The Long Island Railroad comes to Train Sim World in the latest expansion for the train simulator. I'm taking the M7 out for a first drive after riding the line to Jamaica. Yes. I will be making jokes. The question is whether I will also be making stops at the right time and completing the route effectively.
I've got this under control.
The key for this expansion was supplied by the happy-go-lucky gang at Dovetail Games. I'm just guessing they hoped I'd make a video to accompany the release of the route. Ha! More fool them, I've made a video 2 days after the release of the route! Yeah. Sticking it to the man right there.

I'm born @ Jamaica Queens hospital, it's 3 blocks away from the station + the house i grew up at was Very Close : i watched them build the air train before moving to long island. The Dev's must have taken lots of pictures as the graphics look spot on, including the audio !!

@Jimmy De'Souza Oh ok, there probably aren't any PA systems in train's up your way. PA systems are more common in suburban trains in big cities, etc. That's how it is over here in NZ anyway.

Well done Colonel! You're "spot on" with your geography narrative! You had me AND your passengers rolling in the aisles (for completely different reasons of course). A wonderful morning comic diversion drinking my coffee (trying ever so hard to have it not come flying out my nose!) while you muck about on the LIRR! A wonderful way to spend the quintessential American holiday of Thanksgiving listening to the running monologue of the hilarious British Colonel on the most unique American railway that's nothing like the rest of Country! "Punch it Chewy!" (and of course there's no acceleration, just like Han)... I'm still mopping coffee spray off of my monitor!

Few things from the start.... First: inaccurate simulation (game design wise); it is far to clean and the train works..... First and a half: ....Until the Colonel does it right and breaks everything. LIRR trains always randomly stop and hold for random periods of time for no other reason than to make everyone late. Second: 8:20 Accurate train announcement. Third: welcome to New York, where you can visit the world all in one place. Now get out. Also those signals are PRR style signals. Although you could use colors, and many do, no colors are necessary as the position of the lights tell you everything. Straight up and down is "all clear, proceed" Diagonal is "caution, proceed at signal speed" and Straight side to side is "STOP!"

I would rate this journey 4 out of 5 Colonels. Knows his stuff. Makes it happen. Gets it done. However the trolley service leaves much to be desired.

The signalling system on the Eastern Seaboard is rubbish, I’ll give you that. This is the basics: -Horizontal means “stop” -Vertical means “continue” -Diagonal means “caution” At least that’s what I think it is. I’m not going to claim that I’m very well-versed in East Coast railroading. Maybe ask a real driver from that area for a more detailed answer.

Great video colonel failure if you want to under stand the signals of LIRR look up PRR signals they should tell you the meanings of each signal like if the signal is showing lights going up and down that means proceed, angled lights mean proceed slow and left to right means stop

Any time you're late just ascribe it to "police activity," "a customer in need of medical aid," "equipment trouble," or "a late arriving train in single track territory." If you check the LIRR twitter you'll see that's the issue in 99% of all cases.

When you do the emergency brakes, you don't have to do a "reboot", you just have to put it back into forward.

The squeal on the game’s M7 is a bit higher than the real life M7. Side note: that’s the cleanest I’ve EVER seen Nostrand Avenue and the train.

@@colonelfailure Yes, most of the time. If you have a train that has been running for a couple hours up and down, you may find spill marks, papers and empty cups but not that much. They do have sometimes have duct tape (Blue to fit in with the seats) residue on the seats (About every row has at least 1 taped up seat). Otherwise everything is clean. My station is not in the game.

Hey colonel, when you stopped in Long Island City the track carried onto the buffer - I thought maybe the stop point that you kept trying to hit was for the rear of the train, and you could have carried on until the buffer - cheers, and I love all your videos!

If your gear can handle it and you like the routes available TSW is more fun to "experience", however TS is more complete and has a huge range of routes and locos to choose from.

Actually brake charging only can be done with max brakes and everytime you stop you need to charge brake above 90psi at max brakes applied.

This is why I don't get speed based signalling. At 32:09 the signal appears to show a right diverge (rather than left) with the way that the signals are, when it's actually just showing caution at a lower speed.

Jamaica is a town in New York, right by nostrand avenue, dummy. It’s literally two stops away. Same with Kew Gardens, but it’s one stop away. And that long line, that is the main line. Pretty much every train, no matter where they started, go there (unless they go to Atlantic terminal) And, that isn’t the end of the line. The end of the line is underground. -LIRR Commuter (me)
