Sweeet video!! I was just up in anchorage with my brother for 1 night and we got our first King Salmon. Sadly now back in Minnesota, but we want to head back up in a couple weeks for the Silver Salmon run. Hopefully I'll be able to learn a bit more about them and when the best time to return is! You gained a new subscriber!!

Wow! Great job catching the King! We've not tried to fish specifically for King Salmon yet, but one day we'd like to. From my limited knowledge I think the Pinks and Sockeye will be running next for us on the Peninsula, I think Silvers are a touch later, maybe August and September? We're still learning too. I would definitely figure out where you want to fish and reach out to a guide for advise. Feel free to message us with any other questions and we can try and run down any answers for you. Thanks so much for your support!

I got skunked at Centennial Park in Soldatna. Kenai was way too high. End of the month they will be coming in hard. They are starting to trickle in.

Sorry to hear! We usually fish the Kenai a touch further up river, but you're right the water has been really high this year. We haven't caught anything on the Kenai yet this year. We finally had some luck on the Kasilof over the 4th of July weekend (video to come). We may try there again now that the numbers are looking better. Fingers crossed for the end of the month! Good luck!

I'm not trying to bash you at all, but I have a serious question. Why not use spinning reels when you have that much weight on there? I'm a Michigan native and fish for them around here, but I'd love to visit there and try it out.

@Jdominique70 that's a great question. We use fly rods and reels due to the style of of fishing. We're flipping and sweeping those rods through the water every 5-10 seconds, often for hours. The lighter rods and reels make a difference over the course of the day and even the entire summer in saving our shoulders and wrists. There are certainly plenty of people who use heavier rods and spinning reels b/c that's what they have. We put our trust in the local shops who advised us on what equipment to use and having tried the heavier set up, we're very glad we went with the lighter gear. We hope that answers your question! If you ever get a chance you should totally come up here to fish. It's amazing! Meanwhile enjoy your fishing in Michigan!

As you were passing the bear, and yelling hey Bear, I'm wondering if that bear actually spoke English, You know, since is was along the Russian river and all? It may have been a Russian speaking bear. it did look kind of confused.

This is a question that has haunted philosophers since the beginning…but we don’t speak bear, or Russian, so we do the best with what we have.

This is not fishing the Russian River. This is fishing the Russian River sockeye run on the Kenai River just downstream from the mouth of the Russian. Fishing the Russian is a lot more fun as it’s so small and clear you can see the salmon swimming upstream towards you.

Yep! You’re right. Someone else commented on this as well and we’ve adjust the title. Thanks for the feedback!

You were actually fishing the Kenai river. Fishing spot makes all the difference in the world.

Yes, we were at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai. Everyone we know (which isn’t a lot of people) refer to it as fishing the Russian, but your point is well taken. Thanks!
