Combat Mission Cold War: Rumpenheim Rumpus - Soviet Amphibious Assault

Watch me try to move an entire Soviet Motorrifle batallion across the river Main, in order to capture the town of Rumpenheim, defended by the US Army under command of @Megalon Jones Slattery . This scenario is part of the Combat Mission Cold War base game and is set in 1981; five days after the cold war went hot.
Megalon Jones and I played this as a mirrored match, meaning that we also had a game going of this same scenario where the roles were reversed. This video is part 1 of what will be a 2 part video AAR; in my next video we'll look at Megalon's assault and the rather desperate defense by the US Army under my command.

These things keep getting better. My game play....less so. I really appreciate you testing out my plan and seeing what the odds of success were. 1 out of 5? I like those odds!

1 out of 4, even 😁. Which is pretty much on par with the average chance of victory the US Army has in this scenario, I think, so nothing was lost 😅.

Wow, what a video! By far the most cinematic CM video I've seen *and* it stills keeps the strategic level relevant and easy to follow, a combination I honestly didn't think was possible before I watch this video. Again and again you produce videos that contend for "Best Combat Mission video of all time", showing that the earlier ones weren't flukes or one time things, and that is impressive way beyond what I can convey here, so I'll leave it at that. After you give yourself a pat on the back do share and advertise this anywhere you can, this is the kind of videos that can make people "blow up" and go "viral" if they're willing to really put it out there anywhere they can, and you will inevitably make it if you keep this up! Again, thanks for the great content, do keep it up!

Excellent! Thank you for first selecting a scenario developed in depth (map and force selection, particularly the artillery - although it would be interesting to see a scenario variant with a little more substantial American opfor, say, a reinforced mechanized infantry company with a tank company (+/-) on reinforcement) by an expert on the period, and second, not only taking the time to research Soviet assault river crossing doctrine, but taking pains to represent the doctrine in scenario game play. Very informative, and well done.

Great video and editing. Right up there with some of the best I have watched for combat mission games. I really liked how you captured some of the scenes from above and it really felt cinematic overall. I really hope you keep making more like this. This battle looks quite big and I noticed you had shaders and shadows on. Is that just for recording or do you play with them enabled? The game for me just doesn't handle them well and can get low mouse response and flickering shadows along with a noticeable drop in fps. Thanks.
@FreeWhisky
@FreeWhisky 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, glad you liked it, and I'm certainly still 'in business', next one is coming along well! I usually don't really notice shaders/shadows while playing so I'm not even sure if I always have them on... The shaders don't make a very big difference, imho. But yes, when I record I tend to check if I've turned them on. Responsiveness was definetly an issue in this video, as huge amounts of smoke just choked up my CPU... So I had to make very careful camera movements as otherwise the framerate drop would be noticable...

@@FreeWhiskyThe Americans actually have to use combined arms more than the Soviets do because a mechanized infantry company has to use the absolute perfect placement of dragon teams and law infantry and it's m13s have to be as scared as fugitives taking pot shots and then duck behind undercover because they can't stand up to their counterparts. But truth is that's the awesome part of this game's years of 79 to 82. Most of the simulations of the Cold war have it right in the mid to late 1980s where the Americans have. All the top equipment that can outshoot their competition. I like how combat mission Cold war makes you have to fight for your life against the qualitatively and quantitatively superior soviets

Great video, but should the attacker be allowed a TRP ? As the Soviets are attacking into US territory, would the Soviets have the ability to accurately target something they have no direct line of sight on, as in a TRP ?

Well, yes and no. The way I see it, a TRP is two things in Combat Mission. It's just that, a TRP, which is a markpoint that you know your distance and direction to. To set up a TRP you would indeed need line of sight. But in Combat Mission it's also a pre-planned fire mission of sorts, which is a different thing. Which you can very well plan in advance with just a map. In real life, the guns could be able to fire without first going through the adjust fire procedure as they do on a TRP in Combat Mission, if they succesfully went through that procedure on another nearby target. Let's say that Combat Mission has, understandably, abstracted some concepts and procedures 😉.

Would you be able to find and link the Soviet battle plan docs you found? They looked like good English explanations. Sorry I know this is nearly a year old.

What document is that which you're referencing for the Soviet river crossing information?

I believe it was FM2-1, Soviet tactics and operations. Field manual on Soviet doctrine of the US Army.

@@FreeWhisky Ah! Makes sense. Yeah those DIA reports are useful, but also pretty imperfect. That said, you did a great job here demonstrating the kind of disciplined initiative which the Soviets emphasized. Was your Bn functioning as a forward detachment for its parent regiment? Are you familiar with the 1990 edition FM 100-2-1? It's much improved in quality.

Just curious, is it Rum*P*enheim with an F sound or Rum*P*enheim with a P sound?

Good question. I watched a travel video about Rumpenheim to find out (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fp1dqt2l1rSpqIE.html) and think it's Rum*P*F*enheim. I tried to copy it the best I could but I'm not German so watch that travel video to be sure 😁
