I own a Mustang and a Defender. I have zero problems with function or performance of both guns. However I replaced the Defender duo-recoil spring with a Kimber duo-recoil spring. Not that the Colt recoil spring didn't work, but it was a bear to reinstall after cleaning the gun. Other than that, I love the guns.

@@zack9912000 Actually the Kimber spring is built just like the colt, but its a better design. The one exception is that the plate (a small end plate) on the colt spring wiggles and is hard to install on the this colt model. The Kimber's spring plate is stationary, much easier to install.

I did the same thing. I bought my gun used. It was made twenty years ago. The dual recoil guide rod spring, and two piece guide rod were an absolute nightmare to reassemble. The one-piece Kimber guide rod and spring makes this gun a joy to shoot and much easier to reassemble. Great gun once these changes are made. Maybe Colt is listening?

I’ve owned two Defenders for a couple of years now; one in 9mm and the other in 45ACP. In my practical experience with them I’d say the 9mm was good right away. The 45ACP though has a couple of minor personality issues. The extractor is a little temperamental unless you’re ok with the half moon cuts in your forehead, and feeding reliability is 100% if I constrain my ammo selection to 185 gr flat nose ammo. The gun is a little sensitive to OL issues and some 230 gr FMJ rounds tend stay nose down in the magazine.

Damn. I figured round nose would feed good while the flat rounds would jam.

The velocity/energy difference between the Defender and 4.25 and 5" 1911s defeat the purpose of carrying a 1911. Please do some research on that SIGNIFICANT difference.

My Defender in 9mm shoots more accurately than any of my striker fire guns. That 1911 trigger is so crisp and clean with no creep at all. I also have a Canick which has a really nice trigger but the trigger operation is so much more complex with travel, take up and a small bit of creep. I thought it couldn't be beat until I got the Colt Defender. I do wish Colt made it slightly larger to handle 10 + 1 rather than 8 + 1.

I wish they would have incorporated the feed ramp as part of the barrel. Instead the aluminum frame is the feed ramp! A steady diet of ball or HP rounds really beat the feed ramp all to hell! If you own this gun the only way to fix the problem is with a brass brush with a lot of solvent, and brush the hell out of the feed ramp! It will remove the dents and dings. If the frame was stainless instead of aluminum you wouldn’t have that problem. I would opt for the Elite Defender for an extra few hundred or so..

@@Joe_Friday I shoot what ever I want in both my 1911’s. Get a brass brush, spray it with Strike Force or some other solvent, and scrub that feed ramp with the brass brush. It takes all the dents and scratches right off the feed ramp.

@@Davidmoore-xy6wu LOL I carry everyday with a 5 inch Sig Tacops 1911 in a LAG Tactical holster and I don't even feel the weight. You again clearly dont carry 1911s ever or do not have any clue how to carry one. If you have a stiff belt and good holster the weight is a non issue. 1911s are just so much smoother than a polymer. I have both a Glock 26 and a Colt Defender and even though you get more capacity with the 26, the Colt Defender has barely any recoil which makes me much more accurate than I would be with my glock. Plus you get that big 45 bullet that will kill anything that moves.

I really appreciate that they demonstrated this thing's ability to perform adequately out to 25 yards. Truth in advertising, I'm not some crack shot or marksman. I'm not. That being said however, on a 25 yard indoor range, I'm fishing the target out to 25 yards no matter what I'm shooting that day. Anything I carry? I generally have to be putting them in at 4" to 6" @ 25 yards. Am I advocating, endorsing, or otherwise attempting to sing the virtues of 25 yard effective hits with a carry pistol? Nope. Is it a great idea logistically and/or legally? In all likelihood, probably not. Will there ever come a time that it's necessary for someone to attempt to successfully do it?
