Hey Qazi, that was a wonderful way of packing crucial information into one video. A big fan of your work. I do have a question for you. We are working on an indie movie aimed at film festivals and a limited theatre release. Budgets as you know for indie films are very limited. So is it safe to be in the DCI P3 space when color grading for movies that are gonna be released in theatres? By the way, we are grading on a MacBook Pro M1 which has a 1600 nits XDR screen. Please throw some light on this.

Hello! Wondering if at 9:30 there is a difference in the way the Contrast Ratio in the specs are presented. One is "Contrast Ratio" and the other one is "Dynamic Contrast Ratio" which is AFAIK :1000. Basically, they have the same contrast ratio. Please correct if I am wrong. Thanks!
@PascalVideography
@PascalVideography Жыл бұрын
1000:1 was supposed to be static contrast while 1000000:1 dynamic. Thats an unfair comparison. Dynamic means the blacks can be measured at the lowest brightness and whites measured at the highest brightness (this way is measured dynamic contrast). While static contrast is measured with blacks and whites at The same luminosity of the monitor. I hope this was helpfull.

Hi Waqas, I've been watching your videos for a while and they've helped me improve my work greatly. My question for you is this: my laptop screen can display 10-bit colors with 78% DCI-P3, but I have to switch on HDR in my display settings to do so. Most of the time, though, my work gets uploaded to social media or websites. Do I need to change my screen's color space to sRGB (from windows color management profiles) before grading footage that I intend to output in sRGB? The same goes for footage that I intend to output in Rec. 709; do I need to change my screen's color space to Rec. 709 before grading it?
@TallyLightProduction
@TallyLightProduction Жыл бұрын
it not a bad idea but remember the room itself and darkness you are in are part of the standard so if you have a window open with light though it then one day the lights off and its night, the screens representation and your eyes perception of such are also affected. so try to standardize your room to be dimly lit with grey walls (if you can) most of us can't really have a proper to spec Grading room so its not that big of a deal but it can not hurt to be using the right monitor output such as rec 709 vs AdobeRGB ect.
@indraneiltomar9318
@indraneiltomar9318 Жыл бұрын
@@TallyLightProduction Could you help me clarify my understanding of color spaces and display settings for video grading? Specifically, if we work with colors in any software, should we be working in the same color space as our intended output? Even if our display is capable of a higher output, should we bring it down to the same color space as the intended output? For example, if I have a professional-grade monitor that can output in multiple color spaces like sRGB, AdobeRGB, DCI-P3, and Rec709, and it is HDR10 compliant and can output in both 8 and 10 bits, should I still set my monitor to Rec709 if my output is intended to be in Rec709? Or can I grade my footage in a higher color space like DCI-P3 at 10 Bit and output it in a smaller color space like Rec709 in 8 bit?
@alphaomega9255
@alphaomega9255 Жыл бұрын
@@indraneiltomar9318 imo if the output was 8bit rec 709, I’d at the very least review my work in that spec because pushing colors/ tonality in 10BIT p3 allows much more latitude then 8bit 709 so I’d want to make sure my final project would look good for the intended viewers who don’t have professional monitors. I’d probably work (edit) in the larger color spaces then near final review set my monitor to rec 709 and make sure the work looks good as well,…because looking great for us with fancy equipment is cool but we really want the work to look really good for the general public who mostly watches in rec 709. ** this is my opinion and I am not sure what the professional colorist would recommend** but it just makes sense to view the grade as my intended viewers would. Similar to HDR, if the viewers are using only HDR then we need to also view in HDR and not Rec709. I’d say it’s true for both better or worse quality, that we should at least review in the final intended specification. Now as to doing the entire edit in that spec, I’m really not sure as that would mean for 95% of the work people do they would not even need those color spaces and monitors but I could see where working in p3 10BIT then going to 8bit 709 might cause issues with highlights/ shadows and color separation which is why I think many professionals have several monitors often with one set to base spec (709) to review their work as public viewers would be but also have a monitor that allows higher end specs for grading as needed.

I think DELL and BenQ also have some nice professional monitor, also with high resolution, and it's usually around $500+ It's a reasonable price and suitable for basic color grading (Vlogger or for small company). The deficiencies of these displays and the professional displays of Eizo are more in 3D luts, color space conversion and built-in color calibrators.
