Combat Story

Күн бұрын

Today we hear another Combat Story from Elliot Ackerman, a decorated Marine infantry officer, Special Operations operator, CIA Paramilitary Officer, Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient, and best-selling author.
As many will recall, Elliot was our first guest on Combat Story long before we ever did video interviews. That first interview remains one of my favorites and covers an incredible inside look at his role as a Platoon Leader in Fallujah II in 2004 (link to first interview: • Combat Story (Ep 1): E... ) and the true grit and determination it required. It was that battle that earned him the Silver Star.
In this second interview, we pick up where we left off from Round 1 as Elliot describes being one of the first members of Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) and his subsequent deployments with this unit.
We also dive into his national bestselling book, Places and Names: On War, Revolution, and Returning (www.amazon.com/dp/B07HDR55GN/..., where Elliot describes revisiting, both in mind and body, his combat experiences.
It’s a fantastic read and in the interview he shares moments from the book that include returning to the very buildings he occupied in Fallujah years earlier and another experience having an unthinkable meal with a former Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) leader as they shared their memories on the frontlines fighting against each other.
Elliot is a special Marine who survived five deployments and fought at the highest levels. I hope you enjoy this next set of combat stories with Elliot as much as I did.

This is absolutely one of the top military podcasts (up there with Jocko, Cleared Hot, Mike Drop, etc.). There are a lot of great ones out there, but this one really stands out as an exceptional purely military podcast. The host is very intelligent, articulate, and likable and he asks great questions. He also brings on great guests and I really appreciate the fact that he brings on people who aren’t on a ton of other podcasts. I cannot speak highly enough of this podcast.

@@LP3me I can't believe no one wanted to go. Shaking my head. I told my career planner I'd extend my enlistment if they sent me to Ranger School. Didn't happen so I got out at 4 years. @LP3me
@LP3me 3 жыл бұрын
@@ezabala wow, ya that’s one the best sniper schools there is, must have been a challenge. In our situation we had just got back from a year long deployment and had orders to go back in 11 months so I think that played a part as to why others weren’t so Eager to go, wanted some time home with family. I remember one time I got a 48hr pass to the green zone in Baghdad, and I was housed up with a marine infantry guy. We traded stories and his company had the AO right next to ours, had similar engagements, number of raids and patrols, we had pretty similar deployments. I think some marine and army infantry units are not that different. Although I will acknowledge that the baseline discipline for a marine is usually a higher standard than most army soldiers, but army infantry comes close. Depending on the unit and leadership.

Fantastic podcast, especially bc I come from the same community as Elliott and it's interesting hearing about some same events that we both lived through, but in slightly different locations on the ground. I got to 2nd MSOB in June 2007 after a year pump to Iraq with a MITT. I volunteered to pump out with 7th Group (SOTF 71) by myself for what ended up being a 5 month stint augmenting different AOBs & ODA's across the battle space in order to learn the ropes of how the CJSOTF was run since we were the new guys on the block. I have buddies that were with MSOC Hotel on the ground during that deployment out West...Eric, Nick, etc. Blast from the past, hadn't thought about that time in my life for a while until listening today. Right on man, Elliott has had an extroardinary career.

Really enjoy listening to Elliot speak but I have to raise a point about his comments regarding "heavy platitudes that make us feel good about ourselves". I understand his point, I do, and I myself couldn't care less if my body were left behind... I plan on being cremated as well, and I wouldn't want my buddies to die trying to retrieve my empty shell. That said, for many there's a comfort going into combat (pre-death consideration) knowing that regardless of what happens, your loved ones will see you again, alive, or dead, you won't be left in a heap in a foreign land. For some, that's enough.
