Its poor writing. As highly classified and protected as the Stargate project is, no one less than the president and Secretary of the Air Force would be talking to the general about teams like this coming to the base. General Hammond only has 1 star on each shoulder. That makes him a Brigadier General, only 1 rank above Colonel. Still you're right, he doesn't take orders from lesser ranks.

@@detail11 Nope. 2 stars. You can clearly see them when he's "inviting" Maybourne to go see the airman about guest quarters at the 2:00 mark. The real clear one is far too high on the epaulette to be a Brigadier General's single star placement.

The character of Colonel Mayborne gets a lot of hate; but quite frankly that is his role. Tom McBeath did a great job portraying a relatable and humanized "villain" in the context of the show. The NID and characters like Colonel Mayborne give the show depth and integrity. Not all of the bad guys are stereotypical alien villains. I appreciate that self awareness in sci fi and as such think we should acknowledge and respect Tom McBeaths wonderfull performance and commitment to his role as antagonist.

Hammond of Texas was, is and will always be my favorite Stargate character. Don S. Davis always put in such a powerful performance. I love how he rank checked Maybourne with that quick but power look at his epaulets and then left absolutely no question of who was in in charge. Ole Harry left without a word because he knew better.

0:48 what makes this so much better is the fact that, Richard Dean Anderson would ask the air Force advisors, if he was playing jack O'Neill right. They said that some of the lines he said where things that the air Force can't say, without getting into alot of trouble. I presume this is one of those lines.

Maybourne was not an evil person. Misguided perhaps, uninformed without a doubt, self important for sure, but not evil. If you really watch, he was always trying to do what he honestly thought was best to insure the safety and security his country and his planet, even if he had to bend the rules to do it. Okay, maybe his country first, but he was career military. As the series went on, he grew, learned and eventually he and Jack even became reluctant allies when the need arose. Jack even seemed to give Maybourne a certain grudging respect, if not complete trust, at the end. That change and growth was why Maybourne was one of my favorite semi-regular characters in the series. As someone else posted, "He went from being the character you loved to hate to the character you hated to love."

Old Stargate was great. Not that there weren't still some great moments later on, but the show just wasn't the same after season 5. The Nox and the Tolans were great, and the Goa'uld were still threatening. No human replicators, no "Ancients", no bad cosplaying, half-ascended system lords, and only a vague hint of the 'ascension' nonsense that infected the rest of the series. It had the right balance of fun adventure but still had a good score and a sense of gravity. And Daniel had his hair.
