dump the Kellogg’s) there would be no stopping him. We help Ireland’s economy out by buying Flahaven’s organic porridge oats. As an expert knitter myself, I find it so sad that wool has no value, even so woollen yarn is very expensive. I am impressed by the dad powered shedding gate. How many Labradors are there in the world able to jump a fence?. I had a German Shepherd x collie who worked like that.

Hi Glyn, best wishes for a successful breeding and lambing season. It was great to see the sunshine on the hills and countryside after all of the rainy days. With Sally, I wonder if when she jumps out of her pen, she needs a break and will go back in with the pups to feed. With being a first time mom she may not be experienced enough to do that. Usually the mom's are very protective and nurturing of their young. With the Rams will their be a way for you to tell which sheep the Rams bred according to their paint color? I think that with each video you have a nice mix of story time with your dad and other chores around the farm. Take care and have a great week.

Sally's a class dog she done very well so she did. Cracking little pups. See how she jumped the gate 😂ready to go so she is she means business. Don't dose her till pups at least a couple weeks. As for food what my owl lad used to do with our pups was get a bowl of muesli n soak them warm untill the whole lot absorbs the water and expands to the last. Theyl go to town an back on it n it won't mess with there digestion the water makes a right job of it.

The wee syringe fits onto the bottle nozzle and the dosage on the body of it. You just gently put it in their wee mouth, then. A lot of our ewes are like the blackie beside the beast with the bad udder in the video; very hardy. An old farmer friend of mine used to put the Border Leicester onto these beasts as he maintained he got a bigger lamb, with better wool and mouth that turned into a hardier ewe. He then put the Suffolk onto these ewes and the lambs were outstanding. I have hardy blackie hill ewes and I've put the Charollais on some of the later lambing ones. They worked really well on the blackie, but are to bare to put on a Cheviot. If you're into Cheviots, try and get the Cheviots from Lairg, as they are the right hill, hardy Cheviot with the shorter ears. They have size and they keep flesh on themselves easier than the more park types. Always pick rams from an area like ours that's very acidic and that they're tick acclimatized. Everyone bangs in nowadays about muscle scanning and having as little fat as possible but, as our Vet says, in our terrain if you have no fat cover you have no meat, or sheep as it'll be a skeleton. When hardiness is lost it needs drastic measures to get it back. Gun robh maith agaibh 🇮🇪👍

@@sheepshepherd sorry that come over rude written by me 🤦🏻‍♂️. I’ve had them melt as been pushed so much when been told otherwise. I know use innovis rams they honestly come out in same nick as they go in . All rams guaranteed for 12 months & their a very good company to stand by you any slight bother it’s a refund credit off vet proof . I used Aberfield to cross in on me Brecon cheviot to create maternal off spring replacements. I’ve also used their Aberblack on cheviots which create a nice ew lamb bred for meat really or maternal . Think that cross is very popular in Ireland? Like a Suffolk x but New Zealand genetics . They all lamb outdoors around 600 ft . Very few assisted . I’ve bought a Primera this year to put over the me first cross Aberfield x Cheviot. They be purely for the meat market that cross not maternal. Primera is NZ genetics. Their seriously sharp fit rams . On a percentage off the flock I also use their Cheviot rams to cross back on me cheviot ews . Their lambed on higher ground . So me flock consist of about 50/50 in cheviot & then Aberfield first cross over Cheviot. I’ve retained about 30 first cross Aberblack x Cheviot ew lambs this year that be interesting next year . Not going bother lambing the ew lambs in spring this time

Yeah the five star rams are worth the extra few quid in my experience. Don’t get any extra lambs but you should get better quality ones and they are usually at least a fortnight ahead of the ordinary lambs. We find that we have a lot more gone before weaning but then again we are inclined to put the better ewes with the better rams so that will also give them a better start. Proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say at this stage we don’t have any commercial rams ( texels or Charolais’s ) that are not at least 4 stars across the board with most four and five mixed we did buy a five star across the board lad last year and he is a very good sheep and got some great lambs . We need 5 to 7 hoggets every year so we have to work off a budget and buy the best we can afford as we have a good few rams for breeding ewe lambs as well ( for replacements)

Hi Glyn we have roughly 300 sheep in Ballingeary Cork and this year we made 110 euro 😢 it's an absolute discrace and people that use wool are quite successful like I go to Tralee and there's a wool shop called Marias wool shop and there very successful. Every time I see about 12 people in there very happy with their new jumper or pants. It's a disgrace for the farmer's 😢😢😢🐏🐏🐑🐑👎👎👎

Hi Glyn; glad to see you and the father again. His history stories are fab. I've bred quite a few litters, myself,and although I'm no expert, Tayfield in the comments is more or less doing what I do. May I add, without taking anything from anybody, that I often slaughter an old dry beast and mince it for the dogs. I add the raw mince to the bitch's add lib food and mix the mince into ready break, or wheatabix, whatever I have in and add warm lambs milk to this gruel for the pups to start lapping and eating. We start them on beeta puppy kibble softened in the warm milk when their wee jaws can handle it. This is where the mince is handy. With the worming; it's the same as Tayfield said. We start them at three weeks then a fortnight later on a syringe-able wormer. It's on the bottle how often , after that and we adhere to it. The bitch should be well wormed, before hand, and it does no harm, I'm told, to worm her now. You'll see worms after the first dosing, which is quite normal as it comes through the bitch's milk, we've been told. My mate, who trained me to train the sheepdogs, always has a wee eye dropper to drop a drop of cod liver oil into their wee mouths as we give cod liver oil to man and beast in the Hebrides against the damp. Sally is a fit, athletic bitch so I would keep her off work as she won't stop till she got the staggers. I've also seen a bitch that got one of the paps ripped whilst working whilst she had a litter. I'm not sure if you can still get " stress" but, it was a very good calcium and mineral powder you mix in with bitch and puppy food. Vetzhyme pills are very good, too. I have a nervous dog so I add good quality brewer's yeast and omega oil in his food. Don't worry about raw mince as the pups will be well wormed and meat carries it's vitamins better in its raw form. My dogs get a couple of raw eggs a week, too.
@sheepshepherd
@sheepshepherd 7 ай бұрын
Really appreciate the comment John, plenty information there for me, I need it as I don't know much about pups. You reckon to give Sally some raw eggs and mince so, I'll do just that, What age roughly will puppies start nibbling at stuff. And is a straw bed OK to put them on?
@johnmartin7597
@johnmartin7597 7 ай бұрын
@@sheepshepherd Hi Glyn, thank you for your kindness. I used to use hay, but found it got a bit "tangly" for them. It might be fine but, the best thing is to make a box, or put a board tight across in Sally's bed, in order that she can lie comfortably and all the pups suckling. This is to stop them wriggling away too far from the mother and getting cold in a bigger area. It'll allow Sally to hop out for a wee bit piece as she needs it. In the beginning, I would keep check that all are on a pap and doing about the same as regards growth. Their wee eyes will start opening about 10 days, if I mind right, and you can put the milk in something like an old style biscuit tin, just warm like blood, and put a pup or two standing in it to start lapping. They'll even start licking each other then and you'll be amazed how soon they start lapping up the gruel. Ready Break is excellent to thicken the lambs milk and you can add drops of the mince in . If you give tinned meat instead of raw mince, in the gruel, our Vet tells me Chappie are the best tins so that's what I use. It's very strong so they don't need too much. Sally could have as much of anything as she'll eat, as the pups will put a burden on her body. There's differences in what weight different bitches lose when milking but, so long as she gets addlib with plenty meat she'll be fine. We used to, when we could get it, feed a teaspoon of fishmeal to a dog that was prone to being a poor do-er; I never chanced it on a milking bitch, though, as I didn't know would it make the pups scour. Keep an eye on the pups' cac and, if it's reasonably solid they'll be fine. Folk here, long ago when times were harder, would never leave a full litter at a bitch. It's easy nowadays, though, as there are good complete feeds about. I think yous in the sister country are ahead of us as regards good feeds and reasonable suppliers. I take sheep medicine over from the sister country- Fane Valley. The wee beeta puppy seeds soften lovely in the Ready Break and the lamb's milk and you can mash them it after three-four weeks. just before three weeks , and I continue for as long as the meat lasts, raw mince in their food. When they're moving about and eating with gusto-5/6 weeks- you can do away with the ready brek and give them the softened beta puppy and a little chappie. Plenty clean water for Sally, as well, and for the pups when you reach the beta puppy and chappie stage. Beta puppy is a complete meal , so don't be afraid of it on its own with a little meat and water when they're eating heartily . I give them the lambs milk, if it hasn't run out, right till they leave at ten weeks if they want it. You have to be careful you just make it a tenth of the strength than you would for a lamb. When you make the wee barrier/step in Sally's bed to contain the pups I would use newspaper. It's warm and they won't get smothered/lost in it as they would in hay, or a blanket folding over and trapping them. On newspaper they sometimes get wee callouses from crawling about, but that never bothers them and they won't get smothered. You'll be amazed at how tough and how well they do, and Sally, just as Good created them. I'm no expert but, anything just shout me👍👍

Ok I know a lot about puppies, First sally needs to eat really good quality dog food and as much as she wants. 2nd if she's nursing them and there full and there clean and sleeping and she's being a good mamma., then she can come out and work with you guys. You know its in her nature to be working all the time so if the puppies are OK she can work a bit. See how it goes 3rd these puppies will be more mobile and get there teeth about at 3-4 weeks then you can introduce soft puppy food that has been soaked for them. Saly will probably wean them on her own around 7-8 weeks and they will be teething then and also be able to eat puppy small pellet food. My advice does not take into account any puppy that is sick or a little behind in size or development. Any of those can require a lot of extra care. By the time there 7-8 weeks old they should be able to follow her around and pretend there BIG sheep dogs. After there weaned they need to keep sleeping with Saly and being around her to 12weeks and then they can go to new homes. I don't know what the law is in Ireland But I like to keep my puppies no worming or shots until they go there there new homes. Good luck I'm here if you have any questions ?

Sally and her pups - is Sally on puppy food because she should be started with 1/2 normal food and 1/2 puppy food so not to upset her tummy, this helps make good quality milk without taking everything out of the mother (thin mother dog) (Sally should have been on puppy food 2 weeks into her pregrancy) - also once the pups get to 2.5-3 weeks (eyes and ears open) they start eating puppy mush which is when you make puppy kibble into powder (ask at home before you use a kitchen machine) and add goats milk (same stuff as at the vets and cheaper from supermarket) to the dry powdered kibble making it like a soup for the first meal - by the time those pups are 5-6 weeks old they are on hard kibble - every feed you give the pups is one less feed that their mother gives them - this also helps keep Sally not get mastitis and she won't have low hanging boobs in fact done right she won't look like she has had pups at all - watch some of youtuber Doodles of NC I know she is not a doodle but this lady is a professional breeder her girls are US$3.5K so knows her stuff - they also have a website with contact details is you want to ask questions

I forgot wormimg - at 2 weeks and every 2 weeks after that - check with the vet the currrent recommodation of product used - don't forget to keep their little nails trimmed or they will scratch up Sally and cause mastitis - a human nail clipper will work - just google how and a youtube vlog will come up to show you how - just clip the tips and really need doing each week - once the puppies go onto puppy food mum will no longer clean up after them so it's newspaper that needs cleaning up twice a day - Are u keeping a pup to train on? Or are you waiting for a future litter - normally 3-4 litters then spayed @@sheepshepherd
