As a teen working in the TV shop in early 70's, I was able to take home a console RCA roundie that had a F-K short in the pic tube. I added an isolation xformer & used that TV for a few years. The almost earth-tone warmth of those early roundie CRT's was just wonderful. I think it was something like a CT16 chassis. Freakin' MASSIVE!

Every time I watch a color television set up it occurs to me how amazing the color mask manufacturing engineering. The alignment of holes to the dots. The directing of electron beams through micro holes and hitting correct color. It's all highly advanced physics yet it was honed to perfection and mass produced in the millions.
@skuula

Afaik, the phosphors were applied through the installed mask.
@directcurrent5751

@@skuula That sounds sensible. I'm persuadable. But just making the mask, such precision required, and the additional behavior considerations, such as conductivity, condensation, etc. Three separate CRTs had to be an attractive option. Much less engineering and almost no new manufacturing challenges.

@@skuulaI don't know for sure, but i don't think so. There was a video from RCA where they talk about silk screening the phosphor dots. I think...

@skuula Close; using a photographic process. It goes something like this: Apply phosphor to screen in a slurry, let it set, apply photosensitive resist, install mask, expose using light source ("lighthouse") where electron gun would normally live for that colour. Remove mask. Rince phosphor and repeat for other two colours.

I haven't seen a color TV alignment like this since I was a kid and my grandfather adjusted all the convergence and color guns on an ailing RCA 25 incher with chassis CTC-38 way back in 1971. My dad got it almost for free but didn't know how to fix the color. We watched it in black and white for a few days until grandpa got a hold of how to align everything with the RCA service manual. He did pretty good for a guy who was colorblind and never told any of us of that condition. We watched that old set for many years until the flyback gave out. It ate 6GH8 tubes until grandpa changed a coil in it on advice from another TV repairman fellow that he knew.

Today we do something to TVs and other displays called "calibration". Trying to explain calibration to the average person, for me anyway, has largely been an exercise in humility. I try to explain that calibrating the TV settings simply means setting the basic controls(contrast, brightness, color, etc) so that a test pattern appears a certain way, and do grayscale adjustment, so that content appears over the TV as the director or producers intended it to. But most just look at me glazed over, or go "I don't care, as long as there's a picture".

As a teen, I worked to an independent servicer in North Jersey and learned how to set up color tv's of that era (Early 70's). I loved doing it as each TV had its own idiosyncrasies that made it a challenge nearly every time. I lost interest in repairing TV's in the mid-70's and moved on to audio, so I never made it to converging the Color Tv's that had you attaching magnets to the CRT to correct for the CRT's artifacts.

The crepe erase as personal lube thing nearly killed me. Seeing a CRT TV working even through my HD LCD TV brings back memories. Television was simply the best on those old CRT TVs. It's probably because they actually believed in good writing when CRT TVs were in use rather than shoving out politically tuned garbage. Just things I miss that will never come back again from a moment in time long past. I don't watch TV anymore except for severe weather reports.

Converging a TV in the dark, Shango66's voice, nighttime birds singing, a fly beating its wings from the left across to the right, in the distance an am-blance sounds, and strange lights emanating from the screen with the occasional crack of a leaky EHT lead - the soundscape is brilliant. Very reminiscent of a Pink Floyd concert man - keep up the great work.

I love the nostalgia i feel when i see TVs on this site and the date "1966", and i fondly remember what was available on TV for children like me back then. As of 1966, it would be another ten years before my dad would bring home a color TV to the house. We only had B&Ws to that date. That "modern marvel" was a boxey, faux-woodgrained 19 inch non-remote control Magnavox tabletop, utilizing a fixed, roof antenna for reception from NYC 60 miles away as the crow flies. The TV nestled on a nice roll-around TV cart. It was also the only TV in the house.

1:26:53 That is PVC insulation on those wires chemically breaking down, which converts the copper to green slime. Those wires all need to be replaced, because it will damage components and the board itself. It also might be conductive at high voltages.

@@godfreypoon5148 Yes, the slime is the plasicizer, but that is supposed to be transparent. The green color comes from copper corrosion, caused either by the plasicizer itself, or by some byproduct of the chemical breakdown. I used to enjoy getting the purity and convergence just right in the 80's and 90's, I thought it was relaxing, until Sony came out with the 36" and the 40" CRT's in the early 2000's. You had to stick so many button and tape magnets under the yoke to make it perfect. The larger sets had coils to determine the angle of the set and automatically apply a bias to the purity.

I've got a couple of CRT TVs in the basement. An Admiral 19in B&W from 1965 and a Philco-Ford 25in color from the late 70s or early 80s. I remember watching the Philco when I was a kid, it had a beautiful color picture. I remember how visitors would comment on how nice the picture looked. I'd like to get both working but both have dead tubes and the chance of finding a working tube for either is slim to none. I'm thinking of gutting both and installing flat panels in the cabinets.

I used to work on tv sets, I have found that a front to back motion with a deguasser and then a quick forceful pull back of the deguasser always got the screen pure. Of course, this has to be done several times. And you watch for purity. And of course, several other motions. But a quick pull back always gave me the best purity. And I would always try to get a red screen. A well degaussed Red Screen with cause everything else to have good purity. Convergence comes after that. For stubborn purity problems, I would use a speaker magnet, in the same motions... constant front to back motion until all impurities were removed.

Any time you deal with removing a frosted glass cataract when you put it back together, you get a somewhat blurred image, your image is never crystal clear, it's the air gap. It's even more noticeable when you get the safety glass that is frosted and Tinted as it throws the colors off as well.

It always amazes me to see just how good even a cheap CRT television can look. It may not be High Definition, but the picture quality still beats a lot of LCD TV's. Given how long this tube was sitting unused, it might be waking up as it runs. I have heard rumours tubes and CRT's need a break in period, but never actually heard anything official. It could also be some caps waking up making the set improve :)

The second chassis looks so much better. The softness is most likely from the air gap between both glasses, also, the front glass looks slightly frosted, even with the set turned off you can tell there is some fuzzyness going on. Maybe a solution would be filling up the gap with some clear epoxy perhaps?

Serviced a lot of the early (DO-3, DO-5) Sylvania chassis. That's probably the best you''ll get the color on these. The color sync tended to drift (rainbows). Make sure the resistors on the horizontal oscillator tube are in spec. If the horizontal drive waveform is too narrow it will cause excessive cathode current on the HOT; check that current. I remember the HOT is a 42KN6 or on a transformer chassis, 6KN6. There may be a horizontal efficiency coil to set the current.

A very interesting and entertaining hour and a half plus on a Sunday evening. PS, Trump or RFK ? Either must be better than the status quo.

I wonder how long it took at the factory to set up these adjustments. I'm sure with all new components, it was much easier. Thanks for the tutorial, Shango!

After ( and when , or if???) the NOS Packard Bell set taps out for good, you should do the same run time counter experiment with this set.

Could that cooked vacuum bulb have anything to do with the softness? I thought you said it was the horizontal driver, but ya never know, hence me asking..

Those Crepe Erase infomercials are a hoot. I love it when you ridicule them, don't stop. There are much better, and cheaper, products out there for this purpose.

Temporary fix for hv arcing, try blu tac, Works a treat. When I was taught to set up Delta gun tubes back in 1980, I was told you must set up picture geometry first, as this does affect dynamic convergence.... Your vertical linearity could do with a bit of tweaking.....

Yes, first set up high voltage, than geometry, than convergence. But I think that this vertical linearity issue is minor deflection problem that dont affect convergence too much.
