What are the best watercolor pencils? And what are the worst? Watch as Steve and I run the "Battle of the Watercolor Pencils" where we test 26 different brands to see who comes out on top!
Our goal in doing this watercolor pencil testing was to find the best watercolor pencils for Colorists (NOT necessarily for Watercolorists.) This is an important distinction because what is important to a Watercolorist may not be important to a Colorist and visa-versa.
For example, we not only wanted to know how each of these watercolor products performed when wet, but also how they performed dry-similar to how one might use them in a coloring book.
HOW IT WORKS
• First, we purchased several popular brands of watercolor pencils including Faber-Castell, Caran d'Ache, Arteza, Prismacolor and more!
• Then we swatched all of the pencils in one of our watercolor swatch books (over 800 swatches total!)
www.coloringbliss.com/product...
• Next we created a watercolor pencil testing worksheet upon which we tested and scored all 26 brands.
www.coloringbliss.com/waterco...
• Finally, we tallied all of the scores to come up with the best and worst watercolor pencils.

I came here to look for a new brand of watercolor pencils I had Staedtler Karat Aquarell for many years I did not use them to color but in watercolor painting when needed a fine line or fine details. Lately I wanted to use them in coloring books or printed paper ( I bought the cardstock you recommended a long time ago ) I can use the w/c pencils on inkjet as long as it is not freshly printed. I found the pencils a bit scratchy and thought that Arteza would be better. After all your work and thanks for it, I decided that I will stick to the Karat because I can not afford the Albrecht Durer, and, if I want to w/c I will use my w/c in tube or tub, Than you, you saved me some money. These days money is a rare fantasy.

I'm here for the second time. The first time was when the video came out just of curiosity and now because I have seen some videos more to how to use watercolor pencil. Watercolor pencils have always been a little bit of mystery and confusing to me but after I have see some videos of "In the studio with Michele Webber" I think I ready to go for it. Maybe. Just have to decide witch brand I should buy. I have some watercolor pencils from "of brand", some old Faber-Castell studio grade and what Scrawlr Box have send to me that last year. I don't remember with brand came i first place I this video so I will watch again. And I think must see what the difference are among all Faber-Castell's brand. (Magnus I know.)

I have 36 Albretcht Dürer and yeah, they really worth it. And they are usually twice, three times cheaper than Caran D’ache ones. Really love them and absolutely recommend, even if you don’t know how to use water techniques on coloring properly, because they color perfectly without it too. Just way too stunning.

Thank you so much for this amazing swatch-off! I was so excited to see such a thorough comparison of the "top" watercolor pencils as I have a couple of different brands in my Jacksons's shopping cart (who else always has an art cart (or several) at a store online filled with goodies!?) and was hoping to click the buy button once I found out which was the winner! Thank you again for all your efforts, I really appreciate all the testing, research, and info :)

What an amazing, impressive video. I love the attention to detail and amount of research you and Steve put into it! I really appreciate the time you put in, to collect all the materials (including the paper!), measure different standards, and give such an in-depth analysis on each set. It's rare to find such a well-done video, measuring them the same way I would. So thank you for sharing all of this, I loved your video! Your passion for coloring and consideration for others' styles really shows! Also... I own the Derwent Inktense 24 set, so I was really proud to see them up there in the top, lol!

I normally use Inktense as my drawing layer of my watercolor paintings. I use Sepia Ink but I find that if I fully activate the drawing part and let it dry, it’s permanent and don’t lift. Based on your preference for the Magnus, you might want to check out the Inktense blocks, which come in small and large. The white Inktense block is way more opaque than the pencil version. It’s worth having for corrections and highlights. If it’s properly activated, you can paint right over the top. One thing notable about the Caran D’Ache is that all of the pigment dissolves when properly activated. The other notable thing is that you will need a second mortgage on your house to buy them.

Wow what a thorough testing process you did! This was very helpful. I'm wondering why you chose to use the soft Mimik brush. When I use my watercolor pencils, I use a firmer synthetic brush or a Pentel Aquash waterbrush and find that color dissolves more easily with that type of brush. I'm going to look for those Albrecht Durer Magnus pencils. Thanks for sharing!

This makes me SO happy. I'm only upset that it took me so long to find your channel. I am so grateful for how thorough this video, research and testing is. It also confirmed that my Albrecht Durer and Inktense are absolutely worth it. Hopefully I can use your research to prove to my husband that I am not getting swindled and that I'm getting top quality for my top dollar. While I LOVE Luminance and Prismacolor for my regular pencil work, I am a watercolor painter at the end of the day, line work being a close second. And I have never regretted buying Inktense or Albrecht Durer. Along with my watercolor paints and inks (that have taken me like 17 years to collect) I finally have my ideal collection. Hearing you say these 2 are the best just confirms my own use and makes me feel so much better.

Thank you so much for doing the HUGE amount of work you did creating this video! I am a total beginning beginner with watercolor pencils, and this was so helpful. I actually bought the Crayola pencils and some inexpensive watercolor paper to play with, but with more time on my hands now I've been thinking about upgrading my pencil set. But since I'm still just playing around I didn't want to spend a fortune. I'm going to try the Generals Kimberly (already ordered) and after we can go back into stores I might try picking up an individual pencil now and then of the pricier ones. I'm excited to see the difference between the #16 kid's brand and your #3 choice. Thank you again!

I am SO tickled to find out that the two brands in which I invested in detail (and which I use ALL of the time), ended up ranking #1 and #2 in your extremely thorough and accurate testing/ranking of the Battle of the Watercolor Pencils! I started in watercolor as my medium back in 2011, when I took up art as a hobby, and after I was introduced to watercolor pencils, I spent most of my time with them instead of my little watercolor tubes. Thanks for the comprehensive comparison! I have a tip to get some mojo back out of those Derwent Watercolour pencils. If you gesso your page first, the gesso tooth takes more pigment from the pencil tip and allows for CONSIDERABLY more vibrancy and the blending is much better also. Even when I sand down the tooth, it's still way better than on the paper directly. I was about to bin these pencils in frustration but may even keep them now as the colour range is not bad. I've been using Liquitex transparent gesso.

Thank you for making this video. It was a great look at each brand of pencil. However, I will say that I personally love Derwent's watercolor pencils. I've really learned how to use them well, and I would even rate them above my Arteza expert watercolor pencil set. I think the DWC pencils flow better once water is added. I do also want to try the AD set. 👍 General's was a nice surprise! 👏

I have to agree. As a professional artist I swear by Caran d'Ache and use them more than any other brand by miles. it's Nov 2022 at the time of writing this, so some time after your post, and just bought a 76 box of Museum Aquarelle after testing a few single colours and I rate them very very high. I also use Supracolor II, Pablo and Prismalo Aquarelle - they are all premium pencils for good reason.

Loved your detailed review and especially how you and Steve share the same passion and work together so wonderfully. It’s very beautiful to see you guys finish each other’s sentences or how he knows the exact word you’re looking for. I think I enjoy the interaction between you two as much as the reviews. Okay, as a watercolor artist primarily I mostly agreed with you about the pencils. I have the full set of Albrecht durer and yes amazing. I also have generals, inktense and inktense blocks, (omgosh are they amazing). I also use the caran d’ache water soluble crayons and the suprasoft are an incredible component to use with those, but I’d have to say the museum aquarelle are a tie for 1st for me. I use them alongside the luminescence pencils and again are just that extra key component. As I’m sure you can already tell, lightfast is extremely important to me for the work that I do. I’m drawing my own pieces here, and it’s so incredibly important that they don’t fade. I got into art after my only child, my beautiful son, passed away at 11yrs old. At first I was on gobs of medication, I just couldn’t cope, but I only grew more despondent. Art changed my life and now I pour all my passion into it. I was an artist prior, but nothing like what I am now. Because now it’s really all that I have that keep me sane and gives me hope. I can’t imagine all the hours you guys put into this, but maybe in the future you can add lightfast to your star rating and see if that might change the top contenders? I pretty much only use my general’s when I’m making cards for family, but the others are for my art. I know you put many hours into your coloring and I think it’s possible that other artists might care that all the hours they spend on a piece isn’t going to fade out after a few years and that’s why caran d’ache and derwent are always going to be on the top of the list. Some of those just aren’t meant for dry work and even though the color payoff seems lackluster in regular derwent watercolor pencils, it’s going to remain while the others will fade. It’s just a suggestion and maybe a future project you and Steve can add to your list of reviews. Thank you again. I enjoy watching you guys.

An amazing job and great presentation! This kind of objective comparison is super helpful for anyone finding herself in the art supply store color pencil aisle staring at all of those brands. I was hoping that you would include the Caran d' Ache Neocolor II line in your comparison. I assume that for you, they don't qualify as "pencils". Their dimensions are those of crayons, but hey, the F-C Magnum line that you so love is thick as well.

I was really reluctant to pay the money for the big name brand untested. You helped me decide and so I got a set (36) of your #1 rated pencils today in the mail and quickly tested them out. Hi puppy!) did such an amazing job exercising the capabilities on these for us to see. And yes, I know it’s subjective but isn’t all art? I think you picked out the most objective measurable characteristics you could but also explained the subjective measurements more than sufficiently. All that to say, I know this was a heck-ton of work and I’m just impressed and grateful :)

What a fabulous feat! Last night, before I saw this video, I purchased the Faber Castell. I almost got the Derwent...phew!!! I already had the Inktense. Love em! Thank you for all your hard work! 💕

My 72 set of Inktense pencils have been worth every single cent I paid for them. Michael's will have decent deals. If someone is looking into these, I do understand that it is an investment as far as pencils. But also, they're like luxury pencils and they do every single thing you want them to and more. They have a ton of uses and a lot of qualities that make them different from other watercolor pencils. If and when you have the extra money to invest.... then these are the ones.

I really enjoyed this video. The FaberCastell Albrecht Durer are my favorite watercolor pencils followed by the Derwent Inktense. Now I am slowly collecting the full sets of these. I can only imagine the hours that went into making this video. Thank you so much! Very informative!

You really provided a great hand in choosing what to buy. I made the mistake of buying some big name brands that turned out worse than the Crayola water color ones my dad had. I want to tell you thanks again and how much I respect your channel work. Love Marcia in Modesto

Very informative! I work with a lot of neutral coloured watercolours so I think I’ll have to get my hands on the graphitint! I have a few of the derwent watercolour pencils and mostly use them for small light details such as undertones of portraits due to their low payoff...love the inktense though :)

Thanks for doing all this work. I'm not a colorist, just a cardmaker who occasionally colors so I can only imagine all that went into the creation of this video. I own a set of Derwent Inktense that I haven't used in years and was just thinking of getting some watercolor paper and trying them out so I was happy to see they ended near the top.

First, I want to say that I found this video to be very informative and I enjoyed it very much. After having done a ton of reading and research I recently decided to pull the trigger on the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencil Set, 120 Assorted Colors. I found the best price I could online, braced myself and hit the "pay now" button. $$-Ouch!-$$ Well... then I found your video. It was kind of like reading a mystery, wondering who done it and if I'd guessed right. I haven't received my pencils yet, but after watching your review I am SUPER excited and feel much more confident in my decision and the buyers doubt/remorse is gone. Many Thanks!

Wow! That was a lot of work you put in. Thank you. I find it interesting that you had such a tough time layering the Derwent watercolored pencils because that's all I do with them is layer until my piece is nearly done and then I add water to smooth it out. I probably add 7-8 layers before I add the water. I'm excited to try the Faber Castle ones too see how it changes how I work... but the only things I can locate around me in open stock are the Derwent ones so I'll need to save up for the Faber Castle ones. Thanks again got all the effort you put into this video!

(I know, I'm such a good Mum) I discovered your clip by accident and just have to say - after watching numerous videos about techniques, softness of leads, pigments, etc., yours is by far the best and most informative. I love how you explain even the most simple things. Really great job. Congratulations and thank you!

Such a thorough review of products. I totally agree about the color from Derwent Intense...ove those...bought Arteza 120 Expert set based on raving from some friends...I don't reach for them often. I also almost bit the bullet for Spectrum Noir because I love some of their ink products...not going there after your review. Thanks again for your time and sharing your evaluations.

I appreciate your thorough testing! I would like to add that with Inktense pencils one thing that isn't mentioned is that they are fantastic for layering. Activate with water and let dry. Once dry add more color and activate with water for deeper color or shading. The layers don't blend into one another as the first layer is permanent. I know you don't think they are but in the case of bible journaling, it works great that way. It isn't watercolor paper so that may be the difference. Just a thought. Again, thanks for your incredible video!!! It helped me!

I'm glad the Albrecht Durer won. They're the only ones I've got and I've got a lot of them. ;D They really produce a ton of pigment, with the slightest amount of water. Very thorough video. Sweet little doggy. They're such treasures, how they just sit with you all the time.
