@Bobbie Charles yeah I watched a mini documentary on the series and I can't remember who coined the phrase, but Columbo, instead of being a "whodunnit" is a "howcatchem". It's "intrigue without mystery". Either way it's pretty obvious who the killer is, but it is kind of nice that you can miss the beginning of the episode (or not) and still thoroughly enjoy it for the cat and mouse chase... Or maybe it's a duck chasing a fox? Lol

Welcome to the club! :) I was introduced to Columbo when I was 14 or 15 and I instantly loved him. He was like the drunken fist of sleuthing-constantly making the suspect underestimate and misjudge him. And Peter Falk is just flat out amazing. Enjoy the ride! :)

I was 20 when I saw my first Columbo in 1983 and I was instantly hooked on it. I had a Betamax VCR at the time and I used to get two episodes into a tape, and kept on buying tapes and filling them up with Columbo episodes. This one of the episodes I remember most from that time as well as the William Shatner episode "Fade into Murder", which was similar to this in that murderer also used a new fangled video recorder with a huge shoulder mounted video camera connected to it, to try to disguise the real time of when he committed the murder.

I'm surprised he didn't do this more often. On more than one occasion the suspect has tried to kill Columbo when he or she realises that Columbo has them but fortunately for Columbo he survives.

Yep, he's incredibly articulate and incisive, which catches his suspects completely off guard. Watching Columbo on a case is kind of like watching a great boxer bob and weave around the ring, and just when you blink, he comes in for the knockout blow

I also like that even though we know the murderer, there are still little things that Columbo picks up that the average person wouldn't think about, so there is actually an element of mystery because of the clues. Like when he questioned the footprints outside of the house and questioned why there were no footprints of the "thief" in the house.

Increasingly getting details is how cops get arrests in real life too, most liars have painted a vague painting in their mind and their story breaks down after some questions, those who have put a bit of thought into the details could fool you for 5 minutes, but an hour or two or interview theyve little to no chance to have a consistent story. And especially considering theres many things that can and do go wrong in the world, witnesses, and a plethora of evidence a person wouldn't think of, then things become really hard. And on top of all that a killer would have an excuse that makes sense in their own heads, but falls outside human nature, an unnatural reaction, a very strange thing to do. And cops through questioning will notice "well they seem to be behaving normally for everything else, but this one thing concerning the murder, they haven't! Well that doesn't make sense I'm going to keep on digging" which is very Columbo like. And years ago I used to think Columbo wasn't very realistic but after seeing a number of police interrogation videos, it was more in line with real life than I thought!

By the time of CSI, we were all ourselves as internet users experts in video technology and it was clearly false. At this time, as you say, it was a brave new world.

This was a common (and irritating) trope for decades in a ton of movies and tv shows. Ironically, with 8k (and beyond) cameras we can finally zoom/crop deep into a video, just in time for that scene from Blade Runner to be correct (still no flying police cars though).

The zoom-in was only a magnification of about 4x. Doesn't seem that unreasonable - especially compared to the ridiculous blowups in modern day shows where they use a reflection off a shiny surface (mirror or car window) from a security camera, 50ft away, with maybe 4x this tapes' resolution.

Yes, and mostly for this one character. Peter Falk realized it was his perfect role. When “Columbo” was being cast, he is said to have told his agent, “I would kill to play this part.”

Gina was one of the great cryers. Not an easy skill.

Peter Falk was at a baseball game and an umpire made a lousy call. Falk removed his glass eye and offered it to the umpire “here, maybe this will help you see better”. EPIC

Much as I've found myself enjoying some of the remake shows these days, I can't think of anyone who could pull off a modern version of Columbo. Falk left a gigantic shadow and being in it would frighten any actor trying to succeed him in his most famous role.

If Columbo was filmed today, Columbo would be a gender-fluid otherkin of color...anything else would be something-ist (always "racist," like everything, but more)

If you want to know what it's actually like, I only have one eye after a terrible injury some years ago. The only disadvantages are loss of depth perception and narrower field of view but as far as noticing details or seeing anything it's not any hindrance so I don't think it would be any handicap for his investigative abilities.

He generally does. Like, even pretty early on, he often has an idea who is guilty, then the rest is just him patiently hounding them, asking questions, poking at the stated facts.

Unfortunately, that explanation was a bit of magic. Resolution on video cameras back then wasn't particularly good, and the idea that you could "blow up" an image infinitely isn't even a reality today.

This was probably one of the easiest who done-its for columbo. He just had to prove it. There were no other reasonable suspects. The killer is just out of camera range and this guy has the whole house wired tighter than fort knox.

Columbo by his own admission isn't a genius, he said in one episode that he isn't that smart and he makes mistakes in every case, the difference between him and the killer is he can make loads of mistakes, the killer no matter how smart only needs to make one mistake.

He’s just very observant. The murderers always let down they guard because they perennially underestimate him.

They only learn once its too late, lol.

It is also his perceverance! He just can let go before the case is solved!!! And he has an eye for details other people do not even notice!
