Art is a skill and as with learning any skill, it takes time and commitment. If you start by drawing simple things and put the time in, then you will be “that good.” The biggest problem I see from beginners is they try to run before they can walk by doing complex pieces right away and then get frustrated when they are not producing masterpieces. Then they give up. Start simple. Get a sketchbook and draw something like an apple and study how the light hits it and where the shadows are. Draw simple things in your sketchbook and then, after a month of that, redraw the first item you drew (such as an apple) and you will see improvement. It takes time.

Hi Linda, most often I do start with the oil based pencils first, but later on I will just use them interchangeably with the wax based pencils. 🙂

BMJ Art thanks! You know it really doesn't do that (eat up the pencils) with colored pencils. Primarily because this paper has a very smooth tooth.

Thank you for the question, @rtb03791 Before applying solvent on pastelmat, you need to have enough coverage to actually move the colored pencil. So I like to have at least 2 to 3 layers first. But, it is possible to use solvent even with a light layer of pencil on this surface. :)

Hi Michelle, thank you! In my experience Luxarchival creates slightly more dust, or fall off, than Pastelmat. But Luxarchival is also far better at holding the pencil pigment than any other sand paper I’ve used. I hope that helps! :)
