I’ve been reading my cousin’s, Stephen Kutschbach, letters home from Army basic training in spring/summer 1968. In one of his letters he writes that he trained on the new M16 that day. He goes on to say he wasn’t sure he liked it but he “shot expert” on it. I guess that’s the final nail in the coffin of wood and steel in the military. It’s not about looks, it’s about survival. Sadly Stephen was killed in Vietnam in February 1969. He earned a bronze star in the process.

I served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1971 and trained with the M14 in basic training. I can attest to the M14 being a "heavy" rifle. It shoots the powerful 308 (7.62X51) bullet and was very accurate out to 600 meters or so. However, it did weigh about 12 lbs. plus loaded and you could feel it after marching for hours on end. We were later issued the M16A1 and loved the compact size and lower weight of about 6.5 lbs. We could carry a lot more ammo and it was also very accurate out to 600 meters. It was a much better weapon in many respects and quickly became my favorite and the favorite of my GI friends as well. Great video of the M16A1. Hats off to Hickok45 and John.

@@Fausto410 Oh boy, Ok so, yes, the U.S lost the War. BUT! That was because we had signed a peace treatment with the NVA, (North Vietnamese Army) and the Vietcong. The War then "ended" and so the U.S started pulling its troops out of it. (Vietnam) Then, on 1977, on I believe a celebration day in Vietnam, the NVA, and Vietcong began a series of attacks on the South. (South Vietnam) in the end, the U.S THOUGHT they had succeeded, but failed to stop the spread of communism. So, the reason they "lost" is because they, (NVA, Vietcong.) Broke, and made something somewhat illegal, and out of the U.S's hands, and power. And I just want to point out, is that the U.S lost 10% of what the NVA, and Vietcong lost in troops. The NVA being 1,000,000+, and the U.S being 54,000 troops lost. So, just a little History for ya, and also no big deal I just like talking bout' this stuff. :D

This was the weapon I used from '84-'88 with the Army. Our weapons in basic training were reconditioned ones from the Vietnam war. As a southpaw sometimes we were given a plastic brass deflector at the range. If the range did not have them, I ended up with hot brass flying in my face. Even if the A2 was a bit heavier I appreciated the fact it had a built-in brass deflector.

As a young Marine, I qualified Expert three times with the M16A1 during my 81-85 enlistment. At first, the sights sucked but once you figured them out and got used to them, they were accurate. I learned that each individual rifle had a different point of impact so it helped to write down the yardage sight dope for each rifle. Great video!

I’m a Vietnam Veteran, and I can attest to the killing power of my M16A1. In 1971, at the Cu Chi tunnels, I was involved in a firefight, and I used Automatic (Rock and Roll), to dispatch a number of NVA. After observing the dead NVAs, I saw that the entry wound was small, but the exit wound was huge. The only issue was when I had to use my bayonet, because the charging bolt dug into the soft tissue between my thumb and pointing finger.

Thanks for this. Please also sincerely thank your Father and Uncle. I thinking your Uncle was ROK cadre or ROK Marines who operated in the vicinity of Quang Ngai Province? Tiger Division? They remain held in great respect by Marines and Soldiers who served with them. You probably know NVA and VC would flee an area rather than engage with them. They were the finest of men. To a man sometimes outright scary to early in-country young American Marines. They were great to be around when not out on operations most with a great natural sense of humor despite collectively grim circumstances. Great drinking partners too. But never to be fck'd with.

14:10 BTW, originally, the magazines were meant to be single-use ones. They were made of a relatively soft and cheap aluminum, and they were called "waffle magazines" due to the waffle-like stamp-outs on their sides. They would come pre-loaded, each holding 20 rounds, wrapped in a foil-like plastic wrapping. But later on, the military had decided to follow the more traditional way -- multi-use steel magazines (later, aircraft grade aluminum) loaded by operators.

What a cool video! The A1, along with the M7 bayonet in an M8 scabbard and the steel pot helmet - these were the tools of the trade when I was in the infantry, low those many years ago. Brought back a lot of memories. One thing in particular I think about every time I see an A1 without the brass deflector, was something they used to do back in the day. The big green machine had brass deflectors that bolted onto the carry handle for left-handed shooters. Unfortunately for them, it seemed like any time we were on the range there were never any of the bolt on deflectors available - so they told left handed shooters to button their top button on their fatigue shirt. You could always tell who the left handers that couldn't follow instructions were - they were the ones walking around with a big burn on the side of their neck. Turns out brass is hot - particularly when it gets stuck between your shirt and your skin. Anyway, thanks for posting this vid. As I said, it brought back a lot of memories.

When I joined the Army, the A1 was what we trained with. When I got to my first duty station is was the A2. NOW, the A1 I was issued was full auto capable, whereas the A2 I was issued was not. I'm sure there were many full auto A2's out there but the one I was issued had "Burst" (a 3 round burst for every held trigger pull) In my 8 years of active duty, I don't think I ever had an A3 and certainly not an A4. I do remember when the SAW came out (Squad Automatic Weapon) I had the M60 at the time (along with my M16 and M9) and swore by all but the M9 (jamamatic). The M60 never jammed. The SAW was the jamamatic and all but useless in close area fire because conditions had to be almost perfect for that thing to work like it should. You couldn't manhandle it like a 60! I don't know if this is of any use, but maybe just a little to add to the M16 story.

I was in the infantry from 1969 to 1971 and, once trained, was issued the very M16 you are showcasing...the M16A1. If I recall correctly, you could break down the plastic fore-stock and, inside the plastic halves, it read: "Mattell Corp"! I don't know about the rest of the guys but, for me that inscription didn't engender a whole lot of confidence in such a new (non-M14) rifle!

Got to my 1st Duty Station, 1st Marines, received an M-16 A1, plain steel barrel. Then later issued an M-203 , still plain barrel. Then in late '78 our weapons were receiving new barrels with Chromium lined bores. That definitely made it easier to clean. Also tightened up my shot groups, already Expert, but improved my score.
