I love the way Columbo drove all the killers insane with his politeness 🙂

That was mighty humble and considerate of Columbo, to offer credit to the Sergeant who thought he had solved the case. The kind of scenes that make his character so likeable.

One of the best closing lines ever. “If I forgot this my wife would kill me” 😂😂😂 How understated.

Columbo got to the root of the mystery and weeded out the criminal.

This was one of the better episodes of Columbo. Ray Milland was outstanding as well as Peter Falk's usual superb acting. What impresses me most about this episode is how Columbo plays the humble and apologetic lieutenant up to the final 5 minutes, at which point he nails Ray Milland and surprises everyone in the audience with the evidence of the gun. Great stuff, Columbo!

I love the look on Ray Milland's face when he realizes he fucked up.

Aside from the brilliant ending, Columbo also shows a great kindness for Mrs. Goodland, exposing her lover on the boat.

You know, if you think about it, Columbo really goes the extra mile. He doesn't have to _prove_ his case to the suspect. All he really has to do is gather evidence and make the arrest. He's doing the DA's job.

Hah, a point I'd never noticed before. 1. Columbo offers Mrs. Goodland a chair. 2. Mrs. Goodland says she prefers to stand, thank you. 3. Columbo brings her a chair anyway. 4. Mrs. Goodland doesn't touch it, saying there will be plenty of time to rest in prison. 5. Columbo definitely proves that Jarvis murdered her husband, and has him led away. 6. Mrs. Goodland sinks, open-mouthed, into the chair that Columbo brought her five minutes ago.

“Uh, actually, ma’am, could you grab that metal detector? It’s expensive and I suppose I shouldn’t leave it here in this empty house.”

In some episodes, he produces a preponderance of evidence. In this one, he finds one hard fact that forces one to accept his accusation.

Love Bob Dishy as Sergeant Frederic Wilson he is Columbo's Dr.Watson and lets us into Columbo's way of thinking, Sgt. Wilson did a nice reprise to the roll in "Now you see him" with Jack Cassidy as The Great Santini. They tried to introduce a similar character in "Last Salute to the Commodore" with Dennis Dugan as "Mac" but it just didn't have the chemistry between the columbo/wilson combination.

The actor playing Colombo’s assistant did a great job as a dunce.

You gotta love how most of the suspects are perturbed and upset with Columbo when he's investigating a case. I would be crapping my pants.

Ray Milland a phenomenal Actor is Starring in this Columbo Episode. What a fabulous Actor and always so well spoken ! I just love Ray Milland. His portrays are Priceless 🌺🧡🌟⭐️🌟⭐️🌟

Ray Milland stars in this episode. He also starred in Dial M for Murder. A classic movie with Grace Kelly. If you haven't seen I highly recommend.

Two of my all-time favorite Columbo moments in this scene. First, at 1:08: COLUMBO: Sergeant, has this lady actually been arrested? WILSON: Well, I uh, sir, I phoned my report into Captain Richey, he was quite complimentary. She'll be charged as soon as we .... COLUMBO: No, Sergeant, no. Second, Ray Milland's glare at Sgt. Wilson when he's about to read the Miranda rights, at 4:06. Classic!

Surprising that Mrs Goodland doesn't recognize Jarvis' voice when he makes the fake phone call. His voice is very distinctive.

Ray Milland appeared in season one which had Robert Culp. This one featured Bradford Dillman as his nephew who was murdered by his uncle.

Columbo gets the psychopath Dr. Janice Lester off the hook, after all she did to poor Captain James T. Kirk in the final dreadful episode of "Star Trek" TOS!

Interesting episode with Ray Milland and possibly some implicit analogy especially at the end with Dial M for murder, the bullets and the keys and with the Mrs ....

Ray Milland was also in another episode of Colombo - NOT wearing a toupee!

The murderer thinks he is so clever compared to Columbo yet he left a bullet buried from a previous break-in where he shot at an intruder in the past and said he only hit dirt in his report to the police at the time. That is what prompted Columbo to procure a metal detector and search the soil in the greenhouse for it on the off chance the murderer forgot to dig it up and get rid of it.

My all time favorite telivision show

Milland one of 2 Welsh actors to play a murderer in Columbo- the other Matthew Rhys. I recommend him in The Lost Weekend (Oscar), Easy Living, Ministry of Fear and Dial M for Murder, among others. For the Lost Weekend, he received the first of 6 Oscars won by Welsh actors and actresses- Anthony Hopkins leading the way with 2 (Richard Burton had 7 nominations, 0 wins). Milland was from Neath, a few miles from where Hopkins, Milland and also Michael Sheen were born.

I love Columbo, but I noticed a strange detail here. How can a third bullet acquired just a little while ago (as in right then and there) be proven by ballistics?

So Columbo digs up the bullet and in 2 minutes he sends it to the lab, gets tested and gets it back. Now that's police work.

Murderers are despicable enough. But the worst kind are the ones that try to frame someone else for their crime!! It's most cathartic to see them first tortured, then arrested by Columbo!

THOSE "GAPING HOLES" I often read comments about the so-called "gaping holes" in the plot lines of Columbo episodes. With respect to these leagle-eyed critics, this is my response: I care not about these multiple and "gaping plot holes", cited with such regularity. I care not, not one single iota. As relevant as these loose ends may be, the truth of the matter is that they are a distraction from the pure aesthetic quality of the work. Fine art, in all its dimensions, requires moments of SUSPENDED DISBELIEF in order to be truly appreciated. And "Columbo", in all its glory, represents supeme fine art in the genre of television detective fiction. For me it's the sheer delight, among other elements, of watching Columbo in action: his peerless genius, his eccentric and idiosyncratic mannersms (more often than not a clever ruse in the art of distraction), his subtle sense of humour, his unmistakable humility and modesty (delicately balanced with his razor-sharp acumen and powers of observation), his calculated cat-and-mouse routine before delivering the kiler blow and so much more, infinitely ...

If Columbo's wife ever killed him, who'd have solved the case???

...But the wife could have used the man's 32 caliber gun , to kill her husband, he could have said: The gun belong to me, but anyone could have taken it to commit murder. that way he would have got away with it. In another clip, he admits that he owes a 38 gun, and that he hadn't seen it for a year, and is somewhere in the house.

It’s kinda nostalgic to look back and see how people were arrested and treated compared to now. THEN: The perp knew the jig was up and finally fessed up, swallowing his pride and walks ahead of the arresting officer to the squad car. NOW: Police officers won’t even tell you your arrested until 3-5 officers have you spread eagle on the floor eating dirt with your hands cuffed behind your back. I like it better THEN

Columbo has always been my favorite. It’s too bad when it started in the 50’s like this one it was less than 10 minutes long for the whole show. They leave out a lot of details. Later they were as long as half an hour which was a great improvement. The TV had just been invented in the 50’s so the TV sets were a lot smaller so they couldn’t handle longer shows

I have to say this is one of the worst episodes of Columbo. The Ray Milland character is way over the top and Ray (Mr Goodland) along with the wife and even the person who gets murdered, I can care less about.
