Well I'd like to nice up the interior and put a set of radials on it without losing the wide white look. That's kind of pricy. And I need to pull out the tranny and put a synchronizer in the 2nd gear slot, then convert it to 12 volt. I've got a new driver's side glass for it already. After that I'll be ready to drive it to the other coast.. hahaha.

hell yes, nothing like the sound of a old y-block ford v-8, even the lifter noise from their oiling problem that was remedied somewhat with a kit installed to provide oil to the lifters. even so, they were many installations that looked like a drunk monkey put them on with a big pipe wrench and a fifth of moonshine in the gut.

There's a lever under the hood that exists so if you lock the car in neural, you can fiddle with the linkage to get the shifter 'unstuck'.

My first car was a 1976 Ford Granada with a 3 on the tree with and in-line 6, the other kids in high school always thought it was an auto until they rode in it. Also had manual steering, manual disk brakes, manual clutch with a extra spring on it, high speed rear end, and I could get 34 mpg at 70. Once or twice I bound up the shifting linkages going from first to second too fast. It finally died with over 500,000 verified miles, granddad had bought it new in 1976 for $3400.00.

What an odd name for a car that was. Back in the day I didn't think much of 'em, but lookin' back I can see they were a lot cooler than I thought at the time. I feel that way about a lot of cars from the past. Them old art deco Mopars were some ugly in the day. Now they're beautiful to behold.. hahah.

I learned to dive a 3 (and even a 4) speed transmission on the column not long after I learned how to drive. Back in the 80's, I inherited my great uncle's chevy truck and it had a 3 speed on the column. I noticed that second gear seemed to have a lot of power and then I remembered that my uncle never used it. He would start out in first gear and as soon as he got rolling, he would automatically go to third (bucking along the way). I never recalled him ever using 2nd. gear.

@@rpeek Leave it to Ford to reinvent the wheel. My bike is 6 volt electrical system also. I changed all of my light bulbs - headlight, tail light /stop light ,blinkers and speedometer instrument cluster bulbs to LEDs. That helps the bike out a lot because the electrical system is old and weak. And the LEDs are so much brighter. Take care and have a great day sir.

Dual exhaust from the factory. I had new pipes made for it from the mufflers back. Factory re-makes... I love the sound of a dual exhaust Y-Block.

That's a wagon. I had one . It should be the 272 y block and factory dial exhausts. Nothing sounds like a y block. Dad still has a f100 w a 292

As a young fella I had a 59 Ford Wagon with that same overdrive unit and a slightly bigger Y-block engine (292 vs 272) I had no trouble reaching over 100 mph in her cruising to LA and back, she was a glorious machine. I have no doubt Rich's 55 would reach 100 too if she was tuned right and he was of a mind to do so!

It is a Y-block. The 3 speed overdrives were common in the 50's and this tranny could be found in Fords, Chevys, Studebakers and all kind of cars. It's basically a Borge Warner 3 speed with the overdrive built into the rear of it, electrically operated with a selanoid.. Here's more info.. vwww.fordification.com/tech/overdrive.htm

Hi, I see you have a toggle switch for the overdrive, and you took off in first. So you must have the governor connected. Is that right? I’m asking because I’m putting an overdrive unit in my old Chevy. Thanks.
@rpeek
@rpeek 4 жыл бұрын
I've never quite figured what the toggle switch does but I think it cuts the power to the solenoid locking it out from shifting.. The pull switch also unlocks the solenoid but I'm suspecting it maybe does it only in low gear? I'm not sure. Yes, this is connected to the throttle assembly. It's quite a complicated set of throttle rods and such. I'd study some pictures of the old cars if you can find 'em. I'd considered swapping this one over to a multiple carb setup, but knew I'd have to re configure that throttle setup and decided to pass on doing that.

@@aftershock2222 I no longer have the car but it was connected. It didn't work when I first got it but it had a fuse on the firewall and when I replaced that it started working.

The Borg Warner Overdrive Transmission began its life in the 1930s and was last used anywhere in the automotive industry in Ford trucks in 1972. Overdrive was last used in Ford passenger cars in 1967.

Here because I discovered column shift exists a few minutes ago. Is this also called half gear or up gear?
@rpeek

Well, this particular transmission is an "overdrive" and it has a high and a low for each of the 3 gears, meaning in effect it's a 6 speed, made in 1955..
