COLOR THEORY basics FOR FASHION | Justine Leconte

Understanding color theory (1st part) and how to apply color theory in fashion (2nd part).
This advice applies when you design a collection, but also when you simply pick an outfit in the morning.
Terms used:
Primary, secondary, tertiary colors
Hue + white = tint
Hue + black = shade
Hue + grey = tone
Monochromatic: stays within one hue
Analogous: takes colors close to each other on the color wheel
Complementary colors: one color + its opposite on the wheel
Triad: any 3 colors evenly spaced on the wheel
Split-complement: one color + the 2 left and right next to its opposite
Tetrad: 4 colors made of 2 complementary pairs
Square: a tetrad where the pairs are evenly spaced

I find that choosing a neutral version of one of the complementary colours also works and improves the visual effect, such as camel paired with blue or olive paired with red.

great idea- neutrals can have so many different undertones, even if you have all black clothes I am sure you have seen blacks that don't go with eachother because one has a blue undertone and another has a greenish undertone, etc. This is why there are 100 shades of white at a paint store- undertones!

lestrange Yeah, the undertones of colors are deceptive... Like a bluish red for instance, does it really go as well with a yellowish green as it does with a blueish green??

I think cool skin undertones can carry warm colours too, wear the cooler shades of the warm colour. Correct. Like pantone chart.

I was aleays taught in art class and from my mom who's a graphic designer that you're meant to use complimentary colors to bring a certain color out or make them "pop". Like for example in art if we painted a blue sky we would color orange underneath it to make he blue seem more vibrant, or even Justine's lipstick is an example, where the light green in her eyes is an lifted from the red-violet kind of lip color, since those are complimentary colors. Maybe it's just a proportions, like use one less to bring out the other main color so they don't compete for attention? Idk I was just confused because she didn't mention that and that was like the one thing I retained when taught about color.

She is talking to about the mix of colors as regards fashion, not graphic designing or other types of art.

Fashion is different than design. You could do orange shadows with blue lips or blue Shadow with oranges but it's much more punk and won't be harmonious. Contrast can also be difficult in design. Think Myspace pages or old websites with the red/otand background and blue text. Definitely a NO in design

@@enricoshanerobertson1963 I recently read about this, and I found out that, you can actually mix complementary colors together, but the proportion is highly important, else, your outfit might make too much noise...You can even decide to make one a touch of the other, then it makes your outfit Pop...Justine, maybe you can clear our doubts on this too

Also I see in her videos she says that you should stick to colours that suits your undertone but I have see that alot of people wearing athleisure wear is doing the different variations of neon green and it suits everybody , from light skin to dark skin

Love this topic! One of my fav color pairs is actually a complimentary but its very classy and subdued. Its palest aqua with a small burst of red orange. They are directly opposite each other but one is very tinted while the other is full saturation. I love this mostly for home fashions as i dress a lot in black. Example to follow.

Great simple & precise description of what monochromatic is. I hear this term tossed around often on many of the makeup channels & hearing you describe/confirm its definition here, I realize that many didn't really know what monochromatic is & probably through no fault of their own. It seems like it was just assumed to be something else & many just followed suit assuming that the information was correct. Thanks!!

amazing video! I do have colour wheel and im starting some clothing projects for myself. i realized that i do love cool colors since i watched your channel and really avoided unnecessary purchases from the store because i know that i dont really wear a specific color.
