DIY Smartphone Projector - How To Make Your Phone Image 15 Times Bigger (Tutorial)

My easy tutorial of how to make smartphone projector allows you to increase your phone image up to 15 times more! It means that you can get an image about 60 inch! For this DIY Smartphone Projector (that will REALLY WORK!) you will need: 2 shoe boxes (2! not 1!), magnifying glass (I used cheap magnifying glass which diameter was 75 mm), electrical or black duct tape, scissors and knife, black paint, a pencil and a ruler, smartphone (or even PAPER PHOTOS!).
First step is to connect 2 shoe boxes. Mine were 33 cm each. So I've got 66 cm projector. You can take 1 large box (60 cm), but it should be narrow. How to connect boxes - watch in my video tutorial.
Next step - is to cut off a hole for magnifying glass.
Next - to cover all holes in boxes to make the light pass through the magnifying glass ONLY!
Then paint inside of your boxes black! I used watercolor, but you can use gouache, spray paint, just glue inside part of boxes with matte black paper - whatever!
You'll need a smartphone holder, so I made one out of a plastic bottle bottom (watch in my video tutorial).
Set the holder to the inside back part of the first box (that one which is without magnifying glass). Put your phone to the holder (screen should be turned to the magnifying glass).
Important! Phone settings! Turn phone screen brightness to the maximum. Turn off screen rotation. Flip your phone upside down (so ppl in video or photo will be turned - their feet will be up, and their heads will be down).
About focus and distance: tune the focus with moving your smartphone (with holder) backwards and forwards in the first box. Here are few tips about distance:
1. Distance from phone to magnifying glass - 60 cm, Distance from magnifying glass to the wall - 1 m, image size - ~8 inch
2. Distance from phone to magnifying glass - 50 cm, Distance from magnifying glass to the wall - 1.5 m, image size - ~15 inch
3. Distance from phone to magnifying glass - 40 cm, Distance from magnifying glass to the wall - 5 m, image size - ~60 inch
So, turn off light in your room and start the movie! :)
You can also project paper photos! Use a flashlight for this. Watch in my video tutorial how to set it right.

I am extremely impressed! This worked amazing, just not with very high quality - but certainly very clear. I made my projector size over 20 times bigger than my phone size! I would also suggest that if you are using this for karaoke, it isn't the best as the words come out backwards. TIP: to make the projector as big as you like, make more distance between the wall and the projector! Also, if you have a well sealed box, don't worry about adding tape or paint to the insides because it worked for me just fine! Hope this helped everyone who wasn't sure if it would work!

You know why this worked better than 99% of the other smartphone projectors? Because she painted the inside black. I made a homemade projector in the early 2000's, before smartphones existed, using an old CRT monitor. Every tutorial I read (there wasn't KZfaq then!) told me to paint the inside black, because any other color will reflect light, and light reflection will reduce the quality of the picture. These other smartphone projector videos you see on here, the person making it doesn't paint the inside black and then complains it sucks! Research people, Research.

And upended :/ .. upside down I still have the box on the top of the cheuveniera in my grandparents' house.. for some reason.. i cut and assembled it.. it was nice and warm to see the projected photo at night

To adjust the distance to the wall or the phone, also the size of the image, you can calculate like this: Distance from the glass to the wall / distance from the magnifying glass to the phone = the size of the picture on the wall / the size of your phone (use inch) Hmm it's not always accurate 100% due to some other small effects, but almost right. +Carrwn Lenore on the projector* and using a stronger lens would also mean using a different setting of measurements for the projector. you could try using different settings to make the image better.

+Carrwn Lenore The problem with this thing is that the brightness of the smartphone screen is limited and the brightness of the wall image decreases as the size increases. So you can get a lot larger image but the brightness will be so low that it will be barely visible in a complete darkness. It's pointless even as seen in the video. That's why we are using a projectors.

@@Dg55345 it only works for certain types of magnifying glasses. I have two magnifying lenses, one has a lower focal length while one has a higher focal length. The higher one is the only one that worked for me.

@@aria-lw1lq well it works but for me i had to make to room 100% dark and also i downloaded an app and i put the video sharpness to 50% and brightness to 200% because otherwise it wasn't bright enough. And also i put it on a white smooth surface. I watched a couple episodes from tv shows but movies i don't it will be great because they are usually darker. Also you have to adjust it just enough because sometime you can go crazy knowing you can do a little better but you usually mess it up. So if you do this. Just adjust it and then don't touchit

OK on most smartphones locking the auto-rotate only locks in portrait mode ( not very useful ) this could be solved by putting a mirror in the box angled at 45degrees cutting a screen size hole in the top of the box , for focus don't tape the two boxes together but let the small box slide in and out of the bigger one to focus

This idea is really great! It’s so cool! But unfortunately when we tried it it was really really small, the image, and it was really blurry. We even tried to use the measurements but the DIY still didn’t work. Great idea though!

Very cool video :) I just have couple of questions regarding the set up. 1) If I want to use my 7" Tab, which Lens should I prefer - 4 Inch with 2.25X OR 3 Inch with 5X ? 2) Also, what should be the ideal Distance from Tab to magnifying glass to get 40" (or so) projection...is there any formula? My 10 year old daughter built 2 during this winter vacation. She enjoyed making it and was stoked when she focused and saw movie on the wall. That's what really matters, not these other comments that it's video and sound are low quality. she used regular shoe box and round magnifying glass, other she used smaller rectangle boxes with rectangle magnifying glass and she cut off the handle. By the way, she didn't paint the inside of the box, it's lined with white foam. Quote of the day "Never take advice from anyone that hasn't done anything"

A bit complicated but a sweet Idea. Might not be the best thing though. Use any app which can transfer your laptop's screen on the cellphone. Use wifi direct so that The least amount of lag is present. Flip it and put inside the projector. Then Use your laptop to play a game or something.. Probably nothing which requires precise controls.. Play something like.. erm.. ah.. Okay something like battleblock theater. Any 2d game or a less Accuracy hungry game ( Probably not a racing game) And you can enjoy a projector which not only is capable of projecting your phone but your pc too. Cheers. (P.s already done it)

If the magnifying glass is 2m away from a wall your phone should be 1m away from the glass. So if u have a big phone (I did it with a small one) u should just go farther. Am I right?

+Royal Lim projectors use light to transfer the image onto the screen, lesser the lighting where you are viewing, better the picture.

I'll give you an advice for really cool image improving. Use retroreflective cloth or film for screen. Your eyes should be as near to lens as possible. Because all light reflects back to source with minimal spread. I have such screen for real projector. I'll try to make such projector with phone for fun, then I'll make a video.

So glad i did this..my bedroom is 8x10 i created a five feet tall shelf, and it projects a 60" on the opposite wall, display from samsung tablet 3, 7". and on my fire phone about 48" display. ( really dark room works bestl) This comes in handy during power outage so i watch movies i downloaded. i live in the Bahamas, so this was like a godsend, only wish i could make it a little brighter, but i guess it would be too awesome lol. Why did you make the box so large ? I want to do this I have a camera from the 1950's it opens in the back and you can see directly down the pop out accordion like focal lens. I am not using it for anything else its probably worth money but I want to mount that (of course in a way I can just remove it without damaging) and see if I can use it in place of the magnifying glass. This way I can keep a smaller form factor and will be able to adjust the distance of the phone or device and also adjust the lens for a crispy picture, and well it will look really cool . I liked how you painted the inside of the box Black no one else is doing that and it definitely makes a significant difference. Good Job

For better results you may use a primary lens and at its focal distance add a bigger size Fresnel lens and the room has to be really pitch dark, otherwise it's nonsense. At 5 m from the wall older people needed at least a 150 Watt bulb to project the pic on the wall. Thank you anyway for sharing.

Yes we can make 60 inches display but it will be with less brightness which I don't like. I have done work on it and took it to a step ahead, where it work in day and also then where windows and doors be open

+ag123fantasy no. that would flip the image up. you can't really stop it from horizontal flipping as the light refracts off the magnifying glass a certain way. mabye if you where to use two infront of each other? im not entirely sure.
