Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more
Todd Opalski is a retired Marine (NCO and Officer), Scout Sniper, Force Recon Operator, Delta Operator, Special Operations Commander, and entrepreneur. After 26 years in the military, he lived the startup experience in Silicon Valley before standing up Camp Zen Commando, a Costa Rican retreat and oasis to help people of all stripes optimize their lives and be prepared for the uncertainties of tomorrow.
If you love the Marine Corps or The Citadel, you'll appreciate this episode. In fact, the Marine Corps might just play this on a loop for potential recruits because Todd makes it hard not to want to sign-up.
Todd shares lessons that can be applied to young and seasoned officers, new recruits enlisting today, and civilian leaders trying to break through. He has an infectious positivity that makes you envious of his outlook on life.
He truly was part of the elite Tier 1 units, successfully completed Marine Force Recon selection TWICE, loved Ranger School so much he said he would do it again, crossed the berm into Iraq, fought in Fallujah II, and then lived in the special ops community for years in the post-9/11 era.
Todd is a true professional, leader, and inspiration.

@@CombatStory My apologies for the delayed reply. I just started a new job and have been busy with that... Know the Intensity of my Uncle while growing up when he was around (when he wasn't wherever he was) I knew going into it that it was going to at its peak! Since this something he has been wanting to do for some time as concept, It was amazing to be able to not only see it but experience it myself. As I was just a "test" candidate for us normal population (haha) It was a necessary baseline for Todd to understand what the average/above average civilian can handle. As I has just gotten done being in Dutch Harbor, Alaska working on fishing boats, I had been in decent shape going into the program to begin with. But my greatest lesson I learned from it all was the mindset part of the program. Due to being at sea for weeks at a time with (not really anyone to talk to) the crew it was a wake up call that I've used everyday since leaving. Hope all is well, loving the content!

When he talks about his training while in Delta, about master at everything the basics. Exactly what a 19th special forces senior NCO told me. He said really special forces is just mastering the basics of being and infantryman. When I was singing up for that units pre selection in national guard. It's the basics. Being precise with everything. They really are no different than any other unit. Except the level of commitment they require. And there are dedicated people in all the other units who are masters at the basica and go o. From there.

Yes it's Mastery of the basics but you have to master the basics before you move on to the Advanced Training which the unit does far more compared to any other unit in the military, Mastery of the basics is not the only thing that separates the unit from other Special Operations units and or conventional military units, so please don't go saying that it's only the Mastery of the basic steps separates them it's far more than just that

Todd Oplalski is an interesting guy. And he's clearly smarter than he lets on, plus he's entertaining and outgoing as well. I'm amazed that the then 28-year old Todd, was given only two-years to graduate from The Citadel (normally a 4-year program). The maximum age to become an officer was, at the time, age 30. And Todd pulled it off! WOW!

Lol totally, that’s why most young marines are getting out and joining the army, their retention is shit, stop buying the propaganda. They’re underfunded, have major leadership issues, and can’t get missions bc Sncos are too busy worrying about century old Marine “standards” than adapting. Leadership loves screwing their own over, and over again. But by all means, join the core and experience it yourself.

45:15-45:50 - This was great. When I was in OSUT at Benning in 1987, I was a squad leader and one of my guys was a gangbanger from LA. It was the first time I had heard of South Central, Bloods/Crips, etc. He was 25 and I was 18, but like Todd said, all he was looking for was leadership. As an 18 year old, I had no fucking idea what I was doing. He started out as a hard case, but then got really squared away. The thing that has held in my mind about him was that he knew he was going to get killed doing what he was doing - gangbanging. He needed to make a change in his life. He made the conscious decision to make that change, and then he did it.
