These are currently available from Amazon for $35. Here is the link to them. amzn.to/3m5suJM I thought they could be of use on the property and it peaked my interest. Was my money well spent, or should I have just bought one locally for $5?
The answer is..... Well, it depends. The quality and fit and finish of these is horrible. They're unfinished and not useable out of the the box. My guess is that these are seconds that didn't make the grade.
On the other hand, I dig the non-traditional machete blade styles that were included; they're not something I could buy for cheap locally. With a bit of work, I can turn these into useable blades. If I didn't have that ability, I would be sorely disappointed.
Thanks for watching and take care.

I was recently in Walmart and looked at the "Ozark trails" brand machete. It was $5 and it didn't have any of the issues that these surplus ones suffered from. As far as steel strength and heat treat go, it would be fun to test them.

@@ironridgeoutdoors the "choil" is that way on purpose, people carry them at that spot. These aren't actually surplus, you're right in that they're seconds, FYI. :-) Also, a few things you claim were quality issues, they aren't. That's deliberate. The end user is supposed to sharpen them according to their intended use, and the wooden handled ones are made chunky specifically so that the end user can shape the handle to their hands. Also, the tips are left blunt on purpose, nobody cuts with the tip, and a sharp tip would get chipped/broken by hitting rocks, etc. . Machetes made in central and south America are made that way for legit reasons, check with some of the local machete users. :-)

Not only were these unfinished, but they're bent, and have very uneven plunges. It's so much worse than just an unfinished edge. It's interesting you can't see that. Also, these are more expensive than the machetes that are available in every local store. Furthermore, the local ones include a sheath for that $5 price tag.

You mentioned the Harbor Freight machetes and yes they look and feel nice but don't last long. I've gone through 4 of them haha the edges roll and chip first use, 3 of them snapped in half, and handle came off one. Too thin for stainless steel I guess. Maybe they'd be fine for just grass and weeds. I'm sure those Columbian machetes are carbon steel and like you said if the heat treat was good they should be pretty tough.

I think these are all Columbian Machined Machetes. Spear & Jackson supplies the materials to be machined in Columbia. It's labeled made in Britain/UK because majority of the tool (the steel) comes from UK. The last step, the rivets might have also been assembled in UK. If the finishing step is done in the UK, along with majority of the material being UK steel, it qualifies as a UK product, even if it technically is a Columbian made machete from UK steel, Columbian wood handle, and finished in the UK with UK rivets. They're all Columbian Machetes. There are a few Machetes that are made with German Steel as well from Columbia. Basically, it's a tariff law issue.

I live in Central America. We buy these machete's in the supermarket or any agro or feed store or hardware store. They come dull. They used to be about 3.50. Now they are 5.50 with the current inflation going on now. You have to sharpen them. They come from various country's. Most have plastic handles. Some wood. All dull. Some are excellent machete's. I use gloves when I use them.

Machetes come blunt for safety reasons. Any guy who calls himself a knife guy knows how to sharpen a machete. Don’t expect straight blades on working tools, they’re not high end knives. Also, machetes come unsharpened near the handle so they can be carried easily, they also get tucked into belts and you don’t want certain parts sharp. Those machetes are fine for what they are. Your square end machete is called a Tapanga, the upside down curved one is called a billhook. The first and second one you pulled out are Latin style machetes, the other is a Panga.
@ironridgeoutdoors
@ironridgeoutdoors 2 ай бұрын
Yes, I know full well how to sharpen an edge. Most machetes bought in the states come with working edges though, so that's what I'm accustomed to. Also, that doesn't excuse the poor craftsmanship on each of these blades. The burnt edges, uneven primary bevels and wavy blades are not present on the competition. A $7 Ozark trails machete from Walmart outshines these in every way.

@ironridgeoutdoors
@ironridgeoutdoors Жыл бұрын
These aren't unground. They have primary bevels and are lacking the secondary. That's not the problem though. The primary bevels on these are uneven, burnt, and inconsistent. $5 gets you an Ozark Trails machete that has well ground bevels, a sharpened secondary bevel, a better handle design, and a sheath. The steel on the Ozark Trails machete has proven itself in comparison to these Columbian ones as well.

I don't have a problem with unsharp machete coz they could be shape with. what can u expect from cheap price machete? All machete comes like that. If u want sharpen quality machete order condor, cold steel and other well knwn machete in the market. But if u want cheap price that can match all then Seattle for that kind. It'll be sturdy in use depends only if u abuse it without proper knowledge of the tool your using then it definitely broke down. No matter how top it is.

The walmart machete performs just as well as these, has a straighter blade, finished bevels, better handle, sharpened edge and a sheath for $7. It represents a better deal than what these surplus machetes offer. I did a comparison video, go check it out.

Machetes come like that so you put the edge on it that you need for your application based on your vegitation. The unsharpened area is for pinch grips. People from northern regions tend to not "get" machetes like people from Latin America, Africa, etc. Americans often want to put a razor edge on them like a knife and expect them to perform on northern hardwoods like an ax or hatchet. In my humble opinion, this gentleman could benefit from a little multicultural education- someone who knows and grew up using these tools. 18:50 and 19:26 through the 23min mark for example. Yikes! I hope he doesn't injure himself and I wouldn't work near him.
@ironridgeoutdoors
@ironridgeoutdoors 10 ай бұрын
I have found that Americans tend to expect tools to come from the factory ready to use. That still doesn't negate the fact that these are seconds, and are of sub par quality. A $5 machete from Walmart out performed these in every way for my uses.

It’s called a courtesy edge, machetes are never shipped sharp. If they were, they would need a sheath or something to keep from cutting through the box. The long choil is there so you can choke up on it for finer work. Criticizing a tool because you don’t understand it’s intended use is quite strange. Perhaps you’d be better to inform yourself PRIOR to purchasing something. Watch some joe flowers videos. The opening scenes of this video just make you look ignorant and foolish.
@ironridgeoutdoors
@ironridgeoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Interesting opinion, thanks for sharing. With that said, just because they ship machetes with dull edges in other countries, doesn't negate the fact that when compared to machetes commonly available in America, they require additional work. I talked about how choking up on a thin, wide slab of steel is useless and simply uncomfortable if you have a well designed handle. So the 4-6 inch unsharpened choil is overkill and ridiculous. On top of that, the primary bevels are so unevenly ground, it is clear that whoever was grinding didn't take their time. If your opinion differs than mine, great. If everyone thought the same, this would be a boring world indeed. But to say I don't understand how a blade is used is simply arrogant, and incorrect. As an avid outdoorsman and bladesmith, I have a better understanding than most in the real of bladed tools. Cheers.
