Eureka!!! We found...Columbia CA!!!
Join Kendall as he looks around this town that's still in the California Gold Rush period. Along the way, we'll learn about the towns origins and what to do in town. It'll be a rich historic experience for everyone. This old gold mining town has been converted to a California State Park and is an excellent representation of what historic gold rush towns were like. From the general store to the blacksmith shop, visitors will learn the important role all played. This is a look at the rich history and see what has been well preserved for visitors to see now. This is a great potential field trip and place for a family visit if you are trying to add perspective to California teaching standards for fourth (4th) grade history.

Agreed. The gold rush had a big impact on early California demographics.

I went to Columbia Elementary in the late 1950s until 1966. My family has lived in nearby Shaws Flat since 1850. One thing Kendall didn't get to: the old cemetery and historic schoolhouse, just up the hill from the main section of Columbia. They are well worth a visit. One grave is of a man murdered over water rights, so it says on his headstone. There is a section where Chinese people were buried, segregated from the rest of the graves. The two-story schoolhouse is very well preserved, and was built of brick in 160. Also, the stage coach rides for visitors are fun. A schoolmate's dad built them by hand, and my best friend used to have a summer job robbing stagecoaches. Back in 1965 some kids from Columbia Elementary toilet-papered the town and pasted Beatles stickers on windows. Someone snitched and the kids were banned from Columbia for a year. Shirley Freitas
