Bare knuckle punching is one of the oldest forms of training in the world. And yet, with the advent of gloves and wraps, people feel that bare handed striking is one of the most dangerous things you can do to yourself. In today's video, I teach you my technique for striking with your bare hands without shattering your tiny baby bones.

I can vertical fist punch with the top two knuckles and the radius. That's how i was taught in Isshinryu karate. I can break bricks like that with no tape or wrap, or gloves and without hurting myself. Yes, vertical fist is very hard to block. It slips right through your opponent's standing guard. the only problem with the elongated guard is your jab is either going to be weaker, or if you pull your jab back first it's going to be telegraphed.

I train all the variations bareknuckle - horizontal, vertical, diagonal. My emphasis is on the middle finger knuckle, rather than 1st 2 or last 3. Because in the chaos of a real fight, any part of your fist might connect at any time, including before you've fully extended the arm. And faces aren't flat.

This is the most condensed and concise video I've seen explaining this and how to develop these sorts of punches. The only issue I find with Classical vertical punches is that they are rough on my elbows when shadow Boxing for hours at a time. I've partially relieved this by leaning forward and sitting down slightly so that I'm technically punching up from the shoulder as Fitzsimmons shows in his book, but it's still an issue I haven't figured out. The largest benefits I've seen aside from hand and wrist safety is near zero elbow flare so that my punches are much harder to see and time, and they're far easier on my rotator cuffs and shoulders than when turning my fists over while connecting with full power. If there is a solution to the elbow pain and stiffness issue I would love for anyone to share!

I’m not sure if this will be of any use to you, but I found slight rotation of the fist on impact to be the best method. What I mean is: hold your right hand and arm in full extension out in front of your body with a vertical fist (I.e. in the position your arm would be in when you land a straight right with a vertical fist). Then, rotate your fist (in this case, your right fist) counter clockwise as far as it will go without moving your elbow or shoulder. If you punch this way, you can add some torque on impact without sacrificing the benefits of the vertical punch (less telegraphing, elbow down, etc.).

Actually testing has determined a hybrid vertical punch that is straight but wrist is slightly turned down for perfect alignment. Look at the alignment yourself. Best of both worlds. You can hit with top two knuckles with straight vertical punch.

When you do the second push-up-set, you are actually more into the "diagonal fist position" which is a third variant between "vertical" and "horizontal" and often favored in "Full Contact/Knockdown Karate" for (relatively powerful) straight bodyshots. It is very good in terms of wrist stability and you can still punch with the first two knuckles.
@CombatSelfDefense
@CombatSelfDefense 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I have people do the diagonal position because I’ve seen the internal rotation of a full horizontal fist push up cause the shoulder more harm than good.
@FredKuneDo
@FredKuneDo 2 жыл бұрын
@@CombatSelfDefense, yes doing pushups on a fully horizontal fist, is not really good for the shoulder, but brings also problems for the wrist. I mean, if you think about it, a really technical correct straight punch with the horizontal fist is in truth a "vertical punch with a twist at the very end".

@FredKuneDo
@FredKuneDo 2 жыл бұрын
@@CombatSelfDefense, the pushups variants you showed are good enough. They are fine for knuckle conditioning and getting a feeling for bone and joint alignment. The real technical punching training should be done on the heavy bag, partner drills with pads and maybe a "Makiwara" or pad mounted on a wall ( I don't mean these Wing Chun wall bags, the Wing Chun people are often putting weird stuff in the bags and use them for too weak punching, although punching a bit less powerfull is a good thing for bareknuckle) Another thing, wich is really important as a conditioning routine for bareknuckle punching is training the muscles in the forearms and hands, especially exercises for "grip strength" are pretty good (working on these muscles stabilizes fists and wrists). But it is like always in combat sports and martial arts training about "putting the pieces together in the most effective way".

I will always try to avoid bare knuckle. My skin tears too easily and infection after contact in an altercation could be nightmarish. In training I am sure it is beneficial. Alter your distance to target often. In an altercation you won't likely only make contact at a specified point of your punch or its rotation. Train to deliver force from all. Keep your wrists strong throughout to avoid injury.

Gotta ask a question. Whybdoes everyone talk about punching woth the knuckles instead of the fist?? If a fistbis made properly, it is tight and not "hollow" between the fingers. Basically it becomes a virtual hammer head at the end of your arm. Bruce lee taught this way of making a fist. And every martial artist on KZfaq claims that bruce lee was a good artist, albeit an actor. If you hit with ypur knuckles you break them. When hitting with full fist, shock.is asorbedcalong your entire forearm, and your opponant receive a nice bruise to show his buddies. Please clarify for me. Just curious about why it is always knuckles when my experience says i can hit ery hard and keep my knuckles intact.

Are pointy knuckles more dangerous in a street fight? It is said that it’s easier to cut someone or break someone’s bone with a pointy knuckle when all the force concentrates on a small surface, for example when someone has very pointy first knuckle which is the strongest knuckle, my ffriend broke his 2nd knuckle when he was young and now his first knuckle is very pointy and it is so easy for him to land one strong first knuckle (btw he genetically has pointy knuckles), great video man!
