Hi everyone! In this video I share how I use stencils in my colouring books with a few examples. Hope you find it useful and thanks for watching.

awesome video! So many great ideas! Today i used some old soft pastels i really forgot i had. I used a piece of t shirt fabric and rubbed on the pastel and then the stencil. it worked really well and added So much to the page. Thanks for sharing all your techniques. They do bring coloring to the next level so to speak. I enjoy seeing your art!!!!

Thank you for the video. Glad you posted this, I haven't seen the Silky Crayons before this video. I have Gelatos (very creamy, too expensive for most of my experimental projects) and Super Crayons (not as creamy, much less expensive, great for texture rubbings).

Try “softies” from Lavinia Stamps to apply inks & pan pastels. They are like small makeup sponges. ♥️♥️♥️

I love your steampunk stencil, I think I may have to make a purchase :) If you cut a small square of a normal kitchen dish sponge and dab acrylic paint on it gives a lovely texture and not as messy x

Thank you, it would have been good seeing how the die cut stencils differ from the ‘normal’ plastic stencils. But great seeing all the different media that can be used. Now just need to find the stencils.

Thanks for watching. I think the die cut stencils give a negative image, so the image on the paper stays white (uncoloured) and the area around it is filled with whatever medium you are using.

Thanks for tips! I did try a fireworks sky after seeing your completed pages. I realized i couldnt use watercolor through stencil and have been wondering how you did it. I ended up using sharp white pencil to get shape onto pg and then painting over that but your technique of using inks would probably work better :)

That is an alternative way to do it - with the white pencil but it was just a bit quicker for me when using the inks. Thanks for sharing! 😊

I’ve got dozens of brass stencils that I used to emboss using a light box. They’re small scale so might work well in coloring books or cards using your media types and using the pounce or swirl method. Have you tried using Momento Dew Drops or the little 1 inch ink pads direct to paper with stencils? How about using Shiva sticks to scribble on a nonporous surface and then pickup the color from there? I wonder if they will work like gelatos. Thank you for the stencil idea. 👍

I quite like tour video's, and the reason is your beautiful calm voice. I am learning more background techniques, would you be able to list the names of the tools you are using? The circular brushes are of particular interest.

Thanks so much Alice. The watercolour palette is a custom one which I put together by buying the Finetec Coliro paints open stock as single pans - they are available from Jackson’s art. There are various colours available.

Great video! I bought some stencils from AliExpress that I assume are for card makers (given their size) I’m actually thinking of cutting the borders, because I cannot get a seamless pattern, I’ve only tried them with distress inks, maybe for using the paint the stencil does need to be pasted on to the page? They certainly have a learning curve and I would definitely try the effects on a PDF. I also bought some stamps, I have to find a way to use them…

Can you explain the difference between the distress ink and the oxide. I’ve heard that the oxide will bleed through in colouring books?

I personally haven’t found the oxides bleeding through the paper. The oxides are a dye and pigment ink combined and the distress oxides may just be pigment based (not entirely sure), however as the oxide inks stay wetter longer, they are easier to blend on paper.

Crown - used Coliro Arabic gold watercolour I think and I use the Quickie glue pen to adhere the glitter

Wow! All your work is awesome. May I ask you what the brand of the metallic watercolor pallet you used? Those colors looked so pretty and vibrant. I’ve been shopping for a set and comparing different brands but there are so many I can’t decide. The ones in your video were so bright and that’s exactly what I’m looking for.

Hi Dawn. I use the Finetec Coliro brand which you can purchase from Jackson’s art or Paperstory online for individual open stock pans or in sets on Amazon for example. I also use various paints from Etsy stores, my favourite being Reneeissance colours and The Art Spirits. Thanks for watching.

Another idea to keep stencils in place: washi tape. Repositionable and you don't have to worry about buying more sprays, aerosols in the air, etc. And really who doesn't have some washi tape lying around? :)

@31:50 the roller isn't working cause It cant get lower than the stencil. Maybe try a house painter's roller, which has fuzzy bits, that will stick out far enough to get past the stencil edges.

I haven't tried it with acrilyc paint yet but I like the way it came out, which colour and brand was that minty green paint you used last, I really like that color. WOW! Just found you and am sooo happy I did! In your coloring book, on the fireworks page(stencil) did you color the castle with the Gel Crayons? What was the name of the board you put the colors on? I have gel pens, but never heard of gel crayons. I want some? You do fantastic work! Thank you😊

Thanks so much and welcome to my channel. I didn’t use the gel crayons on the castle, I think I used pencils. The board is the Caran d’ache palette board. Gel crayons are great and quite reasonably priced.
