Learn how to mix 12 colors of the rainbow using the primary colors, red, yellow and blue. This is the first watercolor lesson I recommend for beginners. The color mixing can also be applied to other paint mediums, like acrylic, and oil. Step one is to draw a circle and divide it into 12 pie slices, label it, then we will start with Yellow and move around the color wheel. I will show you how to create a gradated wash that goes from dark to light, however, you can paint it in with a solid color if you want. Enjoy!
Supplies
Watercolor Paint (red, yellow and blue)
Watercolor Paper
Watercolor Paintbrush (Round 6 or 10) Use what you have;)
Water
Paper Towel
Pencil and Eraser
*Optional Supplies - a plate to trace, and a ruler
How to divide a circle into 12 slices
• How to divide a circle...
*this may make you dizzy....this was filmed in the early days when my phone was recording while hanging from the ceiling. I am working on a new one
Extension Lessons
Make a color chart showing the difference between the secondary colors you mix and the pre-made colors in your set.
Create a watercolor painting using color combinations in the color wheel (Complimentary, Analogous, Monochromatic)
Create a color wheel that shows the color relationships that is not round

I’ve binge watched “colour theory” videos and this is by far, the best!! I painted along and I felt so happy knowing I created a colour wheel from just 3 colours!!🥰😂 Thank you!!

When I started painting I went out and got a lot of tubes of expensive paint but then I saw the vibrant results you get with a simple set. Thank you for the painting lessons but also for the common sense.

this was a very helpful video I started sketching a few months ago and went from badly drawn manga to well drawn realism and now I am looking to start adding in color, I thought learning how to mix the colors and get certain shades of color would have been difficult but now that i saw this video it makes perfect sense :)

It may be worth mentioning that it is impossible to mix a good, vibrant purple using this technique (that is, using your existing red and blue, which gives one a washed out, almost gray-ish purple). It would have saved me a bit of grief to have known this when I started out with watercolour. Just go ahead and buy a nice artist grade violet. Also, maybe mention what red, blue and yellow you are using here. Not all reds, blues and yellows are created equal. Always a good idea to go ahead and follow the color wheel up with a mixing chart. Good, clear tutorial, thank you.

I don't know how to explain it, but it seems easier in my ocd brain to mix the first blends as 50/50 of each primary, then adding more of the primary closest to the position on the color wheel to each other. Either way, it's a great fun learning project. The colors are amazing!

Thank you for this bare bones basic. I am in year 2 of art and got stencils round and grid for experimenting with mixing as much as to see the full potential of my paints and keep as a reference. I was a bit anxious starting, thinking I would mess it up, haha! Good video!

I'm doing a marathon of your videos. Love your Channel! several years ago I had a watercolor paint brush that I loved it had a large handle on it but more importantly it had a large head probably with an animal hair, it definitely wasn't synthetic. And I would say it was round. Because it had the pointy end. Anyhow, do you have a video about paint brushes that will tell me the sizes. I wonder if I could buy something meant for a classroom that would be cheaper but also larger. I remember as a kid using something very similar to the brush I adored. Thank you..

I have taught this lesson to 4 year olds and 80 year olds. You can adapt it for younger children by just painting a 6 color color wheel (just the primaries and the secondaries). A 12 year old should have no problem with this

I thought you were going to use the primary colors to make all the other colors; i.e red and blue to make to make purple, etc. For the newbie, I think that would have been more beneficial.
@justtheletterV274
@justtheletterV274 5 жыл бұрын
Aren’t Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow the primaries, I mean , people say it is , but they also say it’s only for printing and that you can mix magenta and cyan in paint. However, it is extremely hard and difficult to mix those and even if you did, it looks nothing like that in ink and along side with that, mixing a color with white or black is not counted as mixing with colors, even though they are colors. And.. you can actually mix red and blue, in PAINT! they are tertiaries not secondaries as many cmy users believe to be, that are made out of Cyan, Violet Blue (Blue) and Magenta, Orange Red (Red) . The Blue in RGB Light and CMY mixing is tainted with violet making it a secondary color , Violet Blue, either wise, it is just blue.. and when I saw a video showing the 3 color systems and said that blue looks violet due to imperfections, then how about this, at the end of the spectrum. The blue darkens and then fades, this will happen even with a background that isn’t black or dark grey. That darkening of the blue is not adding black but becoming closer to violet, however, on the color spectrum Purple/ Violet (they’re the same in CMYK because Violet Blue mixed with Magenta makes a color between) doesn’t exist, it is however , close to the violet blue at the end of the spectrum Jasper Geli don’t come @ me . I don’t want to cause another big conflict

Like other said or will say it is problematic to teach like they do it in school. Red, Blue and Yellow are not the main colors. Magenta, Cyan and Yellow are. And for yellow it would be best to be as neutral as possible. Red and Blue don't make violett. They produce really often grey.
@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio 7 жыл бұрын
Great point Erdhenne, color mixing is very theoretical. Colors in paint are much different than colors in printer ink. I have successfully made violet using red and blue with watercolor, acrylic and oil paint.
@Erdhenne
@Erdhenne 7 жыл бұрын
It's a really hard to wrap your mind around it. xD I don't get why PR176 (madder something) get's me a somewhat dull violett. But if I use PR108 (kadmium something) I get grey. No matter what. But if I use "reds" made with PV I get pretty colors. But PR122 always gets so intense purples. I gasp every time. But how? (If you plan on doing an in depth video about this topic or know a really good one please throw the link at me!) I mean neutrals are wonderful. But to start with watercolor I made the experience that it really is enough to start with Cyan/Cerulean blue, Magenta/Permanent Rose and a Aureolin or something in that direction. Maybe adding a neutral tint, indigo or sepia to get good dark colors. At least if you start as an adult. As a child I didn't care and just drew.
