It's not impossible tho, just start by learning the structure, if you just move your right hand without having to think then all you have to practice is the picking, which is hard but you can always simplify it (I usually play the riff as it should be played but downpicking instead of alternate)

I mean I can the play the major riff on my guitar, for maybe 30 seconds, before my wrist and forearm give out entirely, and that's without even cross-picking every individual note. Now, coming from a guy who came up with the lead-guitar intro, chorus, bridge, and outro for "under the bridge" at 19 years old, I suppose I shouldn't be all that surprised that john can play it continuously.. for 4 minutes.. while singing...but still; simply awe-inspiring talent

For everyone who insists Josh's version doesn't sound as good.... well no shit. John wrote the music for this song. So clearly he is going to play it better than anyone else. He's also one of the best guitar players of the modern era so there's that too. But Josh is pretty fucking good in his own right. His style is more minimal and he is less aggressive but he is damn good and I've seen him live so I have proof. He can definitely play. He is friends with John for a reason....

It’s all very simple stuff - I know this riff is doing the rounds on the nets as some challenge and it’s a very dexterity based lick but like I say, he plays very simple stuff, his solos are very good mind but his real talent is his sense of tone - especially his clean playing, it has that lovely crunchy, brittle almost ‘about to break’ sound to his clean playing and I really like that! It’s very bluesy too and percussive, I think that’s why other guitar players rate him cos his chops are really together and it’s all feel! Then he stomps on the overdrive and gives it what for but it’s his rhythm playing for me where he really comes into his own, again he’s not afraid to have let guitar make its own noise and doesn’t try or play too clean, he’s pretty good!!

The problem with this particular riff is that it gives you hope, in the starting of learning it you feel like its not that hard and with some practice you'll get it down, and you do get it down but not at full tempo, you think I"ll practice slowly and then increase tempo but boom you play 4 bars and your hand hurts and cramps. This riff is harder than other riffs because it gives you hope unlike other songs which you know are hard ( like every dragonforce song ever) But I'll learn it frusciante, you just wait, I'll learn it alright.

Ok but like John is literally. Jesus Christ omg I don’t understand how he can play like that. Sometimes they do this song at faster tempo live

Damn I’ve been playing for a long time and I can play the riff pretty well but the tempo is damn fast is hard. John is on another level to sing at the same time and not looking at the guitar.

my mistake was using my pinky finger to do de hammers and pulls insted of the ring finger like john and eveeryone else

only frusciante plays that riff that way

@kiki the gerbil Josh plays it in his own way. Different from John, different from anyone else that can play it. That's the cool thing about guitar, it's such a personal instrument, it's sound is unique to everyone that plays it.

That riff is such a wrist destroyer, so much fun to play when you nail it tough!
@SUPERSCUMDK4 жыл бұрын
what the flip... That riff is so sweet! I'm getting more and more psyched about John being back in RHCP!

The left-right hand coordination is so outrageously amazing on that riff. John sings and doing that riff without looking on the fretboard. No looper. Jist pure skills. I admit it is no fun playing this riff for me. I fuck up those notes every now and then because of my picking technique. And this is live. The tempo is subjective every live they play this song than the studio album. What a god you are mr fruciante.

This riff is really difficult but fantastically hypnotic. Practise and more practise! Alternate picking is absolutely essential plus a very RELAXED wrist action. I use a flexible, light pick for more intimate string contact. Cheat by always staying on the 4th fret for all the syncopated arpeggios🤫. If the wrist is not relaxed it will tense up giving painful muscle cramp.Demanding? Yes but doable.

Frusciante with a Keith Richardesque haunting riff with lovely backing vocals and epic hair even Jesus Christ would be envious of. Flea just mugs the bass line and Chads shuffling rythum & of course Keides just makes love to the mic. RHCP at its finest
