how the hell are you an art student without getting color theory? What kind of institution you studying at? It was the first bloody thing I did in art school, endlessly mixing colors until I could produce perfect gradients on command. I still get frustrated when thinkin about it but it's such an elementary skill that I'm happy they forced us to do it.

Sometimes I get strong desires to paint just out of nowhere, its like i have to. These moments connects me so much to the basis of human nature that time sometimes sieze to exist and 5 hours feels like 30 minutes. Does anyone else have such feelings? It may be a part of expressing something very complex in a yet simple way, however i do not share these emotions with alot of people i meet and that fact somehow scares me.

+Handful of Sand I thought I was the only one feeling this. I feel like I am finally connected to myself and that painting is the only way for me to relax and forget about time. I always get from people who do not paint at all "when you paint you must think a lot about what's going on in your life or whatever, don't you?" Well, I don't; and it's freaking me out. Like, I do not think for 6 hours in a row. It's hard to explain, indeed, but I have no words to express this feeling and people do not usually understand how painting is important to my life. It became an addiction. I really wanted to comment back because it's really what I feel when I have the urge to paint and when I paint. I thought I was alone. (sorry for my bad english) And very very good video btw!!

I don’t have some hungry urge to do anything but I only loose track of time when I sculpt. It’s weird, especially if you have an endless playlist of synth wave music, 30 minutes feels like 3 hours, but fun, it’s like a drug. I’m guessing it has something to do with heart rate, cuz when I work out I get the opposite effect.

Thus is one of the most valuable videos I've ever seen on painting for self-taught artusts, because I didn't previously understand what a study was and what they might be for and why t do more than one- as well your 'closed palette technique' is so good to know. This is the video I've been looking for for years. Very clearly explained. Easy to follow, without being overly simplistic or condescending. And the presenter doesn't feel the need to be all perky and annoying like 90% of these other art videos. Just straightforward, to the point. You know this guy loves painting because the video is all about painting rather than the painter.

Thank you, for showing how to mix the colors regarding the lights and shadows. I was always told not to add black. You showed how to do that and to start with the dark's first. I definitely learned a lot.
@FlorentFargesarts
@FlorentFargesarts 8 жыл бұрын
Black is subject to debate. The only thing to know about it, is that it is actually a blueish color. A very very dark blue so to say. So if you add black, you make the mix darker but also more blue. If you know that, it can easily be balanced by adding more orange (like burnt sienna). But I prefer adding burnt umber to my skin tone mixes instead of black , so that I don't have to compensate this effect all the time.

For artists starting out: Skin is translucent, this means that light passes through it (and absorbs it). It can have all kinds of hues depending completely on the lighting situation. Therefore it's tricky to say THIS is how you make a skin tone, it's only true for the scene the author is painting now. It's not set in stone, and actually creatively limiting if you start thinking this way. Once you understand very well how value and light actually work you can literally interpret your subject/scene any way/color you want or see it. Not hating, this video is very informative nonetheless!
