Colorado's DeWeese Reservoir Trout Fishing

DeWeese Reservoir is a better than average place to trout fish for residents of Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Canon City and the surrounding communities. This heavily planted, 300- acre, Rocky Mountain reservoir rests at 7,800 feet in a stunning setting of Southern Colorado and boasts a heavily stocked trout fishery. In fact, we didn’t catch a rainbow smaller than 12 inches while filming this edition of Pautzke Outdoors.
In a few short hours we ended up hooking roughly a dozen trout, most of which were caught on Gold Label and Silver Label salmon eggs and Feed Pellet Brown, Garlic Salmon Egg and Chartreuse Garlic FireBait.A few of our setups consisted of South Bend size 10 trout rigs fished with a Gold Label on one hook and Silver Label on the other. In addition we employed sliding sinker rigs, using a ¼ ounce Water Gremlin egg sinker with a No. 8 Gamakatsu Baitholder hook. Molding the FireBait around the baitholder brought consistent action when casting onto the edge of the channel the skirts down the middle of the reservoir.

Quick tip, even though this is really late, the small mouth bass in that lake get very large, and the wimpy stockers are no match for the naturally reproducing smallies! Use medium to large (3-11 inch) streamer patterns like rabbit zonkers, slump busters, and wooly buggers all work well. fish around the rocks at the dam, and you are sure to get a 7 pounder FAST. And remember, all of this information is coming from a Dweese lake native, and experienced (though still young) fly fisherman. Also remember to PLEASE try and go barbless, or at lease crimp the barbs on any flies and hooks. Good luck!

I like watching this video I go fishing there all the time. Now I am thinking of trying to buy some Pautzke's Fire bait and some Balls o fire salmon eggs.

Last time I went fishing, I had bought Balls o fire salmon eggs Silver label and fire bait garlic salmon egg and got a few really nice hits, they took the hook and bait and spit the hook back out, but I was a little to slow hadn't been fishing since I was about 7 and I am 15 now so it took me little while to react to the hit. All in all my parents and I did end up catching some rainbows.

Pautzke Bait watched your videos took some gold labels down to the Boise river four days in a row with gold label first cast fish on! Caught close to a 100 trout in four days love your product. Come down to boise and I will take you to some killer spots. Two weeks ago caught a 24 inch bow. We have browns that go 30 plus inches

Camped there with geological crew early 1970s...I remember the Red Garter Cafe ...good food and cute waitresses...Westcliffe.

not high mountain trout not even past 8,000 ft at lake deWeese and in the bottom of the wet mountain valley. And also most the rainbows in the lake are stocked, Most the trout in the sangres are cutthroat with the occasion of a brown or brooke in the alpine lakes Written by a westcliffe native

Another place in Colorado is cotton wood cove south west Colorado, they have cabins or campgrounds it's on the upper Rio grande. It might be the best fishing for big trout in Colorado. Three fish there might fill up a good size cooler. In cotton wood cove we were putting back 18-22 inch fish and bigger.

I have fished Deweese a lot nice place. If you want some bigger fish to the west of were you where there is a lake in the mountains called Hermit lake but it takes a 4 wheel drive its beautiful lake. But it takes a good little drive to get there. And rainbow lake is not to far away from the place you are now. There is a few lakes around that area.
