Derm here 🙋🏻‍♀️, I just wanted to clarify that Hyaluronic acid DOES NOT pull water out of skin, even in dry environments. Our skin's humidity is ALWAYS higher than environmental humidity, even if environmental humidity were to reach 100%, so that's simply a myth about hyaluronic acid. It always pulls water from the air, if we are in a humid area it will pull more water, if we are in a drier area it will pull less water. The difference is that in dry areas the hyaluronic acid doesn't saturate, and it results in it being more irritating to the skin. What you said about the benefits of using it on damp skin is true, but it is because we are making sure that the hyaluronic acid becomes saturated quickly, so the plumping effect increases and the irritation of unsaturated molecules decrease. Also saturated HA holds onto the water molecules for longer than its unsaturated counterpart. I hope that helps!!

Thanks for the clarification! That makes a lot of sense. The reasoning is off, but the outcome is the same. It is handy to know because when I use hyaluronic acid and I don't prep my skin, or I use it as a last step (like in makeup) my skin becomes flaky and horribly dry, which is counterintuitive to what it is supposed to do.

What do we look for on packaging to know what is saturated or unsaturated HA? I use an HA serum but never considered looking too deeply at the ingredients or packaging.
@OrleidisLozada
@OrleidisLozada Ай бұрын
@@elizabethg1901 it's not like that. Let me clarify. HA can hold or bond to between 100 and 1000 times it's weight in water. What I meant with Saturated is when the HA molecule is full of water it took from the environment, so it's bonded to all the water it can. This makes the HA molecules bigger (imagine one balloon that's then filled with another thousand balloons) and that's what plumps the skin, and also allows the skin to use that water it's holding. Unsaturated HA is the same HA molecule, but that hasn't been able to find enough water to hold (so more like a deflated balloon) and that makes it more rough to the skin. So whether the HA is saturated or unsaturated depends on the environment around. That's why it's a good practice to dampen your skin first, to make sure the HA molecules will find enough water to bring into your skin. Now something you can look for when buying a hyaluronic acid serum is those that say they have several types (or sizes) of hyaluronic acid, because the different sizes mean they will penetrate to different depths in the skin, so the effects will be better and more noticeable. I hope that helped you!

KBeauty has been the only thing that has managed to work for me during dry Aussie winter. I’m 52 and my skin is potentially better than ever.

I live in the very dry, very cold (although it is sweltering today) Canadian Rockies. In the winter, I slug with petrolatum every other night. I know it's not an option for those prone to milia, but it works for me. If your hair is getting caught in your skincare at night, I suggest a sleeping cap. ❤

Yeah I hear some people swear by it! I sometimes sleep in a cap and it often falls off, but I also hate the grease on my sheets. Might be worth it if it does great things for your skin, but I get similar results from double moisturising

I suffer from dry skin year round, but I feel it the worst in winter. This past winter was so dry for my area, I invested in a humidifier as a desperate attempt to add moisture to the air. Sheet masks and a really nourishing night cream also really help.

Cosrx makes a wonderful hydrating face mist called comfort ceramide cream mist. I incorporate it into my routine during dry winter months. It really helps my dry, sensitive skin.

Evian mist spray and vichy 89 HA every morning before SPF and mist during the day in warmer months. The Caudalie beauty elixir spray is a favourite.

I use a few things from the Moisture Surge range (I have combo skin too but also sensitive) - they have a mist, a really nice milky essence, & I use that moisturiser too. I'm also a big fan of Medik8 & I've just bought their hyaluronic acid, but even before that my skin improved dramatically just with the clinique bits.

I use a different skin routine in winter according to how my skin is. Cream cleanser, spray toner, a gel like serum at night like matrixyl, a cream eye product like house of Joisin. Then a moisturiser. Sometimes an oil patted on top like evening primrose a couple of times a week. Im 52, have sensitive combo skin that is much dryer in winter. I also use a light mask once a week.

Such good tips! Is there anything you do for really dry scaly eyelids? Struggling with that this winter 😫

I can't help too much sorry! I sometimes get dry eyelids but it is due to an impaired barrier which leads to a painful dermatitis reaction. I use a prescription steroid cream to get rid of that. But I don't get generally dry eyelids

If you are using retinol but it is becoming a bit drying for your skin due to dehydration, bakuchiol can be a great alternative

Its so darn cold in Melbourne with such high humidity that the air is wet! Good weather for hydralauronic acid anyway. My skin is doing pretty well ....the worst thing for my skin is having the heater on so much though....its that or freeze!

Not necessarily true. Melbourne is actually quite dry in terms of humidity (besides when it’s raining). Mixed with heating, it can really dry out your skin

Female aging and hormones, female aging and hormones… that’s why! It begins much much earlier than we think. I’d recommend reading Perimenopause Power by Maisie Hill to get up to speed on what to expect from 35yrs onward. Amazing book.

If you wanna save a money you could try manyo bifida biome serum! Dupe (better in my opinion) for estee lauder night repair! ☺️ Also that hyaluronic serum is not innisfree, it’s isntree. Sorry I don’t mean to be annoying for correcting 💙😆

Oh thank you for the correction! Obviously my brain isn't switched on haha! I will pin a correction. I don't think we have Manyo in Aus, but luckily I buy these 100ml serums from the corporate store and they are much cheaper than even buying a 50ml bottle full priced
