What is color blindness?
Approximately 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have some degree of color blindness. There are different types of color blindness but the most common is commonly known as red-green color blindness.
Color blindness (also called color vision deficiency by vision scientists), is a condition where a the retinal cone cells respond to light differently than normal. People with color blindness usually can still see colors, but have color confusions or certain pairs of colors which appear so similar they cannot tell them apart. There are extremely rare cases where people are unable to see any colour at all.
What EnChroma glasses do?
EnChroma glasses are an optical assistive device; they are not a cure for color blindness. The underlying cause of most color vision deficiencies is that the red and green-sensitive retinal cone cells have an overlapping response to light. Instead of responding separately to each wavelength of light, their response is highly similar. To compensate for the overlap, the EnChroma lens contains proprietary optical materials that selectively remove particular wavelengths of light exactly where the overlap is occurring.

Purple is a common problem color with color blindness because it contains red and blue - common types of color blindness. So if the person is deficient in either color, purple doesn't look purple. If blue deficient it appears more a muddy red, if red deficient then it appears dull blue. I always love how they fall in love with the color purple, one guy said it best - "I can see why purple is considered the royal color!" Because they have never seen that color in any variation before.

Unfortunately, these glasses do not actually allow these people to see the colors they're blind to. It's just like a phone app photo filter, but makes the colors they can't see more distinguishable. Unfortunately, these glasses are hyped up way beyond what they do in reality.

@@omsmada "hyped way beyond what they do in reality" yeah, tell that to those people who cried just by using them. We know these don't cure color blindness, but it's something for those people. But- he..... he left me not even 4 weeks later, he got hit by a car and I never got to see him again- 4 weeks after his first ever time seeing how beautiful the world is in colour.... and after he left me, his family told me he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend. I am colorblind so I can explain. We as colorblind people it doesn't means that we see just black and white. What you call purple is also purple for us but we see it in a different tone. When we confuse colors what happens is that those 2 colors we see them in a very similar tonality so we get to confuse them. In general he knows all the colors but now with the glasses he could distinguish them.

@@XenoDrake Colorblindness is a sex-linked recessive trait, this means that it is carried on the X chromosome and not the Y chromosome. The reason for this is because the X chromosome carries a lot more DNA than the Y so males get a lot of their traits from their mother while their father only supplies the coding to become male and some other traits. So a female with XX can have the colorblindness trait on one X and still see color since the other X will override the recessive x. Males on the other hand only have a single X, so whatever is displayed by the X whether colorblindness or not, the male will display that trait, since there is nothing from the Y chromosome to override the recessive x. This is reason why a lot of hereditary diseases are displayed more often in males than females. Another example of this is hemophilia, which is the inability to clot blood.
