Defending against a Russian assault on the Studienka map. It gets messy. Also, surprisingly anticlimactic.
Mods wise, its the usual Black Sea mix of Kieme's mods for the textures, Waclaw's HQS Sound Mod and Veins effects.
Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea).
You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront... and especially the forums.
Conceived and written before the real conflict began in 2014, Combat Mission: Black Sea is a military simulation depicting a fictional 2017 conflict between NATO and Russia in Ukraine. Command American, Ukrainian, or Russian ground forces in the increasingly sophisticated and deadly environment that is modern combined arms warfare.

Hap, nice way to present this scenario. In the scenario realism department, the lack of heavy armor or fire support can easily be explained away by various constraints: this was a secondary or diversionary effort, for instance. However, the large commitment of troops (by both sides) into such a small area, and especially for the attacker such unfavorable terrain, is harder to rationalize. Two platoons with support should have been the maximum for each side.

Yeah, I keep switching between WW2 and Modern with Combat Mission, which really isn't helping me get the force-space ratios right.

The discussion about whether CMBS is a tactical game is interesting; for me It comes down to scenario size. The small infantry-biased scenarios are great. Combined arms often turn into a slugfest with high vehicle casualties. It's very hard to bring the combat power of APCs to bear in CMBS without them getting tagged, even the humble RPG is accurate enough at a distance to make strongpoint assaults a nightmare. UKR quite often have green infantry too, who break if they hear a soud noise (there's a hilarious post at BF forums about a BTR crew being rattled because their vehicle got bogged). Maneuver warfare is hard to pull off when weapons have such accurate coverage and range, any map with defense in depth becomes extremely tough to get an attack started on. The UKR campaign 'Shield of Kiev' has examples of both 'Attack on Zalissya' and 'Parks and Retaliation' are hell followed by heaven. The latter will feel very familiar to anyone used to CM2 WW2 stuff.

As a CMBS PBEM player (mostly as redfor) I can't agree that the CMBS is not a tactical game. I can't understand how those ppl say such comment, and wonder if those ppl ever played CMBS for once. There are too much things to consider to win this game (especially if someone plays redfor). Location of possible front line and kill zone, main approaching route and plan B, plan C, high and low terrain, weather, day/night, and wind .... This game needs huge amount of tactical sense, thinking and predicting. Playing US is bit easier than Russia, since US has easier learning curve than playing redfor. But eventually, it will not that much easy game for US army as well. Modern technology, such as thermal vision and UAV, will take out a bit of chances for flanking or ambush, but they are not ultimate game ender or cheating tools. And still, a lot of players successfully flanks and kick opponent's ass regardless of those modern tech toys. It just depends on how to use and counter those high tech toys, terrain, and play style. Some maps are not balanced, but most of the maps has numerous rooms for proper maneuvering, specially if it is meeting engagement (and that is why I more prefer meeting engagement). Attack defense game is bit limited in that sense. And current mine mechanism in this game is broken. Mines are clearly OP now, and I wish Battlefront bring something, such as tanks with mine plow, in next CMBS module. Anyway, I think this really depends on how to play this game. If someone think of Warthunder or Wargame Red Dragon while playing CMBS, that will be a huge mistake. It will be ass-kicking game, and the person will say "CMBS is biased, totally non balaced" or "CMBS is not tactical at all". I'm tired of those claims. I agree that CMBS is not a noob-friendly or easy game, but this game needs some level of tactical thinking and approach.

Great video as always! I think that you might have been using too many points for such a small map (looks like micromanagement nightmare to me!! lol). With a smaller number of troops in relation to the size of the map, even Black Sea is highly tactical. There is more room for manoeuvre, the whole reconnaissance/information(sharing!)-aspect kicks in, you have to make very hard decisions where to defend and how to react to enemy movements because you can't defend all approaches to the objective to the same extent, and setting up reserves and (APCs with) extra ammo becomes very important. Setting up fair games can still be very tricky though. You really have to pick the proper map size, game mode (probe, attack, assault) and time limit. Also, as a defender, I think that proper usage of field fortifications is often an essential aspect.

Kaunitz, I completely agree with you. It is highly unlikely that even without heavy armor either side would have committed so many troops to such a small area of operations, unless it was a heavily built-up urban battlefield.

Just because I stumbled across it, here is a very rough guideline regarding (infantry) frontages: formation / attack frontage / defend frontage squad / 50-100m / 200m platoon / 100-150m / 200-500m company / 500-1.000m / 1-2km battalion / 1-3km / 3-6km For setting up h2h battles, I guess it makes sense to take control of a formation that fits to the map's frontage. I'm not a military expert, it's just what I've read in James F. Dunnigan, How to make war. A comprehensive guide to modern warfare in the twenty-first centruy (4th edition, 2003), pp.18-19.

Tactics is what do I eat now. Strategy is what do I eat tomorrow. CMBS is a tactical game as you in MP only play singel battles and you dont need to preserve forces or you cant withdraw or so on as it has no effect. maybe if you do a MP campaign with other players and only play on super huge maps with company sized+ elements you can bring in strategy.
@usuallyhapless9481
@usuallyhapless9481 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, some kind of campaign or operational layer to bind all the battles together would be fantastic. The main problem is the length of the actual games themselves: an hour long game played at a rate of 1 turn a day takes two months to complete. It might be faster, depending on who you're playing against, but it also might be slower. Either way, you're probably looking at a campaign that takes at least a year to polish off...

what was the ratio defender - attacker? Seems to me that the attacker did quite a big stumble by trying to attack along the whole line instead of overrunning your defences on the bottom while making sure you cant flank them from the high ground.
@usuallyhapless9481
@usuallyhapless9481 7 жыл бұрын
I think in these circumstances the attackers +80% forces compared to the defender. My two pence is that AjarmanG had enough forces to attack across the line and when he did he found a weak area on the plateau- which he exploited- and found a strong area down in the village- which he tried to unhinge with supporting fire from the plateau. That seems like common sense to me- its pretty much what I would have done.
@castor3020
@castor3020 7 жыл бұрын
Surveying your enemy's line seems like a sensible idea yet he still overcommitted into it on the top and middle sections in my opinion In my eyes that plateau was a killzone into which the whole town could launch their RPGs, it looked like he paid a high price for moving into it with negligible gains, mainly you could not move troops efficiently in the bottom sector anymore (which you didn't do anyways), his Base of fire there did little else. Had the town been less dense, or the plateau been further away with more cover I most likely would have made the same move but in that case it seemed like a waste of resources. EDIT: I have to comment that this is all in hindsight of course, had I been the attacker I would have lost a man or two on that plateau as well. As for the heavier push on the bottom; gaining an even larger manpower and firepower superiority should win the battle fairly easy, IF you would have stayed passive, otherwise a similar grindfest would have resulted. I have to note that I have never played CM in any form. Yet I have been IRL in this kind of combat exercises with the same kind of terrain and force composition (roughly).

@usuallyhapless9481
@usuallyhapless9481 7 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. I'd need to test it out, but the electronic warfare is only going to affect communications, I think. So something like an Abrams, for example, would be able to spot and shoot (and kill everything) just fine that it would normally; it just wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone unless it closed to hand signal/shouting range.

Hmm. Don't know games mechanics at all well enough to come up with a balanced scenario. However a US mechanized force trying to clear an urbanized area of Russian rebel forces. Russian military has provided support in form of total comms lock-down... Did read FGM thread. Regarding scale used to play an old board game called MBT. Biggest Nato force (US or West German) was about company size, whereas the Soviets could field a Battalion. Map size was roughly 9 km square. Weapon accuracy was not up to CMBS levels though pretty much anything could hit anything else on map regardless of range. Just like CMBS though everything was basically a glass cannon. Except of-course the the M1A2.
