A super big brain tip I heard about for picking your shading color is that your highlights are closer to the color of your light source, and your shadows are closer to the color of your saroundings. So, in an open area during the day anything that isn’t in shadow is tinted slightly yellow, cuz the sun is yellow, and anything in shadow is blue, cus the sky is blue. So you can get more realistic colors by literally picking up the colors from the background image and integrating them into the shading. Another note! I find that sometimes I resist tinting everything that isn’t in shadow b/c it feels like I’m losing the beautiful colors that I so carefully picked, but you really shouldn’t be afraid to change the color of everything in your art when shading. Even if your beautiful red apple is looking a little yellow in the bright sun, that can just make it even prettier
