My father was a country doctor . Before we has ambulance services and EMT's doctors in private practice were called at their offices or home to be first responders to accidents and other threats to human life such as homicides, fires, and natural disasters. Sometimes he would toss me and my sister in the car and take us to watch and learn what the cost of stupidity, carelessness, or downright evil looks like. I remember him being called to the site of what railroaders call a "'Prairie Meet' a head on collision of two trains. In this case two frieght trains barrelling at 70 miles an hour into each other. The two lead engines formed a mangled archway that anyone wirhout a lick of sense could easily walk under with room to spare. This was followed by a quarter mile of derailed and mangled freight cars in both directions.There were sightseers and souvenier hunters and looters all over the place with state and locat police tryinng to control the crowd and shoo off or arrest people looking for freebies of either mangled train parts as souveniers or the contents of ripped cars for gsin.. There was also fire trucks and ambulances from ;larger cities that had them as far away as fifty miles from the accident standing by should there be another catastrophe. Luckily, there was only one fatality as one fireman elected to jump from the locomotive only to be crushed by a derailed box car. The other occupantsof the two engines stayed with the locos and though injured, survived the ordeal. It was just one of the many introductions to mayhem I witnessed as a doctor's child. It made me appreciate the fragility of life and respect for the people who protect us from our own folly. It also taught me not to choose medicine as a career. I became an attorney and still deal with the aftermath of stupidity, carelessnes, and downright evil, but in the confines of a climate controlled office or court room and not on the side of road or rail in snow, rain. cold, heat, and all hours of day and night like my father did.

Dude… who has ever said you can’t stop on a mainline…? There’s a PLETHORA of reasons why… red signal due to trains, misaligned switch, crew work, junction, or track authority, then you have stuff like broken rail, train striking a car, or mechanical issues, on and on…

As for the crew of the container train: they ended up on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of this investigation. Evelyn: "We will not tolerate anyone who puts others in grave danger. The reports that we received hereby conclude that the Amtrak engineer failed to notify the dispatcher about the container train blocking the mainline..." Lara: That was the statement made by the spokesperson for the Atlantic division of Amtrak Evelyn Mok... A similar statement was made by the Mid-Atlantic Rail Safety Commission about the incident and will meet up with both Mok and Reams to address both sides of the situation. THE ONLY WAY THE DRIVER COULD HAVE NOT BEEN AWARE THE STOPPED TRAIN IS HE MAY HAVE JUST DOZED OFF FOR A SECOND OR TWO OR A MEDICAL ISSUE.. EVEN POSSIBLE IS A MECHANICAL ISSUE. I HOPE THERE WAS NO SERIOUS INJURUES OR DEATHS.

What was the injury report for the passengers and train crew? There must have been quite a jolt, and I suspect several were thrown around and could have suffered head injuries and bone breaks.

Every new video I get less and less hope of practical crashes. Instead of the engineer waiting until 100 feet away to brake he should have flipped the emergency as soon as the train was insight. It also seemed he was idling for the station right in front of him, providing even more reaction time. The nose of the locomotive also would have been crushed like a pancake instead of riding the wellcar like a ramp. I started loosing hope after this channel made a video of a single tie logged in the rail derailing a full on freight haul.
