Combat Mission Red Thunder focuses on the hard fought Eastern Front battles of Bagration and Poland, from the swamps of Belarus to the gates of Warsaw during the summer of 1944. Experience the most balanced period of tactical warfare on the Eastern Front, even as the Axis' strategic ability to wage war began to collapse. Play out historical battles and campaigns or create your own customized Quick Battles.
CMRT Fire and Rubble is an add-on Module for Combat Mission Red Thunder that covers the final months of the titanic struggle on the Eastern front. The module spans geography from the Baltic coast to the very center of Berlin. Fight through all seasons from September 1944 to May of 1945. Battles from small infantry actions to the last of the sweeping tank battles in Europe are represented in both scenarios and campaigns.
Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea).

There is a argument that these are the best ambush/tank killers in game. I say this because hiding some in a bush or somewhere and waiting for a tank to roll by, one of the 4 to 6 pazerfaust hits, knocks it out. Maybe they get some infantry kills maybe not. But they are super cheap. Having a ton of these squads dotted around acting as killer bees, striking hard then dying, is better than a few well place AT assets that will inevitably get arty as they kill 1 or 2 tanks. They are just so cheap. I just really think having a company of volks along with a regular formation allows for some strategies that wouldn’t else be possible. Using the Volks as single isolated living mine fields out in front of your main defense. I say these in Lu of the other option of a supported combined arms defense because they simple don’t have the staying power nor the ammo to that. A interesting unit for sure.

Volksturm versus Partisans is an interesting match up. Amateurs clubbing each other with mediocre skill...each such battle is a glorious blood bath

greatest and most elite unit in the Wehrmacht in Combat mission set in WW2. one squad of the Volkssturm can turn back 10-1 odds with no struggle, powered by the words of the fatherland they will crush all allied forces. (Warning results may vary, we make no guarantees that these troops are actually elite)

I'm glad that these forces are included in CM even if they're not all that useful, it's nice to at least see them represented in WW2 media and at least allow the chance for people who find them interesting for whatever reason to put them in different matches. I personally find the Volkssturm a fascinating force from a historical perspective because of how much it says about German society in 1945. I see them especially as the final manifestation of the evil of the Nazi regime: the leaders of the Reich were willing to put a rifle into the hands of a child and throw them at a brigade of IS-2s if it meant that child could buy just a few more seconds before they themselves would lose their grasp on power. Germany in 1945 was a look into a certain aspect of human psychology unique in human history, one that (hopefully) we will never get a chance to see on full display again. To me it's what makes 1945 the most morbidly fascinating year of the war.

I don't mean to be hostile, but you're talking nonsense :D. Look at the home guard for example, elderly, cripples and children armed with SPEARS, yes spears because there wasn't enough rifles. Is this evidence of how Churchill and co were evil dictators willing to sacrifice the lives of children for a few seconds of extra power? (If you're curious, the idea behind the spears was that german paratroops and amphibious landing troops wouldn't be combat effective immediately after hitting the ground and so home guard positioned where they were landing would be able to run up, stick them with the spear, and then steal their weapons and fight on.)

@@jimmehjiimmeehh9748 I'm not sure its fair to equate the Volkssturm with the British Home Guard. The Home Guard was never intended to engage in any serious combat outside of, as you mentioned, capturing parachutists and downed Luftwaffe pilots or manning anti-aircraft/emergency response positions. Also the Home Guard was a completely volunteer force unlike the Volkssturm which is one of the most archetypical forced conscript units. No children were ever allowed into the Home Guard and no "spears" were ever issued - Churchill famously said, "every man must have a weapon of some sort, be it only a mace or a pike," but no pikes were ever issued since the Sten Gun became widely available only a short while after the pike idea was proposed.

@@jimmehjiimmeehh9748 Unbelievable. These two groups are not even remotely comparable. 1. The Home Guard was a volunteer force, not a conscription force like the Volkssturm. 2. A large amount of pressure to create the Home Guard came from the British population itself, who wanted it. This was not the case with the Volkssturm. 3. An amphibious assault from the Germans onto the British Isles would almost certainly have failed, meaning that the Home Guard had a very high chance of success. This is in exact opposite to the Volkssturm, who were being thrown to the wolves at a point in the war where everyone but the most delusional Nazis knew that the war was lost for Germany. 4. The Home Guard was created at least in part as a morale-building tool to make the civilian population feel safer, as opposed to the Volkssturm which was primarily a genuine combat outfit. The idea that these two groups are somehow morally comparable is beyond absurd.

The Home Guard was created when Britain still had a fighting chance against the Axis (as is obvious by the fact that they were on the winning side and were never directly invaded). The Volkssturm was created *after* it became clear that Germany was never going to win the war. That is such a massive distinction that it bears repeating.

The way to get the most out of the Volksturm company in a QB is to delete it and replace it with a forward observer and as much artillery as you can get. Change my mind.

I dont know if someone already mentioned this but the "volks sturmgewehr" is actually called the "volksturm gewehr" it was not fully automatic but semi automatic. Many people games and movies make that mistake

They (the Volk.) have some other interesting units. I see there is a Volk. 37mm Pak team. Unfortunately took much crew for it to load on a Kubelwagon.

A great piece of work, UH, as always. A good mix of historical content and how they actually play in CM. These guys may be poor at best, but are a great barometer for the state that the Third Reich was in. I often wonder how our own Home Guard would have faired if Germany had got across The Channel.....probably about the same. Brave men and boys, one and all, but very much last ditch and unable to change the inevitable outcome. Thanks for a great vid, UH

9:17 is there anyway to stop squads with multiple one-use launchers from dumping everything into one vehicle? This clip perfectly shows why that’s a problem

Not really. You can split squads down to teams and control expose that way, but how many weapons each individual unit fires is up to the TacAI. Which, to be fair, is probably going to die if the tank in front of it is not deleted ASAP

I would disagree but my syrian reserves platoon got shitfaced by 10 teens with AKs and no uniforms and the reserves took 29 minutes to call for air support and it didn't see enemies and flew off.

Great video, but look at 7:06 the MP507 animation. What a shame they didn't have the will to tweak the loading animation and fix the clipping hand when firing. It's a shame they add these flashy units but don't go the extra mile to integrate them well from an animation point of view. And this problem is present in other weapons too. The introduction of this force gives me some hope of seeing the AK in the future. Maybe trough a mod.

I have enjoyed this series very much. Thank you! I am extremely interested in playing combat mission series of games, just wondering is these games still worth getting if i only play against AI?

I only play against the AI and I think they are well worth it. Each game comes with multiple single player campaigns, along with scenarios designed to be played best against the AI only. They throw in some scenarios intended for multiplayer too, but there is more than enough single player content that you don't need to bother if you don't want. It can take me ages to finish just one campaign. Some of them are extremely long and difficult, and some scenario designers can make the AI put up quite a fight. There is also a quick battle system and scenario editor that is like a game in itself, where you can throw together maps and pick and choose different forces, make your own AI plans and watch them fight it out.

There are hundreds of hours worth of scenarios to play when you add in user made ones, so absolutely. The AI will never be as good or as dynamic as a human player of course but in actual user scripted missions it can still kick your ass, the quick battle AI is a bit dumber though, especially on offense.

Is it just because cold war getting all the attention being the latest? I read the the engine behind those games are the same so AI and graphics details etc should be the same, no?

@@albertc7103 Yeah that's probably everyone just playing Cold War and the new Red Thunder module right now, both released at almost the exact same time a few weeks ago. Every CM game uses the same engine and they are all actively kept up to date, with the only exception being CM Afghanistan. The only difference between games is the setting and the forces involved, so it's usually recommended to get the game with the setting and forces that interest you the most.

If you play in turn-based mode and save each turn, you can go back and watch the replay for each minute.

Get within about 4-5 action squares of a target and they'll throw grenades.

This is a great video, but I saw a minor (but infuriatingly common) mistake. You called the STG-44 an MP-44. In German, MP stands for Machininpistole, or an automatic weapon which fires pistol caliber. STG stands for Sturmgewehr, or "assault rifle", which is what the STG-44 was. TL;DR: STG-44 is correct, MP-44 is not.

@@Arth0715Unclear whether that was the actual reason, or just because they didn’t have a name for a new class of weapon. The East Germans eventually classified the AK as a machine pistol as well (MPi-K, MPi-KM) since the AK fulfilled the role of the SMG in Soviet doctrine
