How do I colour a black ground? This is a question I'm often asked. So I thought I'd rise to the challenge and start experimenting with ways to create a near seamless smooth black background that can be applied to colouring books. After a lot of trial and error I came up with this way which I think will suit most good quality paper types AND be easily achievable for most colourists of any skill level.
To use my method you will need:
A budget priced black pencil... I use a Faber Castell Classic in my video as they seem to be widely available.
A Faber Castell PITT artist pen 'big brush' and a
Faber Castell Pitt artist pen B (for brush shaped tip) Both in black which are number 199 in the PITT range.
Before you commit this technique to your books PLEASE try them out on a scrap piece of paper and in a back page of your colouring book to make sure they will work on the paper you are using.
Faber castell Pitt Artists pens are available online from multiple retailers. Please look for open stock where you can buy individual pens if you don't want to commit to a set of colours. In Australia you can buy PITT Pens B from OfficeWorks and many craft stores stock PITT Pens 'big brush'.

I love your work, how you teach and that you don't do annoying chats. I also like that you don't wave your hands all over the place and dont have gaudy nails or rings. You are very professional and talented. I have seen one of your original pieces of art and would like to see more of them .

You just listed every single thing that I hate about other youtubers. They will talk forever about something random that has nothing to do with colouring and you are too dizzy from all the hand waving and distracted by gaudy nails that make you wonder how they even colour in the first place. Peta is a rare gem.

Dear Peta & all.i want to repay your kindness in sharing your knowledge about black backgrounds please hoping no one else already thought of it or if they did that it's doing well. When you talked about bleed through to the picture on the other side of the page I thought of a way to fix it. My husband had bought me some hot pink neon tape at least 2 in wide. With my exacto knife I cut a piece of the tape in small circles and "decorated" over the area that showed bleed thru.it could be unsuitable for some areas, but I got lucky. I bought the black pitt items you mentioned and will test my book/pencil for suitability in case they've changed the paper in that book. Thank you so much my fav coloring expert. Marcia in Modesto

Dear Peta.. I have bought every coloring book and every art supply that I ever thought I wanted in the last couple of months, and I've gone to KZfaq for help. You are by far the most informative, the most knowledgeable, and the most talented. I've watched more videos then I can remember... many of them yours, and yours are the best. I used to do . But now I don't have a studio anymore and I don't get around very well so I wanted things I could do from my bedroom. A lot of what I've purchased I haven't even opened but by gosh, I can sure learn how to use them.. thanks again..love Marcia in Modesto.

Thank you for this Peta, it was serendipity, I was just pondering how I could do a black background in Secret Garden after trying Prisma black and not being happy with the results. Off to Officeworks in the morning👏👏 Update-- This is exactly what I did and although my Officeworks didn’t have the larger pen( apparently I need to go to the Geelong store or online for that one🤗🤗) I was thrilled with the fine pen and the job it did over pencil for a very slick black background. Thanks again Peta.

Hi Peta! Whew! Just finished doing a black background as directed around the Dagdrommar Crown. Thanks so much for your tutorial. It worked very nicely ... but ... alas ... I think it needs a second coat to get the finish a tad smoother looking. It was an experiment. I think I will stick to the soft pastels in the future. I've been avoiding doing backgrounds on my "masterpieces" wink wink ... I think it's time to learn how to work with the soft chalk. P.S. Took another look this morning and I don't think I really need to do a second coat. It looks pretty good!

+Peta Hewitt Yup! I've just ordered a nice little set of the Pitt pens in black (I had no idea they had so many different TIPS - small set has 6 different ones) AND finally ordered a Signo white gel pen. One of my kitties had surgery last week and I think -*-I-*- am coping by going a bit overboard on my crafting. ;-) Can't wait to try this out (on a back page first to see which black pencil works best since I have wax-based and oil-based brands). AND I have started recording all my colors - got all my Inktense done so now I'm ready to start Magical City (I think I'm a Peta-disciple ;-)

Hi Peta :) Did you find you had any streaks or blotches when you finished the black background on the first book? I recently used a black Posca Pen to colour in a background in Dagdrommar and it streaked and blotched dreadfully, totally ruined my picture. But I think I may have been at fault, perhaps overdoing it. Lesson learned, even after testing on a section of blank page with everything looking good in the book, things can still go wrong. I put a layer of black derwent pencil down before starting the Posca pen too, so not sure if that was a help or a hindrance. I hope everything is settling down for you and we see you back here soon :)
