It had been suggested many times that a fairly inexpensive & readily available remedy to my mite problem - pulverized dolomite lime - could help the slight infestation issue I've been having in my ANC bins. Today I give this approach a try & hope for the best...

Good call deciding on treating the second bin. You can always use past videos and pics for comparison if needed. It's scary trying something for the first time, but I've heard good outcomes using the lime and D.E. Looking forward to update.

Ive had a similar problem with my bin. so what i did was, take the top layer of the compost bin where the mites are residing and put it on a tray then ive placed the tray full of mites to dry out in the Sun. mites hate the heat and dryness to therefore i let if bake in the sun for a few hours, periodically checking where they would have hide and throwing those pieces compact with mites out. ive seen a drastic decrease in mites infestation in my bin afterwards.

Plastic covering kicked in my spring tail problem. I m now drying up bin and adding lime.Acidity and lack of oxygen is the problem I think. Thanks for great vids.

Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 this works!! I also have some mites. I only noticed the mites after I introduced some leaves from my yard. Prior to that I had only used cardboard and paper as my carbon source. I figured I brought the mites in with the leaves, anyone have any thoughts on that? Where do we think the mites originally came from?

I'm always using leaves from outside & I always have a varying array of creatures in my worm bins :) I too assume that those things are related to each other. Thanks for watching!

The worms will eat the garden lime , it's like grit for them. Won't hurt them. I got that info from Emily, the Crazy Worm Lady Channel and used it . Grind up Mosquito bits and add a little to your spray bottle and spritz the top of the bins lightly, everyday for the flying critters.

You need pure dolomite, garden lime will work but it will affect your worms to. So do you keep an eye on it.

What is the best/easiest way to test pH? I have two bins & a small condiment container w/lid that were started July 1, 2022. It’s my 1st bins. The small bin is one that had a couple cocoons, which have hatched! ☺️ One bin has 2lbs of worms from Meme’s Worms. The other is 1/2lb (I think the fellow actually gave me 1 to 1 1/2 lbs worms. They’re all red wigglers. I’m not exactly sure when to harvest, but I can say the bin that has Meme’s worms in it are going like gangbusters. It has an earthy smell with dark rich material with a few bits & pieces of cardboard, brown paper, napkins, though each week when I check it, all the food scraps are literally gone.

Based on your description of it, your material sounds like its very nice When it comes to testing for pH, I do not know. Hopefully someone who can speak to the topic knowledgeably will chime in.... Thanks for watching!

Orange oil, drives away fleas ants and roaches too (i think) What it would do to worms? idk. But its wonderous for fleas. As bad as the mites are here you would certainly be able to tell if it made a difference or not.

Lime does react with water. I would imagine the worms skin fluid might do the same. Whenever i use lime i get dried hands, pretty bad. Not sure how a keeper could ascertain if its stressing the colony though.

Do mites survive in the microwave? I tried 2 sessions of 3 minutes each in the idea of sterilizing the compost. Either I used a faulty oven or they survived. Can someone check this for me please? I have a passion for knowledge since I discovered Elain Ingham ... Thanks for the channel, I'm glad to follow you ...

I assumed that the heat/steam caused by the microwave would be what knocks out the insects. Thanks for watching!

This video goes back almost 2 years now. I'm not even sure where the stuff is. Perhaps somewhere out in the garage - and as I recall it is heavy. Perhaps I can track it down and check to see what the packaging says, or doesn't say. What precisely are you interested in seeing on the original bag? Thanks for watching!

@@A-V I’ve been having mite issues with an ENC bin that was started a few weeks ago. I’ve read neem oil treatments can help with mites and boost worm reproduction. I just started using it with my most recent feeding. Also, love the videos! It’s always fun watching the worms and you give a lot of insight of trouble shooting pest issues.

My recall on how it all played out is somewhat sketchy after all this time... but I think I finally decided to stop obsessing over the situation & I think I turned my attention to making sure I use much more bedding in all my systems. I think it was soon after that I noticed the mites beginning to return to more normal numbers. Something else I started using was Mosquito Dunks to control gnats & fruit flies in my worm bins... which might also be contributing to me seeing far fewer mites in my systems these days. Thanks for watching!
