Hello! Welcome to another episode of Restore This!
Today I am restoring an early 1900's copy of a Starrett combination square. This came in a box of tools I got from an estate sale. It was super rusty, missing it's bubble level and the blade didn't slide in the head.
I start off by taking this rusty hand tool apart and soaking it's parts in a citric acid bath. Next, the parts are wire brushed and cleaned up. The body is sandblasted and the anvil surfaces and other metal parts are polished. Next the polished anvil faces are masked off and the body is repainted gloss black. A new bubble level is installed and a new plug is made to hold it in place. The tool is reassembled and ready to go to work!
This was a fun project. Not a lot of pieces, but a lot of work on each piece!

That's a hell of a job you did there. My 10 year old modern Starrett square is very rusty, but still dead accurate. You have inspired me to give it a makeover :)

Nice job! I was especially impressed with the multiple uses of the sock!!! 😆

Hahaha yeah, I have a huge bin of socks for use as rags! I never just throw them out. I’m still compelled though to use each one until it’s a grimey black crust. :) Thank you for watching!

That had to be incredibly satisfying! I have a very similar tool, identical except for the manufacturer. Mine wasn't in quite so rough shape, a little crocus cloth on the blade is as far as I took it. but now you've got me thinking... 😉😂

Nice resto. I'm gonna try to clean up an old Stanley combination square that my dad bought in the 70's. It's not in terrible shape but there's enough rust that the ruler doesn't slide and the set screw doesn't work well. It really just needs de-rusting and some polishing. Sadly I don't have access to a sandblaster so I'll just have to apply old-fashioned elbow grease.

You don't necessarily need sandblaster. Use wire brush of different sorts instead.

There should be a spring under the screw that will keep the rule under tension during the time that adjustments are made.

Thank you for watching! For the ruler I used black paint and kinda globbed it on.I let it dry a little bit then wiped it gently. I stuck in the crevices and wiped off of the flat polished part.

I’m working on doing the same and wondering what type of blasting compound you used? Thanks for the great video!

The blasting media I’m using is the 80 grit glass bead from harbor freight. I’m sure there’s better stuff but that’s what I’ve been using since I got the blast cabinet

Very cool! Sadly I was never able to determine the manufacturer. Not fir lack of trying though. I spent hours looking through google image search results and was never able to find a perfect match. That’s cool that yours has the scratch awl still! Thank you for watching and best of luck on your project!

I have a couple of the same squares. Mine are Union brand. Purchased by Millers Falls in the late 50s or 60s and still marketed under the Union name until Millers Falls went out of business.

Can you please share what grits you used when polishing the ruler... if you remember?
@RestoreThis
@RestoreThis 3 жыл бұрын
I started out with 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 then finally 3000 grit. It was a lot of sanding but it was worth it!

@@RestoreThis - Wow - I'm afraid of using sandpaper and losing the fine etching of the lines and numbers. You seemed to do it with ease. I've seen people use brute force and just sand blast them clean with whatever type of material they use but I don't have that kind of equipment. May just have to experiment. Now I understand why there are so many squares missing the rulers. :)

Bardzo dobra robota. Ładnie wszystko wypolerowałeś i pomalowałeś. Mam pytanie, po prostu ciekawi mnie jedna rzecz, ty te rzeczy sobie zachowujesz czy sprzedajesz? Bo gdybyś zaczął sprzedawać to twoje hobby mogło by się stać źródłem Twoich dochodów, a to zwykle bywa bardzo trudne. A tu masz idealne warunki.
