Great stuff. More of these please Felipe. Detailed and succinct reviews without all the ramble that seems to happen on those “epic”Friday Night videos. There is much more for us to absorb here. Cheers from Oz.

Thanks again Filipe for another excellent and fact filled presentation. Most people don't even know what Ballads are anymore. We are slowly loosing that level of expression.. That is why every iteration of these tunes are so important. When future generations look back we need to ensure they will find this, one way or the other.

Well said, glad that you appreciate it. I am a firm believer that all art forms have a context, and a reason to exist in that particular way. Just saying "sounds good" does not add much. Thanks for watching, means a lot! F

This and Lush Life are definitely Coltranes most accessible albums imo. Beautiful simplicity doesnt always translate to boring. Love both albums, though Ballads I believe is better recorded. Sounds like a winner of a UHQR to eek out that extra Coltrane and band closer to being “their” in your living space. Thanks Felipe for the review.

Great review…I agree that this and the Johnny Hartman record are his best in my opinion. I am happy with my AP 33 version and your review helped to cement those thoughts and not jump on the upgrade train. Now if they do a UHQR of the Coltrane/Hartman record…I might be more inclined to upgrade for that one.

Nice review, Filipe. I appreciate what came through as an honest and genuine assessment. AP is nailing it now with the UHQRs by focusing on 45s. I don’t find the 33 UHQRs to be a great value or improvement over other options. The 45 UHQRs, on the other hand, approach tape at less than a third the price.

good review Felipe... I am quite happy with my copy that I already have, and would prefer to save the shelf space for something else. Dont get me wrong, I love the UHQR series, but i think my criteria for buy a UHQR rests firmly on "do I need it?" and "Do I want it?"

Great review/presentation, Felipe - I really like these "deep" videos (as the ones you did on Lee Morgan). And it IS a great record. Thanks. I wonder if part of the reason that Coltrane made "Ballads" (and maybe the Hartman and the Ellington albums too) was that Impulse wanted records that they were sure would sell? Think I heard/read this somewhere, but I-m not sure. You know? I'll stick to my AP33 from 2020. It sounds great (as you also say). And I really don't like that the hunt for the last 5-10 % sound details break up the listening experience (interruptions - 4 sides in stead of 2). I know we look different on the UHQR boxes 😉.(I find them "bloated", clumsy - and a misguided, petty-bourgeois attempt to make a record look like a book, as if this were finer than an LP...). So for me that an other reason not to buy it, but I know a lot of people love them though... Keep up the good work you (and your JB-partners).

Hi Claus, thanks, I do love the historical/artistic perspective, and I believe they are the most important at the end of the day. Just "sounds good" is shallow. Both versions are great, which show how good the recording was and how good is the work by Ryan Smith. Outstanding. Regarding the commercial aspect, hard to be 100% exact. A label is a business and needs to make ends meet. At the same time there was an artistic/musical "battle" going on. But I don't see him would recording three records in a row, under a contract, just to satisfy the label. Especially with Ellington. I see that one as an important game changer for his career. He learned how to deliver his feelings using a different perspective and McCoy playing has changed as well. That's where they became the classic quartet. F

Changing the subject matter... you briefly mentioned Impulse! A-21 Coltrane. Chad released a 45 RPM version years ago. Can you ask Chad if there are any plans for a 33 1/3 Coltrane Impulse! A-21 1962. Thank you, Felipe. 😊

Interesting on the Michael Fraser review of the Miles Davis 45 RPM. He says it is not hand pressed Have emailed acoustic Sounds and no reply. I think it was a big deal and helped justify the price rather than the speed and the vinyl formula. Cheers
