It was a quiet Saturday morning on Columbia's campus, but students remain camped out on the main lawn. CBS New York's John Dias reports.

PLEASE READ TO PROTECT YOURSELF VS POLICE VIOLENCE !!! WHAT STUDENTS MUST DO IF THEY WERE UNLAWFULY ARRESTED! : 1 .Remain calm and polite. Do not physically resist arrest, as this could lead to additional charges 2. Assert your right to remain silent. Other than providing your name and basic identifying information, you have the right not to answer questions from police. Clearly state that you are invoking your right to remain silent. 3. Ask for a lawyer immediately. You have the right to legal counsel before answering questions. Do not say anything further to police until you have a lawyer present. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you. 4. Do not sign anything or consent to searches without a lawyer. Police may try to get you to waive your rights or consent to searches of your property. 5. Document everything. As soon as possible after release, write down all the details you can remember about your arrest - officer names and badge numbers, what was said, how you were treated, any injuries, etc.16 This contemporaneous record will be important for your defense. 6. f you have bruises or any fact of phisical violence from the police : Seek medical attention and document the wounds. If you sustained any injuries during your arrest, get them documented and treated by medical professionals right away and take photos of any visible injuries. 7. Contact a criminal defense lawyer experienced with student defense. Look for an attorney who understands the interplay between criminal charges and university disciplinary proceedings 8. Consider filing a formal complaint. If you believe your civil rights were violated, you can file a complaint with the police department's internal affairs division and/or civilian complaint board Your lawyer can advise you on this process. 9.Discuss your case with your lawyer before speaking publicly. While it is understandable to want to share your story, be very cautious about making public statements or posting on social media about your pending criminal case without your lawyer's guidanc P..s. 1. government entities, public universities are bound by the First Amendment, so students on public campuses have free speech rights to protest peacefully. 2.Students do not lose their right to free speech just by walking into school. They have the right to speak out, hand out flyers, wear expressive clothing, etc. as long as they don't disrupt the functioning of the schoo 3.Schools cannot punish students more harshly for missing class to protest because of the political nature of the action. 4.Colleges have an obligation to protect students' free speech rights. peace an love!!!

@Krantzstone2 ай бұрын
@barryseebo3535, I understand your perspective and the need for order on campus. However, it's important to remember that universities are places of learning and growth, and part of that growth involves challenging existing norms and advocating for change. While it's true that free speech rights are often associated with government restrictions, they also extend to other public spaces, including universities. The principle of free speech is not just about the right to express one's views, but also the right to protest and seek change. Expulsion or arrest might seem like straightforward solutions, but they don't address the underlying issues that led to the protest in the first place. Instead of shutting down these discussions, we should be encouraging dialogue and understanding. Negotiations can be a constructive way to address grievances, find common ground, and work towards solutions that respect the rights and needs of all parties involved. Remember, today's students are tomorrow's leaders. The skills they learn in navigating these complex issues will serve them and our society in the future. Let's give them the space to learn, grow, and lead.

While a booth to say here is what is happening in a foreign country y is acceptable. Staging a days long siting to show your dissatisfaction with something going on in a foreign county is an effort in futility. Furthermore, we have video of students who do not want a discussion, they want to use the hecklers veto for differing opinion, make statements related to genocide while protesting what they perceive as genocide, have faculty (the real source) supporting their actions and thinking, constantly make statements there is historically ignorant, and in one viral case, do not even know why they are there protesting.
